already have a copy of this tape in my humble collection. The entire
movie takes place in Montreal. Very interesting story. Anyone familiar
with other Montreal films?

Yes, Ste Agathe is approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours north of Montreal. When I

went to see it in the movie theatre on Ste Catherine street. I forget the
name of that theatre but I am sure someone else will remember!

Betty do you remember the Montreal location film, 'Agnes of God'?
ReplyDeleteAnother movie made in Montreal stared Robert Shaw and his real wife,
who played Irish immigrants. Cannot remember the title however.
Montreal is a beautiful city so there must have been many such movies I
think.

Agnes of God was a pretty poignant film. Didn't it star also Mia Farrow? I
ReplyDeleteremember when they sold Nun's Island. It consisted of a barn, a convent and
the priests home. I heard rumours after it was sold and they tore down these
buildings, it was discovered that there were tunnels underground connecting
all of the buildings and that they found the skeletons of several babies
buried in the barn! I often wondered if that movie was some how linked to
Nun's Island. Remember, you could only get to it by boat.
Montreal is quickly becoming the movie mega centre they said it would be 20
years ago. I remember reading an article about some Hollywood magnets
wanting to purchase the old piers down at the port and turn them into sound
stages.
Where I live in Ste Anne de Bellevue, they are making movies year round.
There is a famous road and town called Senneville, All the old mansions are
along this road that were build as cottages by many famous people. There are
a few of the mansion owner who rent out to the movie people. There one guy
(he used to own the Perette chain and sold out to Couche Tard) who rents all
the time. There have been at least 4 movies filmed there.

Hi Bettyloo, I told you it was the Seville that was closest to the Forum. My friend was the projectionest there for years. They had the most up to date sound system in Montreal in the 70's. That was the theater to go see a movie that had rock or disco music in it. Dannyb--

ReplyDeleteDanny, When men like Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra appeared at the Seville there was always a sign at the side of the stage saying "Suit by ................" I can't remember the name of the tailor, can you? I remember he was on Notre Dame near the old 'Hale Hakala'. Ed

The Hale Hakala Club was at the corner of Notre Dame and McGill, I know as I worked for Tony the Taylor, the owner's name was Tony Guinta, from 1950 to 1956 and was above the club. ReplyDeleteAh Yes Guy, Thank you. It all comes back to me now, the absent minded professor said as he peed into the wind. Tony the Tailor used to give a free suit to entertainers so his name could be seen on stage. I once met Jimmy Durante coming out of Tony's. I was standing with my friend in front of his hardware store across the street. We had painted footsteps on the sidewalk leading into the store. He followed the footsteps in and said, "Dis is a great idea but howda I find my way out." Durante was a lot sharper than people gave him credit for. One time he used to do a TV show with the massive opera singer Helen Trauble. He walked into her dressing room one night and caught her naked. Her piercing scream froze the blood of all within hearing. Durante emerged shaking and looking into the faces of all staring at him, he said "Nobody knows the Trauble I'Ve seen." Ed

Jimmy Durante -- a great Italian! He did an act in Vegas with Rose Marie (Dick Van Dyke Show) as supporting entertainer. She could do an amazing immitation of the man.
ReplyDeleteThere is a very tacky and gory B movie made in the 70s....IT shows several shots of Verdun and Lasalle and Guy street...I remember watching it a second time just to see the locations....

ReplyDeleteMontreal Movies,............I came across this site,that may be of interest to anyone ,who like movies with a Montreal content: Movies, Memories and Montrealby Zev Asher I was born in Montreal but tend to move around a lot (I am prone to wandering). A number of great feature films that have been made in Quebec's big city have helped to capture its unique cultural climate. Like steamies, smoked meat and souvlaki, these treats bear repeated consumption for me as a form of memory re-coding. My parents' generation get their hometown hankerings from films like Ted Kotcheff's "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" (1974) and "Joshua Then and Now" (1985). I look elsewhere. Several remarkable feature films captured the essence of life for disenfranchised anglophones on the margins of early 1970's Montreal. Frank Vitale's "Montreal Main" (1974) has a neo-hippie failed artist courting a young pretty boy while various low-brow characters cavort aimlessly. His "East End Hustle"(1976) has some seriously shady whore-mongering going on along with violent redemption for the hookers. Allan Moyle's The Rubber Gun Show" (1977) has many of the same people involved in the production (as Montreal Main) and is more abstract, humorous and drug-addled. Gritty realism and a dark sense of humour mark these films as overlooked classics of Montreal cinema. ReplyDeleteThe Score with Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Marlon Brando is a fantastic movie made in 2001 that was filmed in Montreal. The movie opens in Boston but immediately travels to Montreal. I have this movie on DVD and have seen it about ten times. There is lots of outdoor action. You will see your favorite spots in Montreal for sure-Fresco
