Best burgers during my era were from a little greasy spoon on southside of
Verdun Ave., between Rielle & Gordon. Don't remember the name but I recall
the owner operator as either Italian or French Cdn. short & stocky & very
gruff but a good guy.

Don't remember that. The only time I went that way on willibrord was for
ReplyDeletemessages for my mom or dad. Like Faulkners fish and chips or the other fish
and chips on wellington. But can't ever remember walking that way and
especially with a priest. The only contact that I had with the priests was
when they wanted to start a youth organization or the St. Patrick's concert
or the sodality. But I used to play down there with the Davis twins, Annie
Dolan, Leo Lee, John Walsh, Jackie St. Amand, Muriel Walker, Ronnie Swan
etc.

Thanks for the info. I didn`t know she was divorced. We used to be good friends at school. I remember going to the funeral home and being so scared. I live in Calgary now and I went to a clinic once and the nurse`s name was Halpin. She gave me some phone numbers to try and track down Lynn but it never worked out. Was she ever surprised when I asked her if she was related to Charlie Halpin. I believe it was her grandfather or great grandfather. Thanks again , maybe she will read this and get in touch with me. I remember your name, but cannot remember your face. Like you I am 63 years old. I married Ralph Francis from Newmarch Street. We have two children, boy and a girl one is 43 years old and the other is 38 years old. We have six grandchildren.
A couple of years ago we went back to Verdun to see all our old haunts, it was fun. What a great place to grow up!

ReplyDeleteJust joined this group. My father and mother grew up in Verdun. His name is Gordon Caine and my mom's is Patricia Ewing. My dad is now 73.
ReplyDeleteMy parents are in a little older age bracket but both were born and raised on the Avenues in Verdun. Hilda Kilcup (now 79) and Ross Hyde (now 81). Ross had a brother Don (now deceased) and a sister Audrey (lives on the west coast). Hilda had 2 older brothers (Roland and Murray - both now deceased), an older sister Pearle (now deceased) and a younger sister Shirley (lives in upstate New York). Hilda & Ross married after the war and moved to Valiquette Avenue where they lived for about 30 years before moving to Crawford Park for another 20 years or so. My folks are both still alive and in relatively good health and living on the south shore -- it was a HUGE move for them to leave Verdun about 5 years ago! I'm sure they would like to hear from anyone who knew (still know) them. Send me some info about yourself and I will forward to them. ReplyDeleteHi I am in that age group - Went to St Willibrord HS in the 50's. Moved to St Eustache - now living in Peterborough, Ontario. I Lived on Gordon Avenue. I remember the skating rinks they used to have at the school - many times crawled homes as the legs were to tired to walk. Or the Paul store where we got 1 cents bag of potatoe chips. The girls I remember in school were Betty Swatton, Elizabeth Quinn, Phyllis Ottewell, Irene beaudoin. If anyone know where they are now. Bye for now

ReplyDeleteHeather. Being that our brother graduated in or around "72", he should attend the annual Verdun Xmas reunion held in Toronto, with this year's being on Dec. 3. He would certainly know a good number (usually around 125) attendees. I was also in the Life Boys (Kenny Jack...anyone remember him?), and we always had some pretty damn good floor hockey teams. I played in a band called the Alabaster Villa with a guy who lived on Egan...Garth Russell. Jimmy Oliver also played with us, along with John Adams and Scott Lang. That was a fun time. Or, so we are told. The Xmas reunion is a always a great time, and more women come out each year. Glen

Hi Winnie3ave, You buy the long ribs and have the butcher cut them down. Any store that sells the full rack of ribs will also be able to cut them down, just asik at the butcher dept. Dannyb

Hi Bob- I remember you when you even younger than that. Used to play on Gordon Avenue. Do you remember warren Ward that lived in the same block as you. The Legault family - there were 10 of them if I remember correctly. We all change when we get older hahahaha.

