You know , with all due respect I've heard about this guy Paul Reid for many years,(mostly from the Verdun Connections site on the old MSN) & his wonderful Christmas Stories etc etc, but to be honest I never remembered hearing this guy relay his xmas Stories & when I did hear him & I thought that he was the most depressing voice (as well as his stories, that I'dever heard.....) I couldn't imagine enjoying Christmas because of Paul Reids stories,...I would more be apt to think that razor blade sales would be way up after hearing him......
Just My Opinion.............but for those who like him great,...enjoy: but Remember there is probably a suicide hotline in your town too.............hahahahhaha hf&rv

Les - you are so funny - I've always thought the same thing but didn't dare say it - because I thought it must be me who was the weird one. I'm glad to hear that I'm not crazy - I feel much better now - well off to beddie byes - more fun and games tomorrow - and it's Friday - yay. Bon soir to all you introverts out there - lol

To each his own. His Christmas Classic is still the most requested program.

Thankfully most people receive help, before it's too late....................
and most people Never had to Hear this supposed Christmas Stuff, before they got their presents...........The old Brewery Mission was more happy than this, mainly cause they couldn't afford a radio to hear this drivel hf&rv

........and Can you reveal a source that claims that this is the most requested anything...................................or is this just a thought

Does he really scare you that much??? I thought you were tougher than that.

Does any one else like Paul Reid ????
I can't be the only one that likes him plus I've never made a request to a radio station for any program so others must have requested his Christmas program

just kidding ................
one of 16 kids & the best he can muster is the boring monotone ,I would wonder when he was going to 'Set Fire to the House' ..........this guy's voice is dead boring......... but I do understand that many may appreciate his attempt to lull everyone to sleep............then steal everything in the house........hahahahha Just Kidding Poly ,..........I'm sure there 's more than just one listener, Although CJAD I think is on life support anyway....................................hahahahha HF&RV

How is it possible to comment on the stories made popular in the '50s and '60s and have them still make the same impact in 2016 - you weren't even born yet, I had only just been born and it was already old news by the time The Waltons started in 1970, almost 20 years later. Take anybody from the depression era and flash forward them to today and they'd run screaming off a building ledge having to re-live years of want. Reid was born 3 years before the depression in 1927 - 90 years ago.

That's what this is about, the memories of a man who died 35 years ago talking about his years as a child which would have not been far off the depression years either, almost 100 years ago now.

It's history and the history that caught on a very long time ago and because at 60 I remember hearing my mother who would be over 80 today listening to that back 50 years ago or for proper perspective the 60's. so they're not even from the last 50 years, but not far from 100 years ago. You can't possibly relate to something someone speaks about from the depression era in the first person perspective. I only decided to tape in 1975 in case it disappeared and that's 40 years ago already, long before most of you were born or if you're hacking away at this.

In 40 years what will you recall as fun and memorial? Then fine, it'll arrive soon enough, but we'll be dead and gone and that's how history goes.

His talent was his deep resonant voice which is what was popular then because radio was or had been the main form of entertainment as TV only came in after radio was well-established and Lowell Thomas hosted the first-ever news broadcast on television in 1940, 10 years after the depression, so Reid died only 43 years after that at 57, so put it into perspective, I'm older than he was when he died, it belongs to a different generation a different era and just as TV was showing up, so the delivery of voice in radio was and remained the popular form of entertainment for a long time. What do you want to do, wipe out anything that originated before 1960?

I guess you surfed by looking for Paul Reid Christmas stories, I think some of the links posted here still work, so give them a try.
We actually posted these around 1999 or so, so comments are all dated considerably.
Most of us based on your time line mentioned are likely older than you, so I'm sure we were all familiar with Paul Reid and his stories. They certainly were monotone and IMHO not the least bit Christmas like to me. but I should ask my Mom if she remembers him as she would have listened to CJAD in those days when she lived in Verdun....btw she is 96 and so far has pretty good recall so maybe I will ask her if she would like to listen to his stories again. I wonder if CJAD still plays them each year.I will look that up. Thanks for surfing by and giving us some history .Cheers !
Merry Christmas

He meant a lot to many Quebecers in those difficult times. It's hard to explain if you were not around in those times.
