Rented 'Cinderella Man'. Wow! Totally inspirational. I have enjoyed
ReplyDeleteevery film Ron Howard has directed. A James Braddock is what
professional boxing needs now, a hero to admire. The great Italian
Rocky Marciano was the last in my opinion. Of course he was of my time.
I listened to the fights on the radio with my father on 2nd Ave.

Listened to the Ron Howard commentary of the 'Cinderella Man' DVD. The
ReplyDeletemovie was made in Toronto, and the Madison Square Garden fight scenes
were all filmed in the Maple Leave Garden, which apparently resemble
the old M.S.G.

ReplyDeleteBeing self sufficient vs being irresponsible. We should all take the
example of James J. Braddock the heavy weight champ in the 20s and 30s.
During the worst of the depression, he was forced to take welfare for
his wife and 3 kids because of injuries which prevented him from boxing
-- his profession. When he began to make his amazing come back, he
stood in line at the welfare office and returned every penny without
telling anyone including his faithful wife Mae. The story got out
anyway, and was front page stuff! Years later, he went on to beat the
dangerous Max Bear. He inspired a whole generation. Hard working family
man devoted to his wife and kids. Rare these days.

In honor of that day, the Fairmount Historical Museum plans to commemorate that date with the following: James Byron Dean, son of a dental technician and a farmer's daughter, Winton A. and Mildred Wilson Dean, was born February 8, 1931, in the "Seven Gables" apartment house at 4th and McClure Street in Marion, Indiana.