The names you mentioned seem to ring a bell, in particular Elizabeth Quinn.
If it is the same Liz Quinn I am thinking of, she is a cousin to a group of
my ( Quinn ) nieces. She had a brother Joe who was a Fireman in Verdun and
they lived on 5th Ave. Above the Grandparents home which was the first house
on 5th just below Bannantyne at the lane. Mr. Quinn the Grandfather was an
alderman in Verdun for several years. If this is the right Elizabeth, she
now lives in Brossard, Que., just over the Champlain Bridge. Her brother is
or was very active in the Montreal Irish Society and was or is very involved
in the St.Pat's Day Parade.
As for me I left St.W's in 1953, but I had a younger brother & sister who
would have graduated in about 1955 0r 56. ( Donald & Carole-Ann Sullivan -
Twins ) As for Gordon Ave., I spent a lot of time on & around this street &
hung out around the empty lot on Gordon between Verdun & Wellington ( closer
to Verdun Ave. ) playing football & baseball & other kid's games there. I
hung out with Alec Dandridge who lived a couple of doors south of the lot &
went to school with the Brown's who lived on the west side of the street
near Verdun Ave. Remember Crocker's Store & the original Gregory's Deli on
Verdun Ave., near Gordon with the first 0.25 cent jukebox in the booths that
played a movie in addition to the music. I also hung around Galt Ave just
south of Verdun Ave., with Gwen (Tootsie) Thompson who played softball in
the women's League at Woodland Park.Another name would be Lorraine Thomas
who lived on Wellington next door & upstairs from Rosaire's Bakery. How
about Brian Hartwell who lived on Gordon next door & upstairs from Tootsie.
Sure wish I could communicate with some of these people to-day.
Sorry this has got so long winded but you have brought back a ton of good
memories.
Let's hear more freom you, e.g., your teachers & where did you live in St

Hi Tony_ just had the chance today to look up messages. I remember Alex Dandridge he lived across the street from me. I remember trading comic books at Crockers. Richard and Wallace Brown hung around with my brother Danny Conant as he went to st Willibrord also. Have a little bad news though Richard died when he was in his 30's and Danny died last year. I lived first on Blvd du Lac then we brough a house on 10th avenue just below blvd du lac. I remember the vacant lot on Gordon avenue as we used to play there often. Would you the remember the Groom family on Galt Ave new Bannatyne Ave. Liz was in my classes in SWHS - she had black hair. I left Verdun at 16 and did now graduate from HS there. Finished my HS at nite. I live in Peterbrough Ontario - when I got married. It was nice talking to you Tony.

Hello Tony, Bob Gaboury here, I have really been trying to remember you, the memory is a little hazy. I lived on Gordon at 470, The Legault family lived across the street, The block kids that I remember are George Elkin, lived right next to the vacant lot, Joey Hunt, next door to Alice and Margaret Conant, The Hayes brothers, Terry, Eddy and Cecil. The Le Gare Family who lived further down the street, The Brown family, the Aumais Family directly across the street from our house. I also remember a Gordie that lived down the street, across from the little store in the 300 address range. and a kid we called Bumps, can't remember why we did call him by that name. The legault family at some time before I moved away from Gordon (1957-58) had made a move further down Gordon towards the 300 to 200 address range. I have a cousin that bought one of the houses in 300 block, carrying on the tradition of a family member living on Gordon. The empty lot of course no longer exist, it has an apartment building on it. I recently drove down the alley and noticed that all of the 3 story tin sheds, have been demolished. Don't know when they took them down, but I am sure it has been quite a few years. Here's another family that was living on the corner of Galt and Verdun, The Donnely Family, Understand Patty Donnely passed away a few years ago.Another family that comest to mind is the Ostiguy family, they moved to the US in 1958 or so. Alice, How did you come about the user name as bebbit? Getting the cold weather clothing out for a Christmas and New Years trip to Montreal, already booked in a hotel in Sorel, PQ for a New Years eve bash. ReplyDeleteYes there was a T-Boy real name Kenneth (Kenny) I almost married one of h is brothers that was in the army (Harry). I used to hang around with sister Mary. My Mom and Mrs groom were good friends - knew them when I was about 5. T-Boy died almost 15 years or more of cancer he was young. As for the ostiguys I hung around with their daughter but do not remember her name - they lived on the 2nd floor on Galt ave. I thought of a little bug ( une bebbitt). ReplyDeleteI knew the Groom family very well as I lived in the same building on the corner of Galt and Banantyne in the 40s. We played together with the gang, wich included the Menzies, Pelletiers, Potts, Fantys, Phillip Smith, Gordie Simpson, Raddigans and others wich skip my mind.

