...Must be some magic in those old Hardwood Charcoals,.........it sure was good stuff,
I make do with Swiss Chalet,at times or BBQ my own at home,.....but Montreal had it right...

Whenever I am in Montreal, I am their best customer. On a 7 day trip, I will be there at least 5 times. Sometimes at lunch, or late night. Nothing like it where I am. After my third visit, they remember me.

However, in my youthful days, I would frequent the one that was on St. Catherine, near Guy. It was much closer to the, ahem, clubs....

pauline garneau said...

Well you guys maybe I'll go there tomorrow and picking off the menu I'll have 1/4 leg with fries
2 sauce and coleslaw.Sounds good to me.Pauline

I'll have the repas poitrine, carrot cake and do they serve wine?

St. Hubert BBQ on Dominion Square across from the Sun Life Building - lots of lunches in there

I'm jealous. They don't have anything like the chicken in Montreal out here in Winnipeg and they don't know what smoked meat is. Brian

Hi Brian Sandywest above went to school with Bob's wife Diane and Sandy ,Brian went to school with
my brother Bob. Do you get it. Pauline

pauline garneau said...

Sandy of all the times I've been there I don't know if they have wine.My mother and father moved to NDG and the Chalet delivery was there very ofter. Now our place for chicken is on the south shore .Same kind of place where the waitresses slide on the grease on the floor to your table,

pauline garneau said...

Brian Bob and Diane would actually drive from Georgetown (its about an hour passed Toronto)to go have smoke meat at Chenoy's and drive back with their bellies full and a couple of pounds of smoke meat to take back with them.

I remember it well ,the Stagecoach on Decarie not far from JeanTalon , it was also known as "LaDilegence" my friend father used to sing there, Quido Pucci , so did his sons Michael & Gerry, played in his band there,,,
It was a cool little place,.....
the other spot well known on Decarie was "Ruby Foos"
I used to go to a lot of places around there both during the day & sometimes at night,(cause I used to work at Gestetner Duplicators on Pare St, ( 1 street N of Jean Talon)
Thanks for the memory prompt : HF&RV

Does any one remember Norel meat wholesalers on Mill street in the Point. They sold slabs of smoke meat, my father would come home with a slab and steam the whole thing in a double boiler. Talk about pigging out. Maybe that's why I can take it or leave it.

Pauline my last name is Gearey.I can understand why Bob and Diane would drive that far for the smoked meat. unfortunately Winnipeg is a considerable longer drive.Someone mentioned Boston cream pie,now my wife is hungry for some. I've been told we should go to montreal in september.there goes the diet. Brian

For many years driving up Laurentian boulevard passing Canadair to go to lake McDonald you would drive past Dagwood's. For many years it stood empty like a monument to the old days. To tell the truth I've never stepped in there either. But now I see at the Dorval center a Dagwood's sandwich store that is part of a chain. I wonder if there is a relation between the two.

Another late night eatery not of great fame and probably not of great restaurant reviews. The food of dubious nature(maybe pidgeons was the rumour), This was the little chinese restaurant on Guy just under Rockhead's Paradise and in front of Harlem's Paradise. Many nights we staggered from Harlem's across the street to dine of this fine cuisine. Bars in that area were the All American Grill,
Pete's hideaway and another one that I can't remember the name but I think the owner was an ex wrestler by the name of Arturo something like that a huge guy with a tiny head. If someone remembers please let me know.

Brian...you poor man! When did you last have a delicious smoked meat sandwich? Contact Lester's Deli Montreal (Google it) over the internet and they'll arrange to ship you some with other goodies. I sent a slab of smoked meat to my nephew in Philidelphia on his birthday, along with a couple of loaves of rye bread, coleslaw, pickles, box of May Wests and a Montreal Gazette! He thought he'd arrived in heaven!...Diane P.S. I ordered from Australia so Winnipeg will be a cinch!

