I will be purchasing the book by Adrienne Clarkson on Norman Bethune as he was involved with a clinic at the YMCA in Verdun in the 30s and this information would be a great addition to the SHGV archives..

Guy , I would also you suggest this Library in Verdunpurchase this book,.I have suggested many different books for our local Library system to purchase & surprisngly quite a few they agreed to purchase. So no harm in filling out a 'Request Form' supply all the pertinetnt information & you usually will be the first person contacted to read it.....The Library's are a fantastic system....Give it a try, even if you purchase the book for yourself, there's no harm in suggesting or requesting that the Library itself purchase a copy that many others might appreciate too....... Just a Thought ............HF&RV

Les,
Sounds great, I will give it a try. Dr Norman Bethune is a true Canadian Hero and following his footsteps in the Montreal region is a real fascination. The Montreal YMCA has promissed to get back to me on his involvement with a clinic at the Verdun Y on saturdays for the Verdun needy during the depression wich he held free in Verdun in the 30s.
Adding a photo to the reply section is starting to sink in.

These are one the surgical instruments developed and used by Dr Norman Bethune wich is on display at the Sacré Coeur Hospital in Cartierville while he was chief surgeon in the early 30s. These instruments are on display in the hospital librairie.
I had the type of operation that Dr Bethune pioneered in the early fifties at the Royal Edward Hospital on St Urbain st. near Pine and no doubt the same type of instruments were used, thus my special interest in the subject.

Pauline,
I just viewed the NFB film on Dr Norman Bethune wich confirms his presence at the YMCA on Gordon st. in the thirties. Every Canadian should view this film at least once in their lifetime to appreciate the greatness of this great humanitarian. I have opened Album no, 49 on my site and will be adding more interesting photos and events on Dr Bethune as they turn up.
Thanks for posting the film.

Guy, I'd heard the name before, but really didn't know anything about Dr Norman Bethune. I'll start educating myself on this famous Canadian. Another great surgeon was Dr Wilder Penfield from Montreal. When I was 6 months old I contracted meningitis and apparently he was my doctor. Mom always said he saved my life. If there are any articles or videos out there on Penfield, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know....Thanks, Diane

Ahhh, Pauline. I've just started downloading your video on Dr. Norman Bethune and it's fantastic.
Where do you find such treasures? I also assume that is Dr. Wilder Penfield talking about Dr. Bethune....great stuff! I'm off now to download the rest of it and thanks heaps....Diane

Pauline, Wilder Penfield got his Companion of the Canadian Order on Nov 24th, my birthday. I was 23 when he was honoured and I sure wouldn't have celebrated my 23rd birthday on that day without him!....Diane
