Arawana Club .......Tom Collins mix ?

NoteMay 13, '12 4:11 PM
by robert for everyone
I was looking for a mention of the Ariwana bar on Bridge street as you see I don't know or ever knew how to spell it I just went there. I wonder if anybody would know the recipe for their famous Tom Collins.

While looking I came across two interesting sites:
one about G. Matticks

The other about Montreal :

Hi jumper,. funny you should mention the Arawana Club,.I just listed that club on the Point St Charles site last week in hopes of trying to name 21 bars that were in the Point.
As for the recipe, I will try to find out what it was.......HF&RV - Les

well give us a list and maybe some of us can add to it. And 21 does that include taverns?

Yes mostly taverns. Actually Ken Mc, asked me a while back,it was some sort of game ,to be able to name all 21 taverns in the Point,I can readily visualize quite a few,but can't seem to get all of them.,maybe we can answer all of them .
Arawana Club,Magnan's Tavern, the Capri,Naps Tavern, the Pall Mall, the Fiesta,Ropery St. Tavern, Westlakes, 1&2 club, CNR Tavern, .......and that's where I get stuck, I am sure along Wellington,& some on Centre that I cannot recall names.
Thanks for any help.I would think anyone good with the Lovell's directory could find out all the 'registered names' and where they were.I would think if we used the year 1960 as a starting point ,that would encompass all of them ? HF&RV - Les

Here is a reply from the Point St Charles site, with another name of a tavern: I don't know this one,at least not by name:

Where Are You From Ville Emard (Point)

Comments:
I know of another Tavern called the Moose Tavern at the end of Charon and Hibernia, near the Tunnel, where the tracks are.I think the street beside it was Ryde

I also recall a tavern being referred to as the 'Sports Tavern' but I always thought that it was the PalL Mall ,....were they one & the same. I am thinking of immediately inside the Point border from Verdun on your left hand side as you entered the Point (Butler St & Wellington)

You know I can remember on Ottawa street there was a club corner of NotreDame & Mountain really near Ottawa I think it was, also the All American was on Notre Dame ? corner of ??? but was this in the boundaries of the Point ,I think it may have been still within the borders of the Point. I do remember other taverns as you went along Wellington past Peel ,but then you were in Griffintown.....I sat in the car with a bag of chips and a coke, waiting outside a few of those places around there ..........lol

wasn't the club at the corner of Bridge and Wellington the Oasis my first bar beer was at the corner of Charlevois and Centre I can't remember the name but then there was one on each corner and the one on the other corner became a beanary. I used to go to Magnan's when it was just a skinny little bar.

The Ariwana or Arawana was at Bridge & Wellington,I think the owners were the Pearson Pierson brothers ? but don't quote me on that.
As for Magnan's they use to calculate your bill right on the placemat you had your steak or roast beef on,.just wrote right on it & that was it.
Magnan's was always considered a treat, due to the good food & cold beer.
The tavern at Ropery St, was also known for what they called popsicles ,it was a big frosted mug of draught beer,it was always neat to just stop by there & have a quick one, then back to work, try that now adays...lol

Yeah And we never heard of a tavern going bankrupt.

I saw this map several years ago, on Coolopolis the Gravenor brothers, who if you all remember their Dad once owned Nuns Island in a cool deal,.lol
Another good site to visit is Spacing Montreal, which has interesting story's all te time. so check out this story of theirs from their archives. The map is interesctive ,but really hard to pinpoint certain identifying ballons ,because there were so many, but you will get some names for sure. Maybe if I enlarge the map with Ctrl + the wheel on your mouse, may make it big enough to separate some of those balloons .Good Luck HF&RV - Les

Palomino ,Goldy's names that sound familiar, however Ken already had these in his quest for 21 bars around PTStCharles.it seems to me there was also a tavern near 'beauchamps' grocery store) these were not far from the old Dow Brewery .....I will see what I can do to find out more,& not ones that were renamed over the years,so we avoid duplication. Oh add the'do drop in' on Wellington (this was renamed I think ?)

Now here is an example of what time can do to your memory, It seems that I often remember things being bigger than they actually were,I have visited Montreal many times, & everytime I stop in an old tavern or restaurant ,I am amazed to see how tiny these places really were.(the one exception Magnan;s as it as expanded a lot since the 60's...
But have a look at this shot of the Pall Mall Tavern at the corner of Butler & Wellington (the 1st street in the Point) I remember this building as having been at least twice as long as it appears here,it is quite a short tavern (at least along the Wellington St side...)