ReplyDeleteHi there I too am in your age group. Lived in Kingston, ON since 1974. Lived in several areas of Montreal last being Verdun where I was married. There a few friends left in Verdun; very few, and I still keep in contact. One being Bernice Maisonet. Most of the Maisonets have gone to that peaceful place in the sky. Others either have passed on or moved to B.C. or Calgary.

ReplyDeleteI am a recent visitor to Verdun Connections and I qualify on the age thing as I am now 74. I went to Woodland School and Verdun High but didn't gratuate. I married Bob Thompson from 3rd Ave. and had a son in Jan 1950 and a daughter in 52. We moved out of Verdun to live in Hudson as Bob was flying for TCA and it became Air Canada. He died in 1975 at an early age of 43 and I remarried and I am living very happily in Staffordshire, England. I keep very active, travel twice a year and was last in Canada in April 2004 with my daughter Karen and two grandaughters of 17 & 20, their first trip to visit Verdun. I do crown green bowling outdoors in summer and on mats in winter and next week, we have a week of shows with a Young at Heart Group. I have a brother Ed who writes frequently in your colums that I have been reading and a sister living in Ville Lasalle, now just Verdun.

My name was Betty Brown and I lived at 1020 Woodland and two other addresses on Woodland. I went to Woodland School and to Verdun High but didn't graduate. I married Bob Thompson who lived on 3 rd Ave. and he was the first air cadet from Verdun High to get trained at the Montreal Flying School on Tiger Moth aircraft and go on to be a Captain with Air Canada. He died aged only 43 from cancer. He played foootball and rugby for the school and some of the people I have read mentioned in your columns, played on the team. Bucky Hollinsworth was a name I remembered. I remarried and now live in Staffordshire, England but still enjoy reading your column and come to Verdun every few years as my sister lives in Crawford Park.

not me but my mom will be 75 this year. She was a Singleton until she married my dad (Lefebvre) and grew up on Desmarchais. We lived in Crawford Park when I was growing up until our family left Quebec in 1983. Laura

ReplyDeleteVery interesting to read these contributions . I fit into this age group - born 1939, lived on Rushbrooke St. until December 1953 when we moved to Vancouver. Left Rushbrooke St. School in June 1953 and attended Verdun High until December of that year. The names of teachers: Miss Prue (spelling?), Miss Phillips, Miss or Mrs. Foster, Miss McCloud, Miss George, Miss Dorian, Mr. Elliot. I knew only a few High School teachers: Mr. Jones for French and Mr. Broughton or Troughton for English.
ReplyDeleteedmi2310. I fit into that age group also. Born 1940. Left Verdun 1960 to join the USMC, returned 1964 to work at The Montreal Stock Exchange, left again in 1972 and went to Vancouver, Washington.
ReplyDeleteAt 75, I guess I just make it in the top range! I went to Woodland School and then on to Verdun High. Not a top student but good in Music (Mr. Cunningham) Gym and sports, Art and a little knowledge along the way which has stood me in good stead in life. I worked at Dun and Bradstreet in the old Montreal area on St. Paul Street and at the Montreal Start on St. James, Dominion Bank on Price Arthur and St. Lawrence before getting married to Bob Thompson (last house on Third ave. near the acqaduct) Bob played football and Rugby and graduated from Verdun High. He won the first Air Cadet training and went on to work for Trans Canada Airlines later to be Air Canada as a Captain. We lived on Argle Ave, near Verdun High and had two children before leaving Verdun to move out to Hudson on the Ottawa River.

