Movies in Parks (we've come full circle)

Many of you mentioned over the years that Movies were shown in some of Verdun's Parks, well it looks like we've come full circle, as Verdun has decided to show movies in the parks again.Sound like a good community thing to do:

here's the article from the Verdun Messanger:

Movies in the Park returns to Verdun Movies in the Park returns to Verdun

Verdun School News is delighted to announce that in association with the Borough of Verdun that “Movies in the Park” will be returning to Verdun after an 8-year absence on Wednesday, July 22nd.

These summer movies are sponsored by the great folks at Virgin Radio/CHOM/CJAD, who mention that they are also delighted to be back here in the southwest, to show a family flick on the big screen on the waterfront under the stars in an evening for the whole community.

The location is, of course, on the boardwalk, in the area just west of the Natatorium with the screen facing in the direction of de l’Eglise. The stations will be bringing along all those favorite snacks, like ice cream, cold drinks, and the ever popular hot dogs on the grill and the usual surprises.

So stay tuned to the above mentioned stations and keep looking in these pages for more details as we get closer, and get your folding chairs ready and see you on July 22nd on the waterfront under the stars.

I think it might be fun to spend an evening on a hot summer Verdun Night by the river, eating some hotdogs & seeing the people gathering for a movie: (I don't eat a lot of hotdogs these days, but when visiting Verdun/Montreal,an exception must be made....lol)

doesn't look like an ongoing thing, but for those of you who live around Montreal ( Verdun) you can catch the next movie in Verdun on the 22nd of July,............Have Fun ,if you go, HF&RV

Reminds me when I was a kid we used to see movies at Woodland Park and I believe was a park at the corner of Bannantyne and Dupuis, SW corner. I don't think it was the Brown Stadium wich was on the other side of the street at the corner of Bannantyne and Hickson, NE corner. There were probably others in Verdun but these are the 2 that I can remember. Of course we preferred the Western movies. It's a long time ago.

See you on the waterfront under the stars with the mosquitoes so don't forget the OFF or what ever works to keep them away.

Diane Roberts said...

Sounds like a great idea! I don't remember any outdoor movies in Verdun during my days there.
The Lester's Hot Dogs just add to the eveningss, wish I could join everyone. I make hot dogs here for my Aussie friends...after much hunting around, I've discovered one very hard to find brand of weiner which tastes just like Montreal hot dogs. I toast the buns, spread out the French's Mustard, relish, chopped onions etc. and my pals think they're in heaven! Australians idea of a hot dog is a sausage in a cold bun with ketchup!...Diane

I remember visiting Verdun and walking down 5th Avenue and stopping at the little dep near Lasalle to get an Orange Crush. We then went up onto the boardwalk to drink them and were immediately surrounded by yellow jackets. I hope the movie people have better luck. I once heard of someone who took a swig out of a soft drink and ended up with one of those things in his mouth - well you know the rest. It's best to always keep the hole covered - yep

pauline garneau said...

The orange crush in the brown bottle. That had to be the best orange drink going. The orange drink of the 1950's vintage.Too bad they don't make it anymore. What a pity.Pauline

Les F said...

Don't they make Orange Crush anymore?

Sandy Walsh said...

Hmmm - don't know about that. The stuff I was talking about though was Nesbitt's in a clear tallish bottle with black writing. Had to stick your hand into a big fridgey thing filled with various drinks and ice water. Then wipe off the bottle with a rag that hung on the side of the machine - was that sanitary btw - and then open it with a bottle opener that was also part of the machine - pop in a straw - and maybe a bag of chips. In the good old days, I would be able to post a picture right here.

the old orange crush bottle
I forgot about the old fridge full of water.
No twist top back then.
Do you remember Lime Rickey, KIK cola ,Nectar?
Andre remembers Jumbo but I think that was before my time.
Now they are all just a memory but they were really good.

Les F said...

Yup , I loved Lime Rickey & haven't ever seen it out here.
Nectar was good once in a while too, & the old white cream soda, orange crush was a once in awhile soft drink too..KiK was a choice because it was good & it was cheap

pauline garneau said...

Funny how a soft drink would spark a memory but in our house Monday was wash day and a treat was ham sandwiches with mustard and my mother would send us to the corner store for a bottle of orange crush because she would never serve anything with mustard with a glass of milk. That was a big treat. We weren't hard to please.Pauline

Diane Roberts said...

KIK Cola was my favourite drink and Laurentide Potato Chips on the side just made my day! I don't remember the yellow jackets, but I sure do remember the shadflys...swallowed a few of those! Do they still invade Verdun annually?...Diane

Sandy Walsh said...

Pauline - today is Monday - are you doing the wash? But, more importantly, why not milk with mustard? Did you know why your Mom didn't do that?

pauline garneau said...