Diane's right Brian, we posted this link on the old MSN site, and so here you go again, this is the opening page,of Lester's Deli http://www.lestersdeli.com/
When you open the first page 'click enter (of course) and the second page shows a lot of stuff ,including how to order out of town: http://www.lestersdeli.com/frameset.htm

there's also a few ads & sound nytes on there too one from Jackie Mason (remember him ,he was always on Ed Sullivan .blah blah blah .................. HF&RV

Diane and Les thanks for the info. Its been awhile since I had a great smoked meat' The closest I've come is the Dunn's pouches they have at Costco. Not the same as the real thing. we are going east to Montreal in September and if we can't wait that long we will definitely be ordering from Lester's.
Pauline Is there an italian restaurant in Plattsburgh called Arnies?Just wondering if it is still there.Had some great meals there years ago. Brian

Les F said...

Brian , one answer YES Arnie's is still in Plattsburgh ( I have to admit I didn't know this one , & I've eaten Pizza in a lot of places , I will Remember this) http://www.yelp.com/biz/arnies-restaurant-plattsburgh
and as for Smoked Meat, when your in Montreal , of course go to whichever one you believe to be te best ,.but when your leaving ,go down to the Point on Center Street 1889 Center , and you will see Quebec Smoked Meat, regardless of what people will tell you, this place supplied most restaurants around Montreal for many years, the days of pickling & spicing on premises are extremely rare, with perhaps the exception being Scwartz's ........but I'm certain you will not be disappointed, as they will slice this properly & provide it to you in vaccumm packed bags etc etc ..check it out ,if you like , I think things are still the same there... good Luck have a good trip & take pictures for the rest of us.......lol http://www.yellowpages.ca/bus/Quebec/Montreal/Quebec-Smoked-Meat/3293297.html?adid=00410600

Hi Brian, Do you live in WInnipeg?? On Main & St.Johns street downtown there is a Deli called "OSCARS" and they had (oh, I hate to say this) better smoked meat sandwiches than any place I have eaten in Montreal..I know, I know, I couldn't believe it myself, after bragging about the famous smoked meat places in Mtl. for years and then experienced Oscars in Winnipeg..now that was back in 1982.....not sure if it still exists....but worth checking it out if you live in Winterpeg??

Brian Gearey said...

Cookie yes I live in Winnipeg and I know of Oscar's and I agree with you they had great pastrami sandwiches another word for smoked meat in Winnipeg.Unfortunately they closed quite a few years ago. There was another restaurant called Nibblers nosh. They had smoked meat but only lasted a few years. It seems as Winnipegers prefer corned beef and when you mention smoked meat,if they haven't been to Montreal they don't know what you are talking about. They say you mean you eat it hot? Brian

Brian Gearey said...

Les Thanks for the info on Arnies and the smoked meat on centre street. My wife and I will certainly visit both locations.I am looking forward to see how much my little Italian restaurant has changed.I hope the food remains as good as I remember. Will take lot of pictures and post them.Looking forward to September.Brian

pauline garneau said...

Hi Brian I just got back from Plattsburgh,it's our Friday outing Plattsburgh or Burlington or both.I haven't been to Arnies for a couple of years but it use to be an excellent restaurant.Maybe next week we'll give it a try.Today we went to ninety nine and I had prime rib Andre likes the sirloin tips smothered with onions peppers and mushrooms and they were both excellent. If you are familiar with Plattsburgh Butcher Block and Gus' Red Hots still exist.Butcher Blocks lunch menu with the soup and their salad bar is very good. The new Chinese restaurant Jade is very good and inexpensive.Tia Juana Jail for Mexican is gone. There's another restaurant for Italian Micky's is still around but I can't give it a review because we haven't been there for a few years but it use to be excellent.Tell me which ones you are interested in and I will make it a point to give them a try before September.I'll be the restaurant critic for Plattsburgh and if you are interested on the Vermont side Long Hornes in Williston is also Excellent.Pauline

Les F said...

Hi Pauline ,sounds like you get around that area quite a bit, that was one of the great things about living in the montreal area, you can hop in the car & go in any direction & find some good places to visit. Gus's red hots ,very famous spot in Plattsburg, I had posted an article about Gus's on the old site & I still have it some photo's somehwere around here, I'll dig them out & post them again (if I Remember).... Butcher's Block , I think one of our members used to go there or we apoke of it at one time (again on the old site) it too sounds like a good restaurant:
Tell me you mention Burlington, when I was a kid my oldman would take us all to either StAlbans Beach VT. and also to the 'Factory Outlet' in Burlington, it was an old factory like building , that sold everything you could think of cheap prices etc etc ....it was like a Big Box store , but we bought all kinds of stuff there, to smuggle back .....hahahahah Do you know of this old building? I doubt it would have survived with all the Big box stores of today, but at least this old building had some character to it.

