Verdun Fire Stations starting from 1900. There is also the firestation at the corner of Verdun and Osborne but I seem to have lost the photo. I will post it when found. The 2 first photos are the same station but was modified.

I finally found the last Verdun firestation in the SHGV archives. Here is the firestation at the corner of Verdun and Osborne. The old photo shows the firestation in the middle of the field , only grass and no buildings in the vicinity. It also specifies Woodland but this must be a mistake or perhaps there is another explanation. It is undated but my guess is about the early 1920s based on old maps also from our archives. The firestation still exhists and was converted to a residential building as shown on the present photo. It also housed a trade school probably in the 50s. Perhaps some members have recollections of this firestation to add to it's history. Guy

ReplyDeleteHi. Guy I went to that school 1950 i was in 4th grade I was going to St. Will. That school filled up and i was sent there 1 year it was St. Th. M. kids from as far as 4th ave went there.

ReplyDeleteCarver, What you are saying is that it was used as an elementary school in the early 50s. This is interesting information for our archives and that it was the St Thomas Moore Elementaty School. Guy

ReplyDeleteWhatelse.....of course,..........for tall skinny people you figure........hahahaha Thanks lad: Nowadays many old public buildings have gone the way of the Condo Fever but I have to admit the Firestation in Westmount ( I think it was) looks like it would be a cool building to live in,... but I really would have reservations of living in some of those old warehouse / factory's building alond the Lachine Canal...................that ground has got to be not very good for you. Or the old Sherwin Williams Bldg,...that place was full of many a toxic chemical......... Even a lot of Church's have been bought by private owners & turned into personal residences,......wopuld be kind of neat i guess,.certain;y would be interesting to see ,since I didn't spend much time in them as a kid........but sure could use that dime for 'other' good stuff..........like comics,candy,cigarettes (2/nickel) ....hahahaha
ReplyDeleteHI. Guy Yes how long after I can't remember I seem to remember a library there i think after that. I think I spent the entire year looking at the patched up circles in the ceiling. Moaning the fact that they could of at least left the poles for us kids to move from one floor to the other not very considerate of them. Ron.
ReplyDeleteGrade one at St.Thomas Moore School 1954/55 at the Old St.Thomas Moore Church on Bannantyne and Moffat Grade two at St.Thomas Moore School 1955/56,at the Old St.Thomas Moore Church Guy I don't remember if before 1954 it was in the old Firestation. My third grade 1956 started with a make shift classroom in the Gym and then moved upstairs All this was because of the newer addition to St.Thomas Moore School,which gave it the T shape. Steve

ReplyDeletealways nice to see old black and white pictures of Verdun.I am trying to think, was there a firestation in Crawfordpark, or did they come from Verdun.Did any of you people know the O'Riellys from Crawfordpark , the sons ,i think were all firemen and the father was mayor for a long time.A very good family.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't the date on this pic say Oct 21st 43 or 25th ??? ....these Btw were the Police Detectives,.not the Fireman,but it was taken of course in front of the Police/Fire Dept on Lasalle ,that's for sure:.................. ReplyDeleteI have pic's of my granfather standing beside his fire truck , I'm going to try & find it, my mom has it I think! Before my grandfather (Daniel MacPherson) was a firemen he was a police officer.....and I was born in 1954 so that would have been in the 30's-40's and then he passed away in 1956. Lynn
ReplyDeleteLynMac I hope you can find those pictures,.& maybe share them with us ,.all that stuff is neat to see,...Maybe the firetruck he's standing beside is the one that ended up in Parc Richard on the Boardwalk behind the Station & beside the old Stadium,.I played on that truck as a kid,.I suspect many Verdun kids did the same.......Hope you find it............... Les, Here is another photo of the station on Church. It is difficult to identify but look at the upper right hand corner of your photo, you will notice the white corner stone of the arch is similar to my photo, therefore I am sure that your photo is the one on Church. The station on my photo would have been taken after it was converted to an office building as the large doors where replaced by windows. Guy