I don't have a schedule for anything and I don't plan in advance for anything .I need 20 minutes to puff and fluff and I'm off. Do you plan ahead?
My mother said that mustard and ketchup and orange juice just didn't mix and that it would turn sour in your stomach.I didn't argue with her because I hated milk. Mother knew best. Did your mother have any odd ways? Pauline

Sandy Walsh said...

Pauline - I do plan ahead for most things - but definitely not housework. I like not to think about that at all. I had a ham sandwich with mustard for lunch today - and milk - but I don't think I could have it with orange juice. I drink OJ every morning but all by itself and then I get into a nice cup of coffee. Did my mother have any odd ways? Probably. I once saw her climb up the pole in the lane to put the pulley back on - lol. You know I'm kidding - I hope :)

Diane Roberts said...

I'd also like to know whay no mustard with milk? I eat ham sandwiches with French's mustard a couple of times a week and always have a big glass of cold milk with it...maybe I've been poisoning myself all these years!...Diane

pauline garneau said...

Kik was Andre’s favorite too. He delivered groceries to buy a bottle of KiK and a bag of chips.
I guess it was the vinegar in the condiments that when mixed with the milk would turn sour. I don’t really know .Just another question that was never asked.
Maybe someone else’s mother did the same thing?????

Mothers climbing Poles????- Who else would have? - Other than Les  I don’t remember my father climbing the pole he would have been at work during the day. Maybe you really saw her having a break from her routine. There were four kids and two adults in my family so that line was very important...it had to keep rolling because there was always another load to be hung.

Les F said...

Yup 6 kids in Our family so your right the clothesline was in business often......Remember the clothes pin bag that hung on the wall.......lol My sisters or Mother usually brought in the laundry,.but I recall being pressed into service if it wasa about to rain or something & the odd time reeling in the 'frozen' stuff to get to a pair of Jeans or something...........hahahahaha HF&RV

Diane Roberts said...

Sandy...here's my Mom's strange ways. I was never allowed to wear green because it was bad luck! (been wearing it for years now and life's good..."sorry about that Mom"). Had to have a perfectly clean & tidy house before leaving home, just in case you died and people thought you weren't clean. Must admit, you won here Mom...my friends call me obsessive compulsive about cleaning the house, but I don't care because it makes me happy! "Looking down from heaven Mom, I'd make you proud!"...Diane

Tuesday we were at La Belle Province for lunch with my family from New Jersey and my granddaughters ordered a chocolate milk with their smoke meat with mustard and fries. My daughter in law didn't object so I keep my mouth shut. Mother knows best. They drank their chocolate milk and they were fine.Wednesday we went to LaRounde and nine o çlock at night we ended up at Barbies another good place for smoke meat.We all had smoke meat again.Tonight it most likely will be BBQ from Chalet. I heard the Chicken place in Laprairie is still Closed although that place closes for three weeks in July for holidays.

Sandy Walsh said...

omg - lol - this thread has gone "off topic" - which is regarded as a mortal sin on some sites. It started off with the movies on the boardwalk - and progressed to chocolate milk with smoked meat sandwiches. Diane - I know a lot of people who love housework - me personally, I'd rather be doing the income tax - but I do manage to keep it respectable because I am a neatnic and like everything where it should be. Frozen undies hanging on the line - we all can relate to that - it's something we all have in common here. Pauline - did the kids compare La Ronde to Six Flags in Jackson Heights which is in their back yard? We spent a lot of fun times at Six Flags - if you bring an empty Coke can, you get in - two for the price of one. I used to love egg and onion sandwiches with chocolate milk - either from the milkman or homemade with Quik or Jiffy :)

Diane Roberts said...

Oh be quiet Pauline...I'm drooling all over the keyboard! I wonder if Richard can bring me back a smoked meat sandwich from Montreal?...Diane

Les F said...

Hi Di, get Richard to go to Quebec Smoke Meat on Centre (Center ) street in the Point & there he can buy great smoked meat & they will slice it properly for you & seal them in vaacum packed packages, great . I happen to have a small pack in the fridge right now just brought back from Montreal last week,a snack for maybe this weekend ,one of my sisters makes us bread each week for our Sunday Dinner, and she said she will make me a loaf of Rye Bread,to go with the Smoked Meat.
I will press the steamer into action and have some genuine Montreal Smoked Meat ,a perfect quick snack ...I might even have a beer with it......lol (wouldn't want to have milk & have it turn on me.......hahahahaha Supposed to be temps here in the 30's this weekend (hot for SVI ,southern vancouver isalnd, mid Island to rise to high 30's....) Enjoy your snack this weekend and think of poor me! I can almost taste it. Noticed you wrote Centre St (Center). Just reminded me that here in Oz we spell alot of words the French way. Centre, Theatre, programme, foyer, etc. Took me all this time to notice....duh!...Diane

pauline garneau said...