Les F said...

ps: Poly I had mentioned St Albans beach , because for years we used to go to plattsburg beach ( as did half of montreal ) but it became too crowded, & so we discovered St Albans which was a nice beach, and no where near as crowded.
later on in my teens , I spent a lot of time in the old Saxony Lounge,Rouses Pt. I believe it's gone now?? I know the old Anchorage Hotel burned down a few years back, (it didn't help that soe nut customs agent ,wouldn't let the firetruck through the border that was responding to help in the fire..but that's another story) I attended a wedding at that old Hotel, (can't even remember who it was for now)
but I sure liked that area, including going to the old Fort ( Fort Blunder, as it was known to locals)

pauline garneau said...

Hi Les We had a boat on Lake Champlain for years so we pretty well hit all the beaches and restaurants in the area. Butcher Block is an excellent restaurant but it is starting to show it's age but like all restaurants if they mess with the décor they lose their appeal. Tortilla Flats a very popular Mexican restaurant in Burlington just closed .
I think the factory outlets that you are referring to was actually in Winooski the city just north of Burlington in The Old Mill building. There were also factory outlets in Shelburne just south of Burlington but they are also closed. We shop at the Costco in Colchester just east of Burlington and on the main street in Burlington or just set the GPS and away we go.
St. Ann’s Shrine on Isle La Motte is still a very popular place to visit for the beach and picnic area.

Thanks Pauline these are some of the memories I do miss from that part of the country, also places like Ausable Chasm ,...and of course most of Bk Champlain , We really had a lot of beautiful places to travel to,in a short period of time, NY state Vermont and all the way to Old Orchard , or Hampton beach on that other Ocean ....it's all good.
I believe your right on about the Factory outlet being an old mill that's what I remember going down a hill (sort of ) into the parking lot, near a river??? It was a long time ago,but it;s great to try & recall these places I grew up with... Thanks Again, HF&RV
..and don't forget when not going south,we had Eastern Townships, as well as the other direction the Laurentians,& of course West.and I can't get any further West, than where I am now ( Victoria BC).......

Anyone remember Brody's in Plattsburgh. Used to be a local hot spot back when....Good bands lots of Canadian girls/guys and plenty of SAC guys to "argue with". We used to see how far you could throw a bud bottle in the parking lot.. empty of course.

Those were the days. I can't discus the other things we did in that area as I am unsure of the statute of limitations in NY state :>)

What a trip down memory lane Pauline has brought to us! I used to love going to Lake George for a holiday and was there a Grandby Zoo and Eastern Townships Fair every year? Ausable Chasm was stunning, but scary! Last time I visited was about 15 years ago and I got stage fright halfway along the overhanging walkway. I froze, cried and sat down for about 15 minutes until Richard coaxed me to close my eyes, hang on to his waist and just follow! Since then, here's a "girl" who's gone on several helicopter rides (no door over the "Outback"), abseilled down a cliff, Spread out like an eagle on the Flying Fox over a ravine and of course, crossed the Capalano Bridge (making it sway in the center) many times! I actually used the Capalano Bridge to overcome my fear of heights many years ago. My son saw a TV show about the bridge and laughed and teased me about not having the nerve to tackle it. That was a "red flag to a bull" and I had Richard photograph me walking over by myself....since then, I try to challenge myself and overcome fears about trying anything new and adventurous...don't always succeed, but I try!...Diane

Does Laurier BBQ still exist?
When I worked on St James St, the company teams went bowling near there. Now THAT was Montreal's very best BBQ chicken. The sights, the sounds, the smell of BBQ chicken and, of course ...the taste, all worked together somehow to make you feel like you had died and gone to BBQ heaven.

Thanks Les! Next time we're back in Montreal, I'll have to stop in at Laurier BBQ.

