  9. I OFTEN wonder why we use the words ‘catty’ and ‘cattiness’ to describe certain kinds of women and their distinctive behaviour. After all, it is not as if cats are creatures that lurk around making quietly poisonous remarks about others, or waste hours every day gossiping, or make tart remarks, â€¦ all those things that ‘catty’ women do. I have noticed lately that ‘catty’ behaviour is actually rather depressingly dominant in some middle aged women. 'Cattiness' is not remotely appealing. I find that it betrays a coldness of the heart.

  21. When I try to get onsite I'm told "Cannot find page"  Temporarily overloaded. " I'm trying to figur it out. When they say overloaded do they mean that they are overloaded or we are overloaded. If they are overloaded then they should download something and if we are overloaded then we should download something. Or is there a program called "Upload this download program to solve overloading . What exactly do they mean by overloading? Are they referring to my chair? My chair should not be overloaded, I bought the strong one for that reason. If me downloading some weight would solve the problem I will cut out my night time cookie for the sake of my fellow Verdunians. Perplexed.          Ed

  22. Edbro,   Are you sure it says "Overloaded" and not "loaded"...because hic we all know what that means, eh? hic

  23. Interesting sign off: Mitakuye Oyasin is Lakota Sioux for "All My Relations." It is a prayer of oneness and harmony with all forms of life: other people, animals, birds, insects, trees and plants, and even rocks. It reminds us that we are connected to these other aspects of Creation, that we share a common kinship in the Hoop of Life.   I can relate that to the word Pantheist,............  sort of Appreciating everything in nature, without having to join a building on the corner, with a basket on the end of a wicker stick..........................................and knowing there's is something in charge of those lightning bolts................hahahahahah   I will out that in the I've learned something new today column,....Thanks

  25. Hey Les,   Just got back from the movies with my son and grandson,,,saw Wild Hogs,,,,very funny movie ,,,laughed all the way through it!!   You mentioned Mitakuye Oyasin. Are you familiar with First Nations culture? It is  Lakota as you say. The Lakota were given the name "Sioux" by their enemies,,,,means snake. I have spent time in their territory They are part of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Nations. I have been a student of the First Nations Peoples for almost 40 years now. It all started in the Longhouse of the Mohawks in Kanewake when I lived in Verdun. Now I find myself in the Longhouses of the west coast,,,,,interesting journey.   You mention pantheism. Contrary to popular belief, the People did not worship nature. The Creator was at the center of all they did,,,,,,24/7/365. Every step was as a prayer. I have learned much from the Elders and their teachings as I have travelled this land from coast to coast. They have always been generous of spirit and have shared freely. I can only hope to share the honour and respect that they have shown me. One day we might meet and sit and talk of our experiences in this life. Seems that we reflect on these things as we grow older!!   Mike   Mitakuye Oyasin......All my Relations

  26. Yes Long before I ever heard the word Pantheist,....I appreciated all of nature,..and more so ,experiencing the Mountains ,......and all of our Westcoast,.........   knowing or thinking as I said, that this was something to be in awe of ,........ As for First Nations culture,.I have been lucky ,in a way that,I got to meet some interesting characters, over the years,....many of the Hunt family,.whose father & grandfather was Mongo(Mungo) Martin,..................the Royal BC Museum here in Victoria had many artifacts on loan from him,........perhaps still do I suspect,(but it's been a while since I have been there),...... His sons are all well known carvers,...bentwood boxes,.masks ,.etc etc. One of my sisters also knows Roy Henry Vickers quite well,.......(she also knows all the Hunts I mentioned too) .....I unfortunately I have not met Roy Henry Vickers (myself),....but I would like to ,.....I have 5 of his prints on the wall in the living room ,.as well as some other prints from other artists,......also have an old silver ring (thunderbird) made by Alfred Seaweed,..........have had it for over 30 years I like the connection to Nature,.......and I appreciate it.......... Party'd hardy with Stan and some of his family many years ago........... Sounds like your journey has been interesting,......so far.                                               I'll see if I can take a photo of the Coffee table carved by one of the Hunts,.my brother has had it for years,.....he also had the first Bentwood Box,carved by Stan Hunt,....but over the years had to part with it ......( at least a guy we know bought it,.and still has it).......My brother hated to part with it,..but sometimes Life dictates otherwise...( that's code for sometimes were all broke,.and have to sell).............hahahahahah              Have a Good Night ................I'm checking out for now, ps: Sounds like you had a good night with your son & grandson,.....made me think of calling my son Chris........maybe tomorow I will............

