Verdun Record Stores:

Remember going to your favourite record store to either buy a new 45rpm (ask your kids if they know what that means.......lol)   We went to Buckley's , there was also one record store on church Av just up from Wellington too ( I forget the name) also a couple of others in Verdun (Blue Note ?? or something like that) ...but we would also go there even to just get the 'list of the top 40' Remember those......here's one :August 1967 ..................Only 43 years ago.........hahahahaha  that's right ,just yesterday.

                                          -------------------------------------------------------HF&RV---------------------

maybe I'll post some of these playlists every so often, & if anyone wants  to select a song off of the list,we can try to find it & post the song here.....It might bring back some memory prompts from Summers way back when....

Well this seems simple enough "the Verdun Music Center" 612 Church Avenue,......although I don't remember that name or any other for that matter, but this is from an ad in the Montreal Gazette many moons ago: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=opAuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ipkFAAAAIBAJ&dq=music%20in%20verdun&pg=2273%2C2651214

but right beside the Record Store was a Florist Shop owned by Mrs Macklhern (?) her shop supplied the flowers for the Sunday Mass services at Saint Willibrord's Church,..my older brother used to go over to her store to knock off a few rats from time to time....( the 4 legged kind, not some of the patrons.........hahahaha) ....... Mrs. McElheron owned the florist shop on Church Ave. She had a daughter, Diane. I lived above Buckley Music Store, right on the corner of First Ave and Wellington, also above English and Scotch Woollens.

Les F said...

Yes her name was Eileen(or Irene) Mcelheron ( the mom I mean) , she gave my Mom a cane to use & my Mom uses it daily to this day, she is almost 90.& she was a very good friend of Mrs McElheron ,
ps: I spent a lot of time at Buckley's ,.and do you remember the Trick & Joke shop right near there ?
Also down that lane off of Wellington was the Fish Store, and the lane was slightly offset, which jogged around towards Steinberg's parking lot............Thanks for input,...HF&RV
' Mac ' is what they all called her,(Mrs McElheron that is) I can recall a gathering of old ladies every few weeks at our house to play O.K.O ...or bingo , and they would all cackle like little old ladies......hahahahaha They took turns going to each others homes, that's when us kids would get all the baked goods that were left over...the funny thing was all the old gals had names like Myrtle, Bertha, Ev,. etc etc .......

Les F said...

Now that I think of it, the 'old ladies' were probably in their 40's.........hahahahaha HF&RV

Do Re Mi on Wellington there was a guy who worked there..we used to talk all the time..
Richard Huot..he went on to make records in French...
Dutchy in the record cave offered me a job when they moved downtown..
I was too young...he used to get me by asking me a trivia question...
Like he would play the intro to 96 Tears and then ask me who is this......
Always got me with that one....hahahaha

Steve Gladwish said...

Gregory's for the smoked meat across from the fish market.....
Drug store right on the corner of first...
Buckley's would have the records on the wall...ask Mrs. Buckley to play one so we could hear it...
First time I saw Apple records...Hey Jude was out. Mrs. Buckley had it up same day it was out and ranked number one...Green side was A side and the white inside was B side.....

Do-Re-Mi,..Now you would think I would have remembered that one, since I use the term often.
were the Do-Re-Mi letters on a big blue treble cleff sign ?? I have some sort of visual of something like that.....

"Question Mark & the Mysterians" .....that was a good tune, I will find it..great song from that era... thanks for the info: -HF&RV-

Memory is fading! I seem to remember buying my 78's at a shop between 1st and 2nd on the north side of Wellington St., (or was it between 1st and Willibrord? I still have them, stashed away in the bowels of my basement. Can anyone verify this location? This was around 1950. At that time my records were Hank Snow and such. I would have to dig them out to check!

The record store I recall was on Wellington St near 1st avenue ,it was the one I know (or knew) as Buckley's ,at least in the early 60's for certain. That would have been the riverside of Wellington Street (southside as we knew it, though a compass would disagree)...........Thanks for the input Art .Cheers , HF&RV

Hey Les, I just found an LP by "Bob Davies" titled Live at The Longhorn Inn ,Sharon,Ontario..songs are Ramblin' rose, taht'll be the day,etc....sure wish I had a record player to listen to this LP once again. I was friends with Bob Davies next door neighbor "Arlene " and tried to locate Arlene on facebook, but don't know her last name now...too bad.

Hi Cookie,....is this the same Bob Davies ?

I think the "memory box" may have just kicked in. I am now quite sure there was a music store with the name "Archambault" on Wellington on the North side between first and Willibrord. I believe they sold musical instruments as well!

Les F said...

Maybe we could look up that block of Wellington Street in a Lovell's Directory, and see what business names appear ? Did you say 1940ish Art ?

Let's make that LATE 1940ish early 50ish!!

Les F said...

Ok Thanks Art, now we'll see if we can locate some info.......... Cheers !! HF&RV

Art Dawe said...

