Subject: RE: Red Cross Donations...vs Salvation ARmy

You may already be aware of this info, but interesting to read again.

here is something to think about......
As you open your pockets for the next natural disaster or that in Japan, please keep these facts in mind:

The American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans
salary for the year was $651,957 plus expenses

The United Way President Brian Gallagher receives a $375,000 base salary along with numerous expense benefits

UNICEF CEO Caryl M. Stern receives $1,200,000 per year (100k per month) plus all expenses including a ROLLS ROYCE
Less than 5 cents of your donated dollar goes to the cause

The Salvation Army's Commissioner Todd Bassett receives a salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2 billion dollar organization.
96 percent of donated dollars go to the cause.

No further comment is necessary. Please share this with everyone you can

Guy. I had been associated with The Salvation Army for about 50 years. My wife and I were both exstensively involved. She was The Young People's Sgt Major. I was the Sgt Major. You are right about The Sally Ann stretching every dollar the get. Thanks for sending that.

generally before I post any of these emails (supposed gospel truth) I try to check them out through sites that either debunk, the story or corroborate it.
here is one site which compares this recent email,to one back in 2005
Analysis: Regardless whether one feels charity CEOs are overpaid or underpaid, such judgments should at least be based on real facts and figures, not outdated and fictitious declarations like the ones above.

Even a cursory comparison of these two messages, collected five years apart, reveals that much of the information contained in the latter was copied verbatim from the earlier version distributed in 2005 — yet the 2005 version wasn't accurate in first place.

You can read the whole thing here: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_charities_salaries.htm
I guess the old adage should be considered "Don't Believe Everything You Read"

This reminds me of the email a few years back where a bunch of photos taken at Peral Harbour while under attack ,were supposedly taken with an old Kodak Brownie Camera & the film found some 50 or 60 years later & developped, they were supposed to have been taken by a lone sailor who was killed on one of the ships bombed..
Truth was all the photos without exception were taken & commisioned by the Unites States Navy ,to document the attack....
.........................................Hey , while I was typing this I just got another email from another King of Kenya (Geez how many kings are there from there & how'd they get my email........hahahahah) but in anycase as soon as he sends me a few Billion for helping him out I am buying all of you in Verdun Connections a Smoked Meat & beverag of your choice,..If you are as confident as I am aboutme getting this money, then just go down & wait for me at Schwartz's........lol

Ps: Charity begins at home, if everyone helped their family & friends & neighbours in need First,.then alot of Need would be eliminated.

I was about to check out the validity of the charity CEO's paychecks, but you beat me to it Les! Or do I have to check up on you now, to see if you're spreading a new urban legend...life is getting so very complicated on the Internet these days. That said, I do agree that the Salvation Army do a marvelous job within the community with very little going back into the charity. Likewise for the St Vincent de Paul Society here in Australia. I'm not a Catholic, but I support these two organisations over many others that operate here as most others are just too TOP HEAVY with organisers, pen pushers and not enough people that actually roll up there sleeves and get the job done!....Diane

I would also agree with that,

plus I still think if you try to help closer to home, that's the place to start.
