 Ok....Who remembers...??? COME ON PEOPLE!!

Barry don't feel bad my father used to get me to scoop up the
horse manure off the street in front of our flat. He wanted fertilizer
for his tiny garden. Colossal embarrassment for this too cool 10 year
old.

Horses used to deliver everything in the forties: Ice, rag pick up,
milk, bread. My grandfather worked at the bakery stables on Reille
(sp?) Avenue, I think, between Bannantyne and Verdun.

  1. During the winter, some of the horses frozen deposits
made great pucks for our daily street hockey games.

I remember my dad calling to have me clear out the
snow that the plows piled up against the street curbs
so he had a place to park in front of our flat. I
would have to stand there with my wooden shovel and
guard the cleared out space so no one else would take
his spot before he drove home. On cold nights he would
put a naked electric light bulb next to the car engine
and throw a blanket under the hood. It was quite a
sight to look down the block and see an array of
extension chords ,across the sidewalks, wiggling out to
    the parked cars.
On the cornors, where the plows piled up a mountain of
snow, we would hollow out tunnels and crawl in. A
terrible safety hazard when I think back to it now.
How many of you remember seeing kids 'bumper shining'
behind the brown city buses, holding on the rear
    bumper for dear life!
I remember the bus tickets came in a perforated
strip,blue-green in color and 6 cents each I think.
