  3. I was speaking with a friend Gordon Diver who graduated from VHS in 1945 or 1946 and he never encountered Shatner at VHS. He did come across Bill Shatner later probably in the late forties to early fifties while both were Shakespeare actors at the Mountain Playhouse in Montreal. Again later in New York City their paths crossed and at no time did Bill Shatner identify as coming from Verdun. Gord Diver was brought up in Verdun, went to VHS and later taught for a short period at Bannantyne Elementary School.   "No Virginia Bill Shatner didn't go to VHS" but there is a Santa Claus ... LOL

  4. At 'no time' did Bill Shatner ever say he was 'from' Verdun,...........but he does say he went to school there,....whether he ever Graduated, was never brought up either,.at least not while he was talking about the school,..He did admit to being several schoolyard fights, etc etc,.....so maybe he was thrown out of Westhill,.and had to go to VHS,.....but when & for how long ,seems noone knows,......but I think the Biography may be on again tomorw on Dec 6th (this I'm not postive, but I think I read that somewhwere) besides most people trying to make it in any busisness in those years would probably have not been so ready to align themselves with Verdun, the Point ,StHenri etc etc ,.......but once they've made it ,...they might consider it a 'Badge of Honour' Perhaps when we find the answer to this ,..we might find those 'laughing cows 'too.        hahahahahahah

  6. Les. I am sure that Mr. Diver was my teacher at Bannatyne School in grade 6. On the last day of school, I would bring him a beer, every year. Did you say, he was still around. Winston Allison

  8. Gord Diver is still around he and I got to know one another out here on the West Coast. I would think he's about  80yo he characterized himself as being a couple of years older than Bill Shatner. He graduated from VHS about 1945. He must have been your teacher. I'll ask him if remembers the beer! LOL   Our common bond of course was learning we were ex-Pat Verdunites..

  9. Arbutus. If you see him, ask him if he remembers a kid bringing him a beer on the last day of school. He was one of the good ones. AND if you do see him, tell him he had a positive hand in changing my life. I had given him a hard time. But he set me straight real quick. Winston Allison

  12. Well I've left it in the hands of the WilliamShatner official website (whatever that means).......hahahahaha Here's a copy of part of the email I left with them: I have a quick question for Bill Shatner,.What years did he go to Verdun High School ? I just saw an A&E Bio on him,.found it interesting ,and certainly it was interesting. I grew up in Verdun (we didn't go to the same school) but we were discussing on an MSN group the otherday,..what years he may have gone to school there,.a few people are suggesting that he only went to WestHill HS,....but on the TV bio,he was clearly standing in front of Verdun High School,.did he graduate from VHS,.or did he just attend there for a brief time? Any information ,would be appreciated,Thanks in advance.  Btw:  we are not 'trekkie's' and we all do 'have a Life (LOL) ,.......our MSN Group is for People from Verdun to reminisce about having grown up in Montreal suburb of Verdun               Thanks Again   (Les Victoria BC) ........................................................................................................................   So if they get back to me I will realy the info here:

  16. I wish I could get a copy of that Biography to see for myself. I don't get the "Biography" channel and at this time of year I seem to have meetings or events almost every evening anyway. I found pictures of Westhill High and there is not much chance that VHS could be mistaken for Westhill or vice-versa. It would sure be nice to put an end to this debate.

  17. I sent an email yesterday to this email addy, and they answered with "He attended West Hill High School."    Cheers.

  18. Found this.  Notice says "he attended Verdun high school"   William Shatner

His duty was to go where no man had gone before --- he was Captain James Tiberius Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and he is Canadian actor William Shatner. Although he his often viewed as an American television icon, Will Shatner in fact hails from Montreal, Quebec. Born on March 22, 1931, he attended Verdun high school and then moved on to McGill University where he studied commerce. In 1956 he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting.

  20. William Shatner Thu 7th Dec - 9:30AM He's been a poet, singer, director and producer, but 'The Shat' will always be Star Trek's Captain Kirk. Clinging on to fame (and his hair), he's made a comeback as a camp icon.   ______________________________________________________________ This is on the A&E site right now ,.so it seems that this particular show may be on tomorow ....... but also on the site is mention of a show that William Shatner & Leonard Nemoy ,both sit down and talk about their lives:This particular show is called "Mind Melds",.......maybe it's on this show,.because the show I saw the other day ,did have a part where they spoke with Leonard nemoy too ( but what Shatner BIO would not contain ,Nemoy's thoughts on Shatner anyway...... So the site does say they will air the Shatner Bio, Dec 7th (tomorow morning,..but is all this subject to local programming (I don't know) Here a direct link containing the above info, & more................ http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_story/885:1099/1/William_Shatner.htm   ...........Feel free to 'explore' this strange new information center,                           We'll Beam You All Back .......when your ready to let go hahahahahah  .................................................

