  2. Hi DannyB  ......I keep a close eye on who's joining , and because Maggie & I beleive in no ( or little,) censorship .....we allow new 'members ' to stay until they post something ......check through this site and see if your e-mail address is listed and then change your settings.....I would suggest that if there are members using the site to run a business instead of communicating with ex-Verdunites......then everyone shouls take a look at their settings......I have 'broomed ' as many ( and a few in the last few days) solicitation type e-mails .........I try ot get them as quick as they come in.....but i can't be awake 24/7 ( although it does seem like it at times) ......hahahaha  We are trying to avoid having to ask new memebers to sign in ......We've remained an open site ,and would like to continue to do so.( no passwords or elitest type of joining our club stuff) ......but We encourage every memeber to alert us to spy-bot type of msg's and we will deal with them accordingly.......you may want to check your settings on other msn sites as well ......I belong to a few and I don't get all that much e-mail ..but when I do I suspect it's from soemone having joined an msn site and now looks for your sign in name........   Thanks for the heads up  Have Fun & Remember Verdun...

  12. A little on spamming, the Can Spam Act in the US is not working, it did not do much to stop the spamming, as a matter of fact there are enough loop holes in it to be able to spam legally.   I myself conduct business on the intermet, and my pc stays online for 10 to 15 hours a day, if you are on line or your information is listed in a public domain, the software will pickup on it and the spammer now has a known live email address added to his data base.   Because of my lengthy stay online, many spammers end up with my email address in their data base. It's something I have to live with and I compare it to the junk mail that I get at home. My email system can determine if this is a possible spam or not, if it is it send it to what I call my Spam Locker.   I receive 100 to 150 spam emails a day on my main email address, on my other 4 email addresses,  that are seldom on line I may get 2 or 3 a day. Quite a difference!   I would not go changing this groups policies, for a few email spams that some members may have received. Spamming is something that we all are learning to live with, and with experience you learn to spot them quickly. Definitely do not respond to them, as this just lets the spammer know that he has a live email address that is resellable. Ttrash them as you would junk mail that arrives in your postal box    The best thing to do is to report the spammers to your ISP, they are all diligently trying to locate, capture and prosecute spammers.   Bob G in California

I could of swore that you are always on there, without fail if someone needs help I see your responses go out at all times of the day and night.   Keep up the good work.   We must keep the same hours, little sleep and too much computer time.   What did our forefathers do to keep busy after retirement, no gameboys and no PC's.   My grandpa spent a lot of time playing Bochhi Ball and telling long winded italian stories.

  27. These spammers change their 'return' addresses daily, after they have
sent out a thousand + spams that is. This way it is impossible to
'Bounce to Sender', because it immediately gets sent back to you as
'Address Unknown'. My email software automatically sends all junk to
the junk mail box, which empties when I sign off.

  38. Sorry about that last gobblygook.

Without Spyware software, a worm/virus implanted into your computer can
tell what sites you 'like'. Then sell your email address the the
appropriate Junk Mailer. If your system is slowing down it maybe due to
too many unwanted cookies. The Spyware eliminates them all, and your
tortured PC can breath again. I have an Apple so it is not my problem

  44. Thanks Danny for pointing that out to me. It is a little disturbing. I am wondering what all the recipients have in common. Do you receive the messages posted at VC in your email? Or a daily or weekly Group Report? Check your "email settings"

    ReplyDelete
  45. Re the "Nigerian letters" and similar emails, I don't think there's much of a connection to our emails being on the VC site.  This is pretty much a world wide phenomenon.  These people are likely emailing 10's of thousands daily in the hope for a bite.   A couple of things that I do are: 1) there is an RCMP site that you can forward these emails to.  Can't remember it exactly, but if you "google" Nigerian letters and look for a reference to "phonebuster" that's the RCMP site.  They have an email address you can forward stuff to.   2)  display "full header" on the incoming email.  different email packages do this in different ways.  I think in Outlook you go to Properties and the option to display full headers is there.  This will show the originating IP address, the originating ISP (MSN, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) and a lot of techy stuff. Once you have done this forward the offending email (with full headers displayed) to that ISP using the following adderss:   abuse@ISP.com  (e.g. abuse@hotmail.com)   They will investigate and take action.    But, of course, there's always the DELETE button.  Depends on what mood I'm in.  Some days these things amuse me, others it's just a pain.   Sorry to blather on so long.  Hope this helps.   BobB

    ReplyDelete
  46. After seeing the "header" of the letter in question, I am quite certain there is a connection as all of the recipients are members of VC. That is why I asked about what email lists they may be on. I accept spam as one of the little nusainces of the www and I delete what the filters let slip through. I'm not sure if taking my address off the weekly group report mailing list will make a difference but I am trying it.

