  3. I was very  sad to hear that Gump had passed away.He was a great goal-tender one of the best.I read the artical, he was quite a character.I remember when he played hockey he said he hated flying.I heard that he would take the train.Back then there were only six teams that coulden't be done today with 30 teams it would take 3 days to get to Vancouver by train. No face masks in those days and the equipment they wore. When you look at  pictures of Gump it looks like all he has is a chest protector, pads and goalie gloves.Today's goalies have so much gear on, I don't know how they can manouver around the net.I guess they are in better shape than they were 40 years ago lots of training now I guess. My condolances to the Worsley  family. May Gump Rest In Peace.God Bless

  4. I got the news this morning reading the sports section of La Presse. The article says that he originatd from Verdun and resided in Beloeil. The news broke out in the Gazette. He was traded for Jacques Plante, Phil Goyette, Don Marshall and Dave Balon for the Gump, L챕on Rochefort and a player from the minor league. He was with the Canadiens in the 60s when they won 4 Stanley cups in seven years. He died at the Centre Hospitalier Honor챕 Mercier de Saint Hyacinthe. It was not wideley cerculated of his sickness and whereabouts so this came as a toal surprise. Another of the old Forum ghosts is gone. Very sad. I will add him to my list of famous Verdunites. Guy

  7. So sad to hear about the Gump. When I was a kid our
summer home was in Val - David . The Montreal Canadians would go there during
the playoffs. They satayed at the La Sapinaire Hotel.
We would wait out side the Hotel for them. What a
    thrill !
I met The Gump, The Rocket. Terry Harper and pretty
much the whole team. They were all very nice to us kids . Who bugged them on a
    daily basis.
I remember Gump being afraid of flying.
We would ask them some silly questions., like "What did you eat for
Breakfast ?   Those were the day's my
    friend!

  9. When I was a young kid growing up in verdun, my dad had a bad work related
accident he was in the Montreal general hospital. Ironically at the same
time, my dad's roommate(I guess you could call him that) happened to be the
Gumpper. The one and only time he ever broke his leg. Me, and my family used
to visit every day.(Of course, spoke to Gump as much as I did to my dad.One
day we went to visit and my dad was there with another roommate (The Gumpper
was discharged)I never got to say goodbye(Sounds sad eh!) Well, low and
behold, my dad had a green garbage bag next to his bed that he gave me. Of
course I had to check it out because it was pretty heavy and believe it or
not inside the bag was the cast that Lorne had on his leg signed (All the
best with your future hockey career, Your friend Lorne Gump Worsley. It also
had most of the other Canadians signatures on it.To this day it still hangs
on my mom's wall in the basement at her home in Verdun. And that's my only
story about meeting one of the nicest guys I knew.

    Darren

  12. Here is another excellant photo of the Gump wich appeared in La Presse this morning. It is taken from a hockey card. Most of the ceremony was for Ken Dryden last night  prior to the Hockey game between the Habs and the Senators. Although the hommage was well deserved I can't help but think that it was politically inspired. There was hommage made for the Gump for only a few minutes and had it not been for hommage to Ken, there would have been a more time spent to honor the great Lorne Worlsley. Guy

  13. Well Guy in all fairness,.the Retirement of Ken Dryden's #29,.was planned quite a while ago,..and was postponed once due to the death of Boom Geofrion,...they (the Habs) were too retire both Dryden & Lafleur's sweaters way back in the Fall,........ as much as any death is always Untimely,..I seriously doubt that there was any 'political' motivation to it,.......... When you can get get 22000 people to stand for a moments rembrance,I see that as Great Respect,...and certainly an Honour to Gump,.... and I guess as in real life, things do continue on, I thought it was well done, .................................(Just a thought)

  14. Sorry Guy ,..I meant to say Serge Savard's sweater back in the fall,...as Guy Lafleur's was retired 20 years ago........hahahahah around mid 80's I think last year was Boom Boom Geofrion (early last year),..and then Serge Savard's in the Fall of 2006 ,.....and planned at that time in the Fall was the Jan 29th date to coincide with Dryden's #29,.............

I hope you didn't mined the reference to Johnny
Jellybean yesterday. I enjoy your messages.

  16. Les-F, I mentioned in my comments that Ken deserved to be honored but I still feel that it was partially politically  motivated, lasted too long and there should have been more time spent to honor the Gump or perhaps honor him more extensively on another night. A 10 second moment of silence is too short for such a great sportsman. Guy

  17. Not to sure if anyone knew this about Gump...he owned a family restaurant in Dorval called the Satelite..across from the Dorval Shopping Centre.

  18. Hi Les..I think Ken Dryden's retirering of his jersey was cancelled because of the Dawson shooting. I think the shooting was on Friday and his jersey was suppose to be retired on the Saturday.I think Boom Boom passed away the same day his jersey was retired the family decided to go ahead with the cerimonies. It was suppose to be a happy night for the Boomer it was a very sad night for the fans and his family. He never did get to see his jersey up on the rafters. He did get one wish, he said he wanted to be next to Howie Morenze (spelling) that is where his jersey is, next to Howie.

  20. Hello Guy ,.I guess we'll agree to disagree,..as the Dryden night was planned well in advance of Gump's departure,...and was timed to coincide #'s wise withthe 29th,.....as for long drawn out affairs,...I agree the Canadiens have long since drawn out every miniscule event ,into a red carpet affair,.....it has been a long standing joke amonst many hockey fans that ,almost every game they had to have some sort of ceremony........it is almost embarrasing.////// However they never did that nonsense when they were winning Cups,it really is an annoyance but they did it in the Forum & now continue this stuff in the Bell Center,.......I still see no corellation to Politics,......as the night was postponed but not for the reasons you suggest,...just a matter of timing.........but I would bet Gump would have something more down to earth to say about it../Like BullSh*&/////////////hahahahah  He wouldn't be bothered by timing at all,.....(my thoughts),..........and I doubt he chose his time to expire,......or be celebrated,...who knows maybe he'll be honoured at a later date........but the Habs are not easy with retiring sweaters or numbers,.....if that were the case,.....they would have to reinforce the roof to support the sweatrs who could be retired.......many a hab is not in the raftors. Gump doesn't need accolades ......He' earned his the old fashion way he worked for it................

  21. When lived in Dorval. 1956 till 1970, drove cab partime. Gump once asked me, would I like to manage his restaurant, told him sorry, have two jobs now and dont have a clue about this type of business.. So its still there the Satelite, in a small strip mall.