So we don't commit any Mortal Sin and we keep to the subject movie in the park was July 22nd Verdun/Lasalle New in town - we have been having so much rain I hope they had a break from the rain to enjoy the movie. Wish we could send it to you out West –sounds like you need it.
LaRonde was a Six Flags Park up until last year- they went bankrupt and now the city has taken it over again.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124489639859012503.html

I have lightened up my house and got rid of all my clutter carpets dark furniture and have made it old age proof so routine cleaning is a breeze – things like windows well - I like cleaning for the work out.

Diane smoke meat isn’t all it’s made out to be –it’s just because you can’t bite into a really big pile of smoke meat (on rye bread covered with mustard and you mouth has to open so wide to take a bite and then it falls from the bread onto your plate and you have to start to eat it with your fork and then when you go to pick it up again the bread falls apart from the juice of the meat) when you want one. You just saved yourself five pounds from not loading up on that wonderful stuff.

pauline garneau said...

Back to the poles - how do they get to the top of a pole for the third floor?
Where do they get the poles that long????
You can't call Bell to report your clothes line is out or order.

Diane Roberts said...

After they finally started up the Movies in the Park, don't tell me Pauline, that you didn't attend!
I suspect you didn't go because you had a bad case of indigestion from too much smoked meat, dill pickles, BBQ chicken, coleslaw, french fries and who knows what else you managed to feast on the last few days. Serves you right and I hope you're burping from the beer too!...Diane

Guy Billard said...

I discovered that "La Belle Province" has very good smoked meat. I ocasionally go with my wife and I order 1 Smoked Meat Platter wich costs $8.95, then ask the cook to give me 2 plates so that I can share it with my wife. I am served 2 smoked meat platters for the price of one complete with cold slaw and pickles and you should see the amount of fries I get, unbielevable. Not only that, I sometimes have enough left over to bring home for a midnight snack. I put the 2 plastic plates, one on top of the other and voilà. How's that for a deal. Next time I must remember to bring my camera. This is the La Belle Province at the West Island Mall and this may not be done at all their restaurants.
Guy

Diane Roberts said...

Guy, are you going to start teasing me too! Everyone knows that I have to wait 2-3 years between smoked meat sandwiches until my next visit to La Belle Province and I absolutely love the stuff! I think we'll all have to have a get together for a smoked meat lunch next time I'm in town, maybe even at Movies in the Park. Then you, Pauline, me and anyone else that wants to join us in indulging in the culinary delights of Quebec...and if KIK Cola is still out there, please find me a bottle. Diane

Great little video Pauline - it made me thirsty. We used to get the spruce beer floats - they called them ski-doos - at a little kiosk in Dominion Square diagonally across from Windsor Station. They were great. That poutine looks okay too - I've had it once - and it was pretty good.

Diane Roberts said...

Les, the latest they're talking about here is camel meat! We have millions of wild camels roaming around the Outback and they expect the numbers to double in the next ten years....someone has worked out it would be a billion dollar meat industry right now! Maybe I should buy a shotgun, what do you think? Always liked the old movie Annie Oakley with Doris Day.

Diane Roberts said...

Pauline, thanks for all these videos, especially the last one that shows the St Laurent Deli. Would you believe we always ate smoked meat there with my sister Shirley, who lived just around the corner. Shirley practically lived at the deli and the last time we had smoked meat together I took a photo with the St Laurent Deli sign in the background. It has pride of place up on my fridge! That was about five years ago, just months before she suddenly passed away. We had lots of fun times there over the years on my visits and the owners were great.... always gave me couple of potato knishes on my way out the door (just what I needed!). They insisted because I was Shirl's sister from Australia! Great memories. Thanks...Diane

pauline garneau said...

You go girl. You gitcha one of them shotguns or bow and arrow and go hunt them there Outback camels and become the Sarah Palin of Australia. You can git yourself a Smokin Tex just like Luke in this video and you’re in business. He can teach ya everything you need to know to smoke fresh game.

Les- smoked camel betcha it tastes just like chicken too.
Maybe we can all invest in your new venture.

Hey! My Dad smoked Camels when we visited the US on vacation or Plattsburgh/Burlington "smugglin'" trip.................Oh! wrong camel stuff.

Diane Roberts said...

Yeap....wrong camel! I remember those smuggling trips, my sister got caught wearing three skirts and several tops trying to get back into Quebec...my brother-in-law emptied his cigarette carton, stashing the packs under seats, tossed out the carton while driving not knowing it was caught in the door! Big mistake! Both strip searched...and I mean strip searched at the border.....Diane

David Flood said...

The border patrol was much more strict and obnoxious returning rather then entering the US (Except for fruits and vegies). They also could tell by smell what cigarettes you were smoking and guilty looking people. They also had a habit of questioning the kids who were poorer at lieing. I think they got their jollies catching the 25 dollar smugglers.. However it was fun to play the game with them especially with the 48 return rules.

Diane Roberts said...

Your right David, I remember the American border guards were always friendly and questioned you in an easy going manner. The return to La Belle Province was a different story. Stony faces guards that made you feel that you were doing something wrong, asking questions in a gruff voice....not exactly welcoming!....Diane P.S. Hope things have changed!
