I remember shovelling peoples walkways and stairs on Brown Blvd. Use to get 25 cents back in the late 50's. Recall last year, offered teenager to shovel my two car driveway for 20 bucks.....turned it down.....was meeting with friends to "hang out" .....go figure !!

Yikes $20 bucks for a double driveway, whenever we get snow here of any amount I shovel my driveway & deck & walkways & then do the neighbours......all for a wave & a thank you......lol

I love those old photos of Montreal in the winter. I really miss the curved stairways and the knee deep snow. So beautiful. My favorite season in Quebec.

Keith if they ever invent a shovel that you operate with jusy your ywo thumbs, then we'll have it beat,te kids will have the cleanest neighbourhoods on the planet, just need a keyboard and a LCD screen built into the handle so they can tell someone else what they are doing at that moment..........lol

Those type of photos are classic Verdun/Montreal with staircases covered in snow, it immediately transports us back to the old days....nice looking ,but I doubt I'd like to do it all over again.
like the old joke says
"If I had my life to live over-----I'd live over a liquor store".....................Cheers !! HF&RV

I still love those days when we get dumped on especially the first snowfall and every thing gets a blanket of the beautiful white stuff. The beauty of having four seasons in our area. True the snow causes chaos to traffic but it is an industry and employment for many.
The white stuff gave us many hours of great fun during the winter months as a kid and looked forward to it especially around the Christmas Season. I remember wishing it would snow to have snow banks, snow forts, snowball fights, snow angles. We didn’t need computers ipads TV for that matter we had an amusement area just out side our front door. Coming home from playing , clothes soaked feet almost frozen face red as a beet. Best of all we had friends to play outside in the fluffy white stuff. What great memories… Thanks

we sure had fun with any season, but winter was 'cool' (pun intended).....your right the snow forts etc etc snow ball fights,..king of the castle,...and shovelling the local rink off to get some skating in.all good stuff...... HF&RV

And we survive it every year. I must say looks better than the skies on fire and the homes swallowed up in the mud.

Ha Ha ...What kid didn’t get their tongue stuck to something lol . Good stuff

Here's some info from a website about major storms of over the years.
The storm we had in Montreal in 1971:
12 1971 Precipitation: 47 cm of snow, 110 km/h winds map
Montréal, QC / April / The city's worst snowstorm produced huge drifts. Electricity was cut for 2-7 days.

that seems to pale in comparison with the weird once in a 100 year storm we had here in victoria back in 1996 ( a city mind you that had almost no snow removal equipment otherthan some graders with a plow attached ....hahahah (I've got video somewhere of that one)
3 1996 Precipitation: 100 cm of snow map
Southwestern BC / December / An unusually heavy snowfall brought traffic and emergency response service to a standstill in the areas of Victoria, the Fraser Valley, and some parts of Vancouver. Damage estimated at $214 million
Here is the webaddress for the site Public Safety,..lot's of events marked in there including the Ice Storms etc etc

1996 was the first year we went to visit our daughter who had moved to Vancouver because she wanted to get away from politics and snow. She said don't bring winter coats and bots. Ha Ha The palm trees were covered in snow, I had to drive thee cars out of snow banks because they didn't have the skill. One guy wnated me two continue from 12th to 10th a steep hill with no winter tires I told him that was his problem. But I most admit the slush on the street corner was as clear as drinking water not the mess we have. By the way they don't insulate well in Vancouver.

geez..I only recall doing this twice as a youth on the stair railing on 3rd ! I believe it was warm water poured on to separate the tongue? But I think the popped out eyes are the way we looked....

Hey Pony, wasn't it amazing that it was freezing outside back then, and we still wore our jackets opened, no hat,no mits, just to look cool ??? I wonder if the kids still do that today?

M.P. on Egan was stuck so he pulled to get it off and he actually ripped his tongue. I remember flight boots with the tongue unzipped, cool but defeating the purpose. Scratchy britches, itchy long underwear and knitted mittens that often took off with the snowball. On fifth avenue some kid got caught in his snow cave by the snowblower. When we came out of school we could still see parts of the boots in the snow on the truck.Pops at the Egan park above Banantyne ceaning the ice and trying to get heat from that stove.

Hi Cookie Took years to finally learn how to cope with winter and the secret is to dress for it but my vanity will not allow me to wear a hat and get hat head lol.Teen aren't much different , cool is still in.. Are running shoes really warm in the winter?

Sandra penner said...

POny, No, running shoes aren't warm in the winter snow..of course they sell heavy lined ones now don't they for the snow?? I attached those silly looking snowboot guardes on my boots for walking here, only to prevent falling & breaking a hip (WHAT HIPS)...but no matter how silly they look, you can do a mean-tapdance in them on a cement floor!! (smile) It's 12F here today!!!!

I'm with you Pauline....all that fun out on the street having snowball fights, skating to the rink, snowbank forts etc. Always dozens of kids around to play with until you were totally exhausted. Poor kids of today have no idea what childhood is all about!....Diane