  27. For Les....glad that you are feeling better....   For Mike Stark....your stories about the Elders are great...I know that they have a duty to inform the younger peoples about the past and future...have you ever been told anything about 2012??...Interesting to know....by the way...I think you were in my class in grade 5 at Bannantyne with Miss Denison..also Mike James....also the picture of the grad class of grade seven...the boy named Gordie ?...that was Gordie Smith from 4th ave....believe he is passed on.....   Happy Spring Everyone    June

  28. Les, When you go to Alberta do you drive and if so what route do you take? I loved the two years I ran Vancouver to Calgary? Edmonton for Hunt's Transport. There's nothing compares to the Rockies.               Ed

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Ed,..........I generally take the path of least resistants,..............meaning I take the Southern(Central) route,....if i'm headind to cowtown,............or I take the somewhat Northern Route ,around Kamlloops ,.and on the Yellowhead,./.........if I'm headed towards Edmonton..........blah blah blah.....................  but in the case of next weeks trip We are (the whole family) are flying,...and staying the week plus ,timeframe,....and I will either buy something to head back with (which Mammasan hates, when I slip some biz in).......hahahahha  and She's the Boss......So I may not be allowed to do something I want.............................................    or I'll be flying back ,...which is what I'm told is going to happen.......................................hahahahhaha

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow sorry Ed,..........some terrible spelling there,............. I take the obvious routes,in getting to Alberta,........................and I hate every one of them.(love the routes leaving there though)...............hahahahhaha ................

  31. hi June,   I remember you too. You mentioned Gordie Smith,,,,sorry to hear that he has passed. Do you know when? I don't really remember Miss Denison,,,kind of a blur. I remember miss Lacey in grade 3 , I think and Miss Friedman in grade four,,,,she was one for colouring her hair,,,,do you remember her? I had Miss Forbes in grade 7 and she died halfway through the year,,,,a great teacher,,,,had her in 1+2 also. I think that Ronnie Bombardier lived up your way. How about Brian and Wayne Turner?   Take care,   Mike   Mitakuye Oyasin

  34. Les,   Hope you have a good trip whatever route you plan on using coming or going.  Spring has arrived here and the snow has almost disappeared --- gone if you live on the sunny side of the street.  You should have a nice spring wedding.  Might find the roads slushy and watch out for the potholes.  Bloody big here!   Dolly

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Sabby ,,that is good news (snow being gone),....We will have a good time I'm sure,... I am going to appreciate this trip at least getting there,.because We're flying in,....but as much as I've driven in this Great Country we have,.I have now tired of the roadtrip to anywhere almost,..but especially if I have to go to Edmonton,..the Drive always seems like such a long affair,.....(unless you ask Teresa,.she informed me that Our last trip there in Sept,.was our fastest yet.....hahahahaah  Guess I do use the long skinny pedal a bit..........hahahahaha but i find as I get a little older ,.I almost dread the thought of the trip there,.until I'm on the road,.then I'm an A2B ,guy as fast as I can.......YIKES   ........this time I will get to read for an hour  or so,on the flight ,.....and that is will be nice for a change,...................... Hope your right a nice Spring Wedding..............................

  36. I hear ya Les.  I feel the same way.  And I don't drive!  I like the end destination but it's the getting there.  Sometimes I wish I could zap myself like on Star Trek and just be there.    I've been on the elevator at work going home and thinking, wouldn't it be nice if I just stayed on this elevator and it brought me right to my doorstep!  ha!  Well, I am getting old.  The journey isn't as much fun now as the destination.  :-)   Dolly

    ReplyDelete
  37. I used to think like you guys....give me the destination....by now that I'm more mature (hehehe) the whole trip is the journey.  I love it all....stopping to see venues, stopping to do  flea marketing, hike a little....It's almost as important as the destination.   Going to Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston and who knows where else.  We start off with a general direction, and we wander, take side trips and generally cover a lot of territory.   Lucky for me I enjoy my other half's company so I don't really need anybody else (other than our furkid) along to make the journey enjoyable.   Les hope you have a safe/happy trip.

  38. Hi Mike....Yes Gordie was a very good friend of mine when we were teans..but lost track of him...then while at a funeral I heard that he had passed, that was about 6-8 years ago.....Yes...I had Miss Lacey too...remember her crying in class alot for some reason...Friedman and especially Forbes rings a bell, but no faces....I had Mr.Fabb in grade 7...what a trip he was...Do you remember Miss Bruce  1st grade...I couldn't wait to grow up to I could beat her up, she was so mean to me..and others too... The Turner boys I think lived on 2nd Ave...but I only know the name..don't remember ever meeting, though I might have..Anyway it was a nice time...safe eh?   Be Well      June

  39. Hi maybelle,.when you mention the Turners (and being on 2nd av) it sort of rang a bell for me,.I think they lived on the bottom floor (which was always the ultimate goal ,was to get a bottom flor flat.....hahahahaha For some reason I'm rememberring a Walter Turner 9maybe) could he have been the father,..I also Remember that the Lenihan family lived above them (I think???) on the 3rd floor..............

  41. Wendy ~~~ I guess as a former secretary who took Pitman shorthand (very very many moons ago hehe) I tend to write in the shortest steps possible.   Thanks to good old Mr. Cumming (VHS) I still revert to my shorthand skills sometimes ~ it still comes in handy.   And, as an empty-nester, all my human kids are on their own and this little four legged, furry munchkin has taken their place.....and sometimes.....just as much trouble as my kids were!!!