Does anyone remember the days when Labelle BBQ (located in east end Verdun; therefore, much closer to home) was "the place" for BBQ chicken. Labelle BBQ was there long before any chain or franchise BBQ stores were around. In it's heyday, Labelle would have rivaled any of the best BBQ restaurants in the Montreal area! As a kid, that was an exceptional treat and I really looked forward to going there! Just think, kids today look forward to a Mac and think that's a big deal ...blechhh, how tastes have changed!

Hi Ken, I certainly Remember Labelle BBQ.and it had a fancy very long sign above the restaurant, spelling out Labelle BBQ,.in writing form ( I think ?) but it sure stood out. I have been trying for years to find an old photo of the place, but so far no success.......I know there has to be someone ,somewhere, with the old shoebox full of old Verdun Photo's,.it's just a matter of time & we will find it. I noticed when looking up Laurier BBQ, I saw an ad for 'AuCoq BBQ' in Verdun, now that (if it's the same restaurant) has been around forever too (lesser known it seems) but I posted a photo many years ago,of it's frontage & their delivery vehicle. I will post it again: HF&RV

I just added a photo of Au Coq Modern's delvery vehicle & store frontage(to the above Chalet BBQ post), anyone remember this place? I can't say I really do, although the picture suggests something familiar, perhaps I've seen the car ? Looks like about a '68 Cortina' HF&RV

Les F said...

I'm sorry I read that as 'Au Coq Modern'........but it's Ti-Coq, I never heard of it.......
but it's listed as being (or having been) at 5236 Wellington Street,...still doesn't ring a bell.
but speaking of ringing a bell, I will post another popular BBQ joint, and you will most likely remember it's advertisment......you will no doubt recognise their delivery cars.............. HF&RV

Hi Ken I agree with you 100% Labelle BBQ was the best for chicken and Chinese food.I also remember their red leather booths and their circular table to seat a family. We liked it so much in 1964 we had our wedding reception upstairs in their reception hall. In 1963 we moved to Brossard and they would deliver across the bridge. It brought a little of Verdun with us.Pauline

Les F said...

Pauline any chance you took some photo's outside the restaurant ? Showing the Labelle sign ? That would be neat if by chance you did have one............. HF&RV

pauline garneau said...

Hi Les Yes I do have a picture of outside Labelle BBQ but it is of me getting out of the car in the rain. What I think I still have is their bill for the hall. I will look in my box of souvenirs (if I can find it) and see if there is anything of interest.Pauline

Glenn Larkin said...

Au Coq Moderne had a location on Verdun avenue, corner of Beatty. Their little yellow car stopped regularly at our home on Moffat. LaBelle and Chalet did not deliver to us, and one cannot live on Kosta's Pizza alone....

They had other locations, but I don't know where. And it was still there the last time I was in Verdun a couple of years ago. I hope to be Montrea in February - may have to check it out.

Diane Roberts said...

Great if you could find a photo Pauline. As you know, we had our wedding reception at Labelle BBQ also, but our photos don't show the outside of the building. Keep looking for that souvenir box!...Diane

Ken Graham said...

Pauline,

I had forgotten the red leather upholstery at Labelle's. That was really distinctive decor. Wow, did the lights (regarding that memory) go on when I read that. The picture, in my mind, of the inside of Labelle's is much clearer now.

Au Coq BBQ was at least as familiar to me, back in Verdun, as Swiss Chalet BBQ is to me today in Ontario. If I wasn't having their BBQ chicken at home, then I was having it at the regular staff meeting/lunch at my place of work.

Speaking of home delivery, one of the things that really surprised me when I moved to Ontario was the general lack of delivery by restaurants here, even in the smaller communities.
In Verdun, you could have just about anything delivered and into the wee hours of the night to boot. And, if one couldn't get something delivered from a local (inside the boundaries of Verdun) restaurant, then one just had to bite the bullet and call a restaurant in "Montreal" Now, unless a person wants pizza, pizza or more pizza delivered one has to get up ...regardless of any rain, snow, sleet or hail ...or hour of the night, go out and pick it up for his/herself! With all the effort involved, might as well just make something at home eh?
