As you may have noticed recently, I started a new series on former and current Verdunites who have made a name out there in their fields of endeavour.

As you saw, we started with the winningest NHL coach of all time with most Stanley Cups won, but none other than Scotty Bowman. As you read, he clearly remembers his roots and has happy memories of his days here and of course he has played in the Verdun Auditorium many times in the early days.

I have received many calls after the article and there have been some comments on the article sent to the Messenger offices, which can be viewed online, saying it would be an honor and a deserving one to have the Auditorium named after him. One comment said that it would be an INSULT not to have it named after him. I concur. IN fact, I have been wondering why nothing has been done sfter all these years.

A search on Google for articles about Scotty Bowman all mention about where he's from and some sites even show pictures of him in his youth in Verdun and he still keeps in touch with people here.

Yes, There is an arena for Denis Savard, Lasalle has Jaques Lemaire arena, Martin Lapointe in Ville St. Pierre, Bill Durnan and Doug Harvey Arenas in NDG/Cote des neiges, and of course, there are arenas for Howie Morenz and The Rocket. But none for a coach of his stature who knows where he's from and is internationally known in the hockey world.

Needless to say, Mr. Bowman is not getting younger. So what is the Council waiting for..It is time for the Borough council to step up to the plate, or in this case, step on centre ice. See you at Council meeting on April 7th.

<@Rb>Bob Dubois,

Resident of VerdunLes Fhttp://lesf.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.com
