Okanagan Valley Fires

My thoughts and prayers   go out to all the residences of the beautiful Okanagan Valley where they have been fighting fires to no avail.

With so many members of Verdun Connection living out west I hope you stay safe and that the situation will change soon so you can get back to your normal way of life.

Here is a report from the CBC on the situation today August 4th 2009 where residents have to leave their homes.

Your right it's a serious situation in many parts of BC....& it's been going on for several weeks now,all over the Province, here's a a map from Gov't of BC showing Fire Danger around the province...
http://bcwildfire.ca/Weather/Maps/danger_rating.htm
As you can see by the map the Danger Rating for almost the entire Province is either High or Extreme, even here on the Island ,although our weather has cooled off a bit from the plus 30's we were experiencing ,People need to be careful if they are travelling or camping throughout the Province.....
We have firefighters coming in to help from Australia & New Zealand,.....Thank You !!
the Fire fighters here are absolutely beat, tired & exhausted...............

Lets pray that rain arrives real soon. There are new records being set almost every day for high temperatures and days gone by without a trace of rain. Here in Vancouver, Washington we have been very fortunate regarding forest fires. We live in one of the 12 most dangerous areas. so far so good......

Hi Winston your area looks not too bad right now,but you have some Fire Activity going on not too far away from you too. Have a look at this link.

This map shows activity right around you as well as towards the border areas too.... It's been a very dry summer here since May................take care there.

Let's hope the West receives much needed rain soon to help stop the spread of these devastating forest fires. We're all thinking of you and send our best wishes from the heart....Diane

OMG!!! Would you believe that the fires are as far north as Alaska and that they are getting help from Vermont.

I had no clue as to how wide spread these fires were what with vacation and visitors didn't pay much attention to the news but the more I read the more threatening the situation becomes to so many people.
Please Mother Nature give the fire fighters a hand , you served them a big plate.

The Lillooet fire is now under control & residents are allowed to return to their homes, the Fire fighters did a super job, As it turns out the fire fighting network for froest fires is a close one ,as help as come from all over the world,BC has had over 2200 fires so far this year,& presently has something like 800 still going, and we are technically only in week two of what they refer to as the Fire Season....Yikes!!
checkout the maps from one of my previous posts & that will show updated information on the status of the provinces fires....... Finally we have some forecast for rain,I hope they get it in the interior of BC too, they certainly need it.................. here also is a link to a web page showing & detailing many of the Fires going on right now,,, http://bcwildfire.ca/

Checkout these Flying Tankers, generally they would be fighting fires in BC. but our Gov't said they couldn't afford to keep them on stand by (but we can send Billions out of the country,,lol but that's another story) These are called the Martin Mars Bombers,.presently one is on stand by in California & one is up here in Pt Alberni...these things are huge, They are privately owned now.

Here's a video of the Mars Bombers,..fortunately for me I have also had the oportunity to fly over these beasts and see for myself how large they reall are, they absolutely dwarf any planes that pull along side them in the water..... Just fantastic planes:

this secoond video actually shows a better perspective of how big the plane is & also shows it taking on water from the lake.....

the third video shows the Bomber performing for the crowd:

http://www.globaltvbc.com/world/Fires+fought+without+super+soakers/1865265/story.html

I guess BC cancelled its insurance policy (Martin Mars Super Soakers) after a slow season last year. Owner of the Martin Mars water bomber Wayne Coulson was told by B.C. they felt they had ample aircraft for an average season”.
It doesn't seem like an average season.
Others opinions expressed in regards to the super soakers - B.C. is spending its fire suppression money far more effectively-Mars are impressive but not effective-Less effective in high elevations-Lack of adequate lakes to bomb up water bombers in some areas .

I guess time will tell if they made the right decision.

Hi Les.....The latest news here is that the Terrace Mountain Fire is 40% contained...this is our biggest concern, but at least today there is a blue sky instead of smoken-red !

Got to hand it to you- you guys are really brave to live under those conditions for so long.
40% contained doesn’t mean you’re out of danger. Hope the weather cooperates so the fire fighters can continue to keep the fires in check......Pauline

Hi Cookie , I did hear that Terrace Mtn. can fire back up quickly,.keep an eye on the TV(or radio) & be ready to exit if needed. Rain is supposed to be on the way, although they said that for here too & all we've seen so far was a light sprinkle..... take care HV&RV
