Atkins diet.

Anyone on or have been on the Atkins diet.
Trying to lose a few extra pounds without over doing my exercise
routine.
Funny, looking at my high school basketball photos on my Verdun
Connections album, I thought I was fat back then. Must be in the head.

  1. Typical breakfast during the week in the 1950s at 457 Second Avenue.
    None, I always got up too late to eat. I walked home from
    Bannantyne/Verdun High to eat lunch. A can of spaghettio's with some
    Wonder white bread. Typical 5 P.M. dinner consisted of 2 sausage links,
    green beans and mashed potatoes and green or red jello. Breakfast on
    the weekend. Rice Crispies (Snap, crackle and pop), milk with a 1/2 cup
    of sugar. Seldom came home for lunch. Dinner, crusty bread and peanut
    butter.
    Food was the last thing on my mind. Now it's right up there with sex,
    however food is more accessible at 65.

  2. Not much feed back on this particular topic so I'll give a weekly
    synopsis of how affective this Atkins Diet is.
    Today is the beginning of the 'Induction phase'. Maximum 20 grams of
    carbs per day for the first two weeks.
    Weigh in -- 256# -- not all fat I am a power lifter.

  4. Hi Sandy, Thanks for the response. Mele Kalikimaka to you and yours. I
    like the winter months here for many reasons and we do decorate our
    homes during Christmas. My Christmas cards have Santa riding a leaping
    dolphin. The city of Honolulu really puts on a Christmas display
    downtown. Huge statues of Santa and family etc.
    As wonderful as it is, I remember the very special feeling generated
    from the displays on Wellington Street so many years ago. Wow!

  5. Well the scale reads 250# this morning. So far lost 6 pounds in 7 days
    on this low carb diet. My hunger left me on the 3rd day; so far Atkins
    has been a snap. To tell the truth, the first 3 days were precarious --
    teetering.
    Children, it can be done though - at least for a week. Let you know
    next Saturday if I do well, or if I crash and burn.

  6. Steak Tips with Mushroom Sauce Submitted By: Amy(my look at a diet)Straightforward grilled steak tips - with slightly salty, hearty sauce that can be used with any cut of beef, and is great for dipping crusty bread into.

    Prep Time: 10 Minutes Cook Time: 40 Minutes Ready In: 50 Minutes Yields: 6 servings INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 pounds sirloin tips, uncut 1/2 (750 milliliter) bottle Burgundy wine 2 (14.5 ounce) cans beef broth 4 portobello mushroom caps, sliced 1/4 cup butter 1 clove garlic, chopped 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste 1 shallot, finely chopped 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour DIRECTIONS Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sautee the shallot until transparent, then add mushrooms, and cook, covered, until darkened, about 5 minutes. Remove mushrooms from pan, and set aside. Deglaze the pan with one can of beef broth, and burgundy wine. Increase heat, and bring to a boil. Allow the mixture to boil until it has reduced by 1/3. Grill the sirloin tips to desired doneness. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Remove to a plate, and set aside. When the sauce is reduced, stir in the other can of beef broth, and garlic. Return to a boil, and continue to cook for another 5 to 10 minutes. Sauce will be thin like au jus. Whisk in flour, and cook until the sauce is the desired thickness. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Stir in the mushrooms. Serve tips with mushroom sauce spooned over.

  9. Sandy, you are a very playful lady. I like that.
    6 pounds water or fat, I'll take it. What I like about this food plan
    is i can eat as much beef, chicken or fish as I want. 2 cups of salad
    and 1 cup of cooked veggies needs to equal 20 grams of carbs, which is
    the limit per day in carbohydrates for the first two weeks. Later I can
    add more veggies, but I have another week to go. Get this though -- no
    hunger!

