Remember When ? or Which Way to Winter

it seems winter has a paid a visit to our old homeland. Montreal (& most of the country ) has escaped winter this year, but as always it usually makes an appearance.Pressing the snow removal crews into service ,in order to get the streets ready for the Monday morning commute. To our Montreal area friends & members,be careful & drive safe.

MONTREAL – Crews are expected to clear snow on the major streets downtown by Monday morning, but it will take until mid-week to cart away all of the 20 or more centimetres that fell since Friday.

City of Montreal spokesperson Patricia Lowe said crews were already out Sunday in the downtown Ville Marie borough and the plan is to have all major arteries downtown cleared of snow by Monday’s morning commute. The other 18 Montreal boroughs plan to start snow clearing at 7 p.m. Sunday, she said.

At its height the operation will involve 3,000 employees using 2,200 pieces of equipment. After crews clear the snow they then cart it away. That can take 96 hours, or until mid-week, assuming there is no more snow falling in that time period, Lowe said.

Environment Canada meteorologist René Héroux said there should be two to four more centimetres of snow falling on Monday and there is a chance of snow falling again on Wednesday. He added that the snow accumulation since Friday varied between 20 and 25 centimetres, depending on the exact location on the Island of Montreal and because some of it was blowing snow.

The snow removal operations are expected to pose headaches for motorists, and the city is urging people to make use of the 5,700 free parking spaces available to residents from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. during snow loading times (when the orange signs go up on your streets).

Call 311 to find out where the parking spots are or visit the city’s website at ville.montreal.qc.ca/portal/page?_pageid=8397,94617579&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL.

The major snow clearing operation is only the third of the current winter season, which has been notably drier and milder. Usually there are at least five per winter season and an average of 215 centimetres of snow.

Since Nov. 15, the city says 115 centimetres of snow fell on Montreal, or 45 centimetres less than the average for the last 30 years. The smallest snowfall of the past thirty years was in the winter of 1978-79, with 103 centimetres of the white stuff. On the other hand in the winter of 2008-09 a whopping 505.6 centimetres of snow fell.

Have fun & remember Verdun .......... Well I did

My Snowman

Well here proves I am a little nuts but I still have the know how of making a snowman that I learned a long time ago in my yard in Verdun.
After getting home Friday night around 9:00 it was so beautiful that I had the urge to ring my neighbor’s doorbell and ask her to come out and play in the snow. But it was too late so I stayed out and started making my snowman by myself. The snow was like glue and as I rolled my snowball it took no time for it to become a great base for the beginning of my snowman. My second snowball rolled the same and it too became a giant ball so I stopped and tried to lift it on the base but doing so because it was so heavy I dropped it and I knew I had no choice but to pick up the pieces and glue them back together with the sticky snow on the base. I had no trouble rolling the head. By this time I was drenched so I just sat in the snow and admired my work of art. Andre looked out the window and gave me a thumbs up. Guess he wished he had stayed out and joined me in making my snowman. I am not a kid but still the biggest kid at heart. I had so much fun and I was so proud to show it off to my daughter and grandson on Sunday when they came to visit.

I hope you enjoy my lopsided snowman and that you get the chance to create one of your own.

That's fantastic Poly......& much appreciated I thought I was one of the last big kids left, but I suspect most of us Verdun characters are "Still Crazy After All These Years"
Thanks for the craziness, it's what we need occasionally for sure....... Hope your winter isn't too tough though, and just so you know I am with you in spirit, I just walked my guests from our weekly Sunday Dinner(including my 92 yr. old Mom) out to their cars & yes here in Victoria BC...........it is snowing ...........large flakes, almost snowman worthy, but I doubt that it sticks for long.......So Cheers to you kid for making us all remember ,we are never too old to have fun (& remember Verdun)............... - Les

Cool Pauline - did you give him a name? :))

Hi Sandy I’ve been calling her She. You can't really see her base (bottom) too well but she has a great pair of hips and it looks like she has a fifties skirt on. Plus the pink hat, which is a bucket, covered with the pink toque. Although pink is not just for girls anymore. I haven’t really thought of a name. Any suggestions.

lol - reminds me of Sarah Palin's famous "what's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull ?" hmmm - what should her name be?

Ha ha that’s pretty close to her shape but with a long skirt instead of a dress. If I change the broccoli in her mouth for a long red pepper they could pass as sisters. Flaky Lady .She won't win any beauty contest that's for sure but it's what's inside that counts. I would say she is still a Miss Flaky Lady because she is quite frigid.