ReplyDeleteHi, My brother Ken went to a Funeral in Verdun on the week-end at Wilson Funeral Home. The Minister who conducted the service came up to him after and said he recoginized him from Verdun, and that he went to Rushbrooke School and lived on Joseph St. My brother did not recognize him at all as he was about 15 years younger . The Ministers name was Fred Tiplady, he went to Verdun High School too and graduated in 1956. I know a few people would remember him. He is minister at the Anglican Church in Verdun.. ReplyDeleteHi woodlandbet I am also nearing 75, in Feb. Went to Woodland and VHS graduated 1950 . I followed Bob through Air Cadet flying training in 1949 , joined TCA in 1956 worked with Bob many times and retired in 1992 It was a pleasure to have known Bob.
ReplyDeleteFrom an almost oldie, In Dec I will join the 65-75 Club. I graduated from VHS in 58 and also had Mr Hall for chemisrty for 2 years. In Grade 11, his class was a double period first thing Monday morning. On several occasions I was caught doing homework from the weekend for either english or french class. One time he even told me to be sure to take my homework with me to Plattsburgh so I could get it done and not do it in his class. I had chemistry Mon, Wed and Fri. and it was a Fri. that I was given instructions to take my homework with me. He had friends that had a place in the same park my parents did and did visit from time to time, and I was found out. I think I also had Mr.Mercer for Geometry. Yes those were the good old days!!! Talking about Mr. Mercer I'll always remember being in his class, all we had to do was mention something about the war and he was of telling us all about his experiences. Then remember Ironside? We used to call him tinribs. I remember when he walked into the room his first words were Allen out in the hall. All in fun Bob
ReplyDeleteHey Bob! Victah here in Florida! (VHS 47-52) More on Mr. Mercer! He was our Math Teacher in 9th Grade! He got right to Math with us! Everyone had to be alert, if anyone was dozing, talking or joking around, he'd pull this RED Dowell-like piece of hardwood out of his sportscoat and throw it at the person!!!! Sometimes a hit and pain! He also strapped a few guys on the hands in front of the class. Mr. tough guy! Not very well liked in my time. (We had football players, hockey players and Basketball players in most of my classes, but they maintained quiet in his classes) The last time I saw him was the summer of 1954, the night before my trip to the Alter. We were celebrating at the "Chick-Wick"on Brome Lake. (He liked the Knowlton area.) I walked over to his table and talked to him. Told him he was a good teacher, but a bit of a BULLY, OUT of Control too many times in his classes. He didn't like the comments, but by that time, I was taller and stronger and when he stood up, he realized he'd better get a grip.(We were on COMMON GROUND) He may have noticed the other guys at our table, noticed the empties on the table and sat back down! In retrospect, I'm glad we didn't get carried away! I made it to the Alter on time! As for Mr. Ironsides, it was more relaxing in his classes, I still remember his quick smile (twitch) during his explanations . He was ex-R.C.A.F. Aircrew (WWll) and it seemed to leave him nervous. He was a Good Man! Thanks for awakening a few memories of the "good olde daze!"

ReplyDeleteI played junior football and we had the distinction of losing every game we played. VHS couldn't afford to upgrade out uniforms. We wore the old style leather helmets. The seniors were a much more together team in the mid fifties especially with coach MacFarlane. I forget the junior coach' name but he did the very best he could.
ReplyDeleteI had MacFarlane for junior basketball, and he was a powerful inspiration for us. I posted some basketbal pictures (bantam, junior and senior) on 'Verdunites at Heart' album.

Hey secondave I think we played for the same junior team. I can't remember winning a single game. Troughton was our coach but I don't remember much coaching. I remember some of our teammates, Garry Dearn, Charlie Poxon, Brian Mullens, Ozzie Ostopowich.. They were a good bunch of guys. Wayne Brien

ReplyDeleteHi There, I am not in that age group but my Mother is. She attended VHS. Her maiden name is Maureen Allan. There were a bunch of Allans, all now in that age range pretty much. Her sister Joan, was a competitive swimmer and she had brothers Bob, Doug, George, Bill and Bruce. I think they lived on Allard for a while. Maureen is now in Ontario and has been since 1981. Only her brother Bill is still in the area ..LaSalle now. Does anybody remember the these Allan's?

I just found this site and am disappointed that no one seems to be using it any more. I must say, Bruce, that I didn't know any of those people, but I think they went to a different elementary school. ??? I went to Bannantyne School eons ago. I am about to turn 71.. Robbie Brannan is my name and I had two brothers (both deceased too early).. Tommy and Les. We lived on Wellington St. above Grovers (the original one), across from Gregory's Smoked Meat. Ring any bells? Hopefully more people find this site. I moved to Toronto in 1980 and now live in Oshawa.

I just monitor the site from time to time and try to acknowledge when someone leaves a note.
