Pat Burns, who was born and raised in Montreal, returned there in 1965 to host his talk show Burns Hotline after leaving Vancouver's CJOR.

Burns was very popular among his Anglo listening audience as he was vocally and relentlessly anti-separatist during those early days of Quebec nationalist sentiment. This, of course, generated anger among the separatists to the point where a local, sensationalist newspaper recklessly published a front page photo of Burns with a target on his head.

CKGM--understandably concerned about Burns' safety and even possible retaliation against the station itself--ended Burns Hotline talk show and briefly had him host a sports program, to the disappointment of his talk show fans. Burns reportedly lived in one of the upstairs apartments inside the Drummond Street building in which CKGM's studios were located at the time. The building itself has since been demolished and replaced.

In 1969, Burns' CKGM contract ended and he returned to Vancouver where he resumed a talk show and even ran (unsuccessfully) for the Mayor of North Vancouver. Later in his career he hosted a talk show for radio station CKO.

Further details about Pat Burns can be found via Google Search.

To avoid confusion, note that there was another Montrealer named Pat Burns who was the coach of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team.Urban Legendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06082307854399484023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464100720604662734.post-17785943570786789672007-09-07T16:24:00.000-07:002007-09-07T16:24:00.000-07:00Hi Happy I can remember one them after awhile wo...Hi Happy I can remember one them after awhile would say "You're gone doll" or to that effect...first time I ever heard doll used like that until I heard it one night at home when someone called a lady neighbor the old doll next door.Of course I might have picked that one up and used it once or twice when talking about my mother too. Pat Burns' "Hotline" on CJOR radio gave Western Canadians an opportunity to speak of their frustrations with the Canadian system and how it treats us. Burns, who died in 1996, was an outspoken defender of freedom of speech, and freedom generally. He had extraordinary common sense, fearlessness, and a great sense of humour. We hope to have some editorials from the past on this site in the future, but for now, you can get a very small taste of his views with some editorials transcribed here. When we lived in New York I could get CKLW 800 Windsor, Ontario and CHML 900 Hamilton, Ontario on most nights. Growing up I listened to Danny Gallivan broadcast the hockey games on radio. WPTR 1540 Albany used to get a good signal into Montreal at night. Wolfman Jack became famous when he broadcast from a high power Mexican Radio Station that could be heard over most of western Canada and western United States after dark when AM radio signals really travel. I have a new show I like these days. The John and Jeff Radio Show "The Third Shift." You can e mail John and Jeff and they will give you a shout out.