So ..........................perhaps were in a parallel universe ,where no man has gone before..........                        Picture if You Will,....a place ,where nothing is as it seems, where your looking up one show ,only to find another, what is going on,where am I ,you ask:                                       (well maybe this guy is to blame)   ..........hahahaha     Stay in the Zone............................

  23. Les-F, I will check VHS yearbooks 1945-46 and 47 on my next visit to the SHGV. Guy

  24. I did not find anything on William Shatner in the 1945-45-47 VHS yearbooks today at the SHGV. It appears that he attended Westhill High School (WHS) wich may have been confused with VHS. I think we can lay this one to rest until someone finds more conclusive evidence. Guy

  25. I agree. If Les or I get any responses back from "the man" himself, we will revive the subject.

  26. Hey, everyone interested in whether Bill Shatner went to Verdun High or Not.
In the old days in the late 40'S & early 50'S, the kids who Graduated from
the area High Schools in Grade 11, would often go to Verdun High School to
do their Grade 12 or 13. It was the only Protestant School on the Island who
taught Grade 12 or 13. In those days there wasn't any Junior Colleges or
CEGEP'S. if you all recall, they only came in the early 60's.

I believe Edward Nurse was one of these guy's who came to Verdun High to do
his final High School Year, before going to Sir George Williams University.
I know because I knew Eddie Nurse from downtown & when I saw him at Verdun
High I was surprised..... By the way, I am not shown in any of the High
School Yearbooks, as I never wanted my picture taken & in those days if you
didn't attend the Photo Session, you weren't in the High School Book......

I hope that you look only for Grade 12 or 13 Year students, & you just may
find, not only Bill but many Protestants that came to our School & went on
to be famous or acheive, achieve great things for our Country, Culture, &
standard of life...... I trust that this may clear up this situation....

    As Les says....H.F. & R.V. Please have a safe & Merry Christmas & a Happy &
    Prosperous New Year...

Remember we are always listening & Watching this Great Site......Keep up the
good work... What a marvelous place this is......Junior Waterman.....

  27. Dear Norman:

Thanks for the great lead concerning the possible solution to the Shatner/VHS mystery. I hope you won't mind if I pick two little nits.....

CEGEPs started in the late 60s (1969, in fact).....I was in the first class at Dawson College when it opened....

and Shatner is Jewish rather than Protestant (although in the Monteal School Board system at the time, and maybe still today, anyone who wasn't Catholic was considered Protestant just like anyone who wasn't French was considered English as far as what public school they could attend. It made the PSBGM schools pretty diverse and interesting. At Woodland I had good friends from Hong Kong, Holland, Turkey, Poland, etc........

    Have a great Christmas all!

    Bryan

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey Bryan, You are so very correct on these points. I didn't mean to imply
that Mr. Shatner was a Prostestant, only that it was a Protestant School
that he might have attended. I'm so very sorry if I left the impression that
only Protestants went to Protestant Schools. Those of us who attended these
Schools, certainly knew that everyone wasn't Protestant.
In Quebec in those days the School Board that happened to take in all was
the P.S.B.of G.M. In LaSalle we tried to go to a Catholic School, but we
weren't permitted to go unless we became a Catholic.
The Colleges, were, as you rightly stated, opened in the late sixties, not
as I said in the early sixties. Leon Jacobs who was & is still one of my
best friends taught there in the late sixties until retiring just a little
    while ago.
Thank you for clearing these things up......Again Everyone here on V.C.,
Please have a Very Merry Christmas....... And live in the moment........

  29. Hey Norman,

No apologies necessary! I was just being anal retentive.....

Was Leon Jacobs a Math teacher at Dawson? If he was, I took either Precalculus or Calculus with him....although we didn't really finish the course due to teacher strikes......If that hadn't happened, I may have ended up a mathmetician....

    Just wondering....

    Merry Christmas to all!

  30. Wait....the old brain cells may have miss fired.....I think Leon Jacobs may have been my Sociology prof......

    Can you help me, Norman?