  10. I have a diet or a way to lose calories after the holidays.It might not be alright to paste it in here.It has no pictures or  swear word,but you wouldn't want the children to read it.I don't mean children  at heart,but the under agers. Steve

  11. 14 days now. Lost another pound for a total of 7 pounds. Haven't had a
    'Big Mac' attack yet and feel energetic. Diet works so far.
    The Atkins' book recommends using Ketostix strips which I do.

  14. Thanks for reminding me Steve. Another pound lighter. 248 lbs. Its been
    3 weeks and one day. I'm eating between 20 and 50 carbohydrates per
    day, and it has been no-sweat dieting. The first week the weight flew
    off, but lately I seem to be shedding 1 pound a week. The book states
    there will be plateaus, so I will not be discouraged in this event.
    The Christmas season is the hardest time to restrict oneself, but if
    Atkins works through the holidays, it will work anytime of year. Lucky
    for me I stopped drinking alcohol (tons of calories & Carbs ) many
    years ago. Had to, shitting blood is the ultimate red flag I think.
    I seldom miss drinking, but I try to look at it as my glass is half
    full. Btw a skeptic says, 'that glass is half empty' and the optimist
    says, 'that glass is half full'. Well the alcoholic says 'are you going
    to drink that?'

  15. Gained one pound. Still plugging along however. I am following the diet
    religiously so I have to assume it is the workouts which are
    responsible for the weight gain. So maybe I'm losing fat and gaining
    muscle -- I hope!
    It is easy without the cravings and hunger.
    I'll give it a few more weeks.

  17. Shazam! 10 pounds lost since the beginning of December. I began at 256#
    and now weigh 246#. Still cravings free, which is the best thing about
    this Atkins diet. I can eat as much as 50 grams of carbohydrate per day
    now, and as much protein as I want. I should add I work out every day
    if possible, but this isn't entirely necessary.
    I should stress: One needs to read the book first. There is also a
    Atkins DVD for sale. I bought one at Costco, but I'm sure it's
    available on-line or at the library.

    50 grams of carbs per day.

  22. Hi Second Ave, Congratulations on your success!!!! We all need support. I tried Adkin's over 2 years ago but it created more problems for me. My Dr. recommened the sports diets which is eating  5 small meals a day.  My quota is 5 -225 calories a day which I have to admit I have not totally adhered to. It's through e-diets on the computer. Gives you meals receipes for everyday of the week and for my diabetic, low salt diet costs only 25.00 per year and they send a nutrition bulletin everyday via email along with a recipe that fits the parameters of the number of calaories to reach your goal.The meals are designed specifically to your health constraints (If you have any) I have many and even with what I have been through the last 15 months sedentary most of the time, due to a bunch of surguries and other problems have now to date lost almost 50 pounds. Hopefully I will continue to improve and get back to rehab and more pounds will fall off. Keep up the good work !!! We all need support in a weight loss challenge!!! I never would have admitted this a few months ago but I now have learned that we all need each other for support and never be ashamed of your successes.     240 pounds this morning. Hopefully by next Saturday I'll break the 240
    mark.

  25. 238 pounds today. Spent a few days in the hospital eating hospital food
    -- yuk! Surgeon advised me to eat more veggies, fruits and grains. So
    now its a 'modified' Atkins Diet for me. By the book works no doubt.
    I'll continue on losing weight, but without the ketosis, which does a
    great job of eliminating the cravings. I believe if I eat whole foods,
    and absolutely no processed foods, I'll lose. However I'll need to deal
    with cravings from time to time.

  27. No Sandy it wasn't the diet. I have had acid relex for most of my adult
    life. What happens is the valve that prevents food from backing up from
    the stomach is weakened and the stomach acid comes up to lay in the
    esophagus while sleeping, and gradually over years wears away the
    lining, and in my case a weakened esophagus blood vessel ruptured. They
    cauterized it and sent me home after 4 days of IVs, needles, and the
    beep beep machines.
    Btw my 42 year old son has the same problem I just discovered. It's a
    family disease.
    I had a good gym work out today. Strong like bull, and very careful of
    what goes in the tummy.