  49. Hi Steve   It's probably worthwhile sending it to them.  At least it's "ammunition" for the RCMP to work with.  They probably don't bust a lot of these guys, but they won't get any if they don't see the emails.  I had a good one recently addressed to Dear Sir / Madam...then going on to state they had received my name from someone.  So...why Sir / madam then , if you know my name...duhhh.  Others have stated that someone has died, left a lot of money and was "a national of your country" ...... they never state what country, yet they know he / she is a "national" of my country.  I have to admit , sometimes I get a perverse pleasure out of reading them and seeing just how stupid they are...and yet they must hook someone somewhere.   BobB

  52. Very interesting theory.  I wonder if there's anyway Les_F or Maggie can check the past messages.  I have received messages from all the same sources as some of you (Nigeria, Philippines, China, UK National Lottery, Investor Bulletins) also, and there's only 1 day that I didn't receive any messages from these people, and that is November 10, but unfortunately I can't find a log of my postings that far back.    And another very curious thing, the only place that I use "Noble" as my family name is on this board, period.  I received a message addressed to myself as "Noble", so I presume that there is some kind of connection to VC.   I am wondering if someone joined this message as a "mole" and has access to our Members List, and perhaps 'sell' this list to unscrupulous people.   Not sure....perhaps I read too much tv, but sure is interesting.

Sorry if that last post of mine sounded curt. I didn't mean to sound like that. Typed words don't always carry the tone we want.

These people use a variety of ways to get email addresses. They call it 'phishing". Some of them may be reading email addresses from this site and a thousand others. The best defence we have is to realize, as I know everyone at VC knows , that these offers are just too good to be true. I wouldn't even answer them as a joke. But they are a pain in the behind, I know.

Hell, as I once said, if they were all true, I'd be a billionaire by now, but sadly I'll have to wait for my uncle Paul McCartney to leave me a fortune.

Anyway, once again, Danny...sorry if my post was a bit brusque. I didn't mean it to be.

    54 PORTLAND PLACE,
    LONDON.
    W1N 4AD

    DEAR BELOVED,

PLEASE ENDEAVOUR TO USE IT FOR THE CHILDREN OF GOD.

I am the above named person from LONDON. I am married to MR PATRICK
    GERALD
WELSH who worked with BRITISH embassy in CANADA for nine years before
    he
died in the year 1999. We were married for eleven years without a
    child. He
died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christians. Since his death I
decided not to re-marry or get a child outside my matrimonial home
    which the
Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum
    of
짙7.5 Million (seven Million five hundred thousand pound sterling)with
    an
OFFSHORE BANK  in Europe.Presently, this money is still under the safe
keeping of the BANK. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last
    for
the next SEVEN months due to my cancer problems.Though what disturbs me
    most
    is my stroke .

Having known my condition,I decided to donate this fund to church or
    better
still a christian individual That will utilize this money the way I am
    going
to instruct here in. I want a church that will use this fund on,
    orphanages
and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of
    God
is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand
    that
giveth.I took this decision because I don't have any child that will
    inherit
this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want
    my
husband's hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers and  in an
    ungodly
manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision.

I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I
    am
going to be in the bossom of the Lord. I know that the lord will fight
    my
case and I shall hold my peace.I don't need any telephone communication
    in
this regard because of my health. With God all things are possible. As
    soon
as I receive your reply I forward your personal information to my
    husband's
Attorney in London who will contact the BANK and introduce you as the
    legal
owner of this fund before transfering the fund into your nominated Bank
    Account in your country.

You will be issued a letter of authority by him that will empower you
    as the
original- beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the church to always
    pray
for me because the lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I lived a
    life
of a worthy Christian. Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve
    him
in spirit and truth. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I
stated herein.Your response should be channeled to my alternate email
    acount
    at :( linwelsh@rediffmail.com)

Hoping to hear from you as soon as possible.Remain blessed in the name
