YMCA

Les,

The top photo shows the corner of LaSalle and Senecal where the YMCA was supposedly situated after leaving Gordon street. The address in the Lovell directory specifies 7501 LaSalle, however the build on the corner is 7505. It is a fairly new building and no doubt the Y was demolished. The house to the right has no. 7497 and I spoke to the owner who was outside but he lives there since 2005 so he could not help me. If you can get hold of a photo of the Y at that corner this would help me in my research.

The next 4 photos shows where the Y was situated around 1928 just before moving to their new building on Gordon street. I included an old photo wich confirms that it is the same building showing the second floor local of the Y. As you requested, I took a photo of the address, While I was there, I took a photo of the series of buildings across the street where you lived.

Les,
The "Y" at the 7501 LaSalle was actually 7155 LaSalle Blvd. Just west of the Douglas Hospital.A sand coloured building with the bus stop outside. I spent many "Day Camp" summers there in the 60's. I'm not sure, but I think I also went to the "Gordon Pool" around the same time frame.

The Lovell directory speciifies 7501. However I will check out the 7155 address on my next trip to Verdun.

I think the address might be correct, The building though, is the one across from the 58 bus stop. On Google map. The address of the building that I know to be the YMCA says approx 7155. When I put the cursor over the bus sign it says 7501. If you zoom in on the Top left hand corner of the building on google maps (Streetview) you can see the "YMCA" outline from where the sign was removed. http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

1) Click on the link I have above, 2) Type in 7155 LaSalle Blvd, Verdun. (That will bring you to the building). 3) Zoom in so you see 4 buildings. Two are rectangles, One has a small "L" shape (that is the "YMCA" the fourth has two small extensions. 4) Drag the yellow man from the "Zoom bar" over the building with the "L" shape. As you drag the man you will see a faint green patch where you will be looking at the building from. Put it in front of the building between LaSalle Blvd and the building. 5) When you look at the building, put your arrow where you want to look. a rectangular box will appear if it is higher in the picture. Oval on the ground. You want the rectangle. Put it where you want to zoom in. I zoomed in on the address sign on the lawn and it does say L'ETAPE 7105 BOUL LASALLE. There is a dark spot on the wall of the building where the electrical outlet was. Put the rectangle below it and keep playing with the distances ad you'll see the shadow of YMCA visible. IT is hard to see, but you can make it out.

I think it was a typo in Lovell. LaSalle Boul addresses near Senecal are 7500's, the "Y" address is 7105 according to the sign. (Explains why there was no 7501 at Senecal & LaSalle)

Bill,
Yes I see the 4 buildings. I have zoomed in on the one on the left where there is a driveway and I do see shadowy marks on the wall but my eyes are not good enough to make out the YMCA sign but I think that's the you mentioned. Does that seem right, if so, this is a major find in my research. I will be going to Verdun on thursday and I will check it out. In the meantime, can you tell me if my conclusions are correct.

Yes, I think your conclusions are correct. Regarding the four buildings (closest to the Douglas Hospital) it is the middle left that is the "Y" It used to be called the "Verdun-LaSalle YMCA" when I went there. I just noticed there are street numbers on the Google map. 7085 near te most easterly building and 7175 on the west corner of Leclair. Lines up with 7105 being the third building west of the Douglas Hosp. There is also the patch of earth with a sapling planted where there was a tree cut down that LesF mentioned earlier. Between that and the sign (7105 LaSalle) I am sure your conclusions are correct.

Yes it definitely is. 7105 LaSalle Blvd.

Bill,
You will notice that Google specifies 7155.

Yes, I did notice that, however, it says addresses are approximate. Zooming in on the sign there is no doubt that it says 7105. If you get a chance to drive over you will see the sign. If you can let me know how you saved the picture that you sent to me I can get to an angle on Googlemaps that is very clear and the address sign says 7105.