Les,
That's quite a history there, but no mention of Verdun!!! Was this from the Lovell's Directory? I have no recollection whatsoever of the Montreal locations mentioned as I never went to that end of "town" back then.
I don't know much about Lovell's Directory. Do you look up by Company name, or is there a section where you can look up a street name and address, and see what occupied the premises in the forties?
Just having the name Archambault pop into my head trying to think of where a music store was seems to be too much of a coincidence considering I never knew of the Montreal location!!! That makes me more sure that there was such a store in Verdun.
Thanks for the effort Les. Now it is a real mystery to me!

Les F said...

No Art, this was only a first shot at looking up Archambault Music, I was hoping to see Verdun mentioned in there. I tried a Lovell's search, but with no success yet,However I will look for more info, as you have my interest peaked,as to the music store's name. There are other members here ,who I know are better at Lovell searchs than I am, so maybe someone will jump into the rescue us...........hahahah
I will keep searching for now. ------HF&RV----------

how's this Art , two seconds after I posted the previous message , I did another random search through archived Gazette Headllines ,.and came up with this article about two guys being nabbed by the Verdun Police for trying to break into a Verdun Music Store at 4433 Wellington which is certainly the 'north side as you mentioned, I will post a link to the Google Maps showing that locale on Welllington:
but first click on this link to read this Gazette story from 1940:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=uCwrAAAAIBAJ&sjid=AZkFAAAAIBAJ&dq=music%20store%20in%20verdun&pg=4581%2C1777753
..................Art it lloks like the store was btwn: Rielle & Willibrord on the North Side, so if this is the one , then you were close, but one block away..........
Here's the map link. which you can also click on the word 'more' and then click on 'street view' which will give you a modern day shot of that part of Wellington Street,.you can also move the cursor around and go for a tour of Verdun if you like:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=4433+wellington+street+verdun+quebec&sll=49.385949,6.289673&sspn=0.527426,1.145325&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=4433+Rue+Wellington,+Verdun,+Communaut%C3%A9-Urbaine-de-Montr%C3%A9al,+Qu%C3%A9bec+H4G+1W6,+Canada&z=15

Wasn't Archambeault the name of the ladies clothing store at the corner of Egan and Verdun where the Bingo restaurant now sits. Maybe that is why the name seems familiar

Les F said...

I don't remember that, and the Bingo place wasn't around when I lived back there. I do remember there was an Archambault Prison wasn't there? (not in Verdun of course, and I don't rmemeber it from the inside looking out.............lol) ---------------HF&RV--------

Art Dawe said...

Something else about the area where the Archambault music store was. Almost directly across the street was the exit/entrance of the lane that ran between Willibrord and First Ave. from Wellington St. to Lasalle Blvd. It was the only lane (north/south) that was accessile directly from Wellington St. All other lanes were accessible only from the streets they serviced.ie., east/west.....eg.,1st Ave. west side shared a lane with Second Ave., East side, etc., etc., ....And,............. at the corner of that lane on Wellington there was "Standards Fish and Chip shop. (Not sure of the name spelling! But, they had the best fish and chips around!) Of course, your fish and chips were wrapped in newspaper for take-outs! Dem were de good ol' days!

Les F said...

I know the fish shop well, also right beside that perpendicular lane (one of two in Verdun, off main drags) was Gregory's Restauarant ,smoked meat specials etc etc ,...
However I almost have to think that finding evidence of another record store in Verdun ,on Wellington via that Police report in the GAzette & finding (so far at least ) no other record stores listed, would sort of indicate one block east of the one you remember makes sense, but as I say it's the only other store we've found definite referance to on Wellington.is the one in the Gazette story.
I still think ,someone might have success finding a store's address through Lovell's Directory......Hopefully someone can locate that info. Let's keep trying. -HF&RV-

I don't know if we found info on Archambault's yet, but I came across this very old post from a very old thread.

Oldest memories May 21, '04 7:26 PM
by youngward2 for everyone

O.K.--my oldest memories of Verdun (I'm 58).
1. The music store (Bluenote?) on the corner of Second and Wellington had a t.v. in the window and I saw the coronation of Queen Elizabeth on it. First t.v. program I ever saw.
2. There was a dry cleaner on Wellington next to the music store that had the pants presser in the window. I used to stop and watch the man pressing pants (we were poor so I couldn't afford any other entertainment. ha!)
3. We used to wait for the #58 streetcar at the corner of Wellinton and First. If it was raining we'd wait in the entrance of Buckley's. George Buckley's son George Jr. (aka Sonny) started a burglar alarm manufacturing business, and my father, brother and I worked part-time for him making printed circuit boards one summer.
4. Laurendeau's store on Second Ave, halfway between LaSalle and Wellington had bread delivered by horse and wagon. I remember watching Mr. Laurendeau "picking up" after the horse in the summer to use the manure on his garden. (more cheap entertainment!)
5. Inter-City Bakery stabled its horses in a big brick barn between Gordon and Rielle, just below Bannantyne. We'd walk through the barns on the way home from Bannantyne school, and pet the horses, until they chased us out.
This trigger any memories for anyone?

The florist shop was owned by Mrs Alice McElheron. She is a distant realtive. She was married to my grandfathers brother Thomas Austin. I would love to get in touch with her daughter Diane. I have found very little on Alice and nothing on Diane and ancestry. Does anyone out there know anything about Diane McElheron??
