WHERE TO FIND THE BEST MONTREAL FOOD!

I'm starting to consider joining Richard when he goes to Montreal in September and if I do I would like some help on where VC members think the best smoked meat, bbq chicken, chinese food etc., is served these days.  We usually go to the same places every time we visit, but next time, whether September or a couple of years,  I feel like a change and I now have all of you out there to help me  enjoy some of your favourite restaurants.  We'd also like to find a restaurant that serves great french cuisine...none of this nouvelle cuisine junk etc., great french country cooking.  Our special place for anniversaries etc used to be Au Vieux St Gabriel in old Montreal, but if it's still there, I think they cater to the tourist trade these days.  Does anyone know of any restaurant that serves great old fashioned desserts like Coconut Cream Pie and Tarte au Sucre?  Now you see why I needed TOPS!  Tempt me with your favourites and I'll keep a tally and see which restaurants win out...Thanking you all in advance...Diane...P.S.  Do any of Verdun's great pastry shops still operate, like Smith-Mains or Leiths etc?

The best smoked meat is at Moe's Deli on St. Jean Rd. in the West Island. I think it's even better than Chenoy's, and I used to love Chenoy's. We will drive from Casselman to Pointe Claire just to have smoked meat. It's really that good!

I used to really enjoy going to Rymark's for Pig's Knuckles. Kraussman's also was pretty good. I can't find these in any restaurants here in Oakville Ontario. Really miss this.

To pony19505 don't go to the Jardinier these days the place is closed due to sickness. The boss as to do everything himself and if he's not there he closes the place.P.S. I don't know what the sickness is
The Rymark's 1964 my first real job at the Toronto Dominion bank across the street I ate for 4 months 5 days a week the cold ham boiled in beer with boiled potatoes and beans and English mustard. Also discovered the Esquire just think. I used to see Tina Turner for the price of a beer.
Also ate at the Monterey and some nights listened the western music. FDR I still taste the big meatballs in my mind. There's another bar I remember that was sort of fading I believe it was called Silver's or something like that. You guys would know better.

Jumper01 The Jardenier is a real family restaurant. I guess he prefers to close rather than hire some one outside the family.Must admit you can't beat their price and it is always good.
FDR does it stand for Frank Di Rice? That goes way back . They had a special taste that stays with you. That's long gone.

Diane - don't forget to put Crescendo on your list ! Better for lunch than dinner so you will be able to see the river and Nun's Island and one of the red roofs is right outside the door.

Diane Roberts said...

Okay Sandy...one for the Crescendo! Oh, I'm getting heavier by the minute!...Diane

No problems shopping for clothes when I hit Montreal Pauline. I usually have to buy another suitcase before I leave town!. I also include May Wests, Dare Maple Cookies, St Hubert BBQ & Hot Chicken Sandwich sauces etc. I'm sure you bring back your "favourites" from Plattsburgh...I just do it a little further...Mtl to Australia!...Diane

Okay Guys, I think I'll pack the AlkaSeltzer and be ready to pay for "excess baggage" (me) on the flight home. Might be a good idea to just let Richard take this trip by himself because I feel the kilos piling on as I type!...Diane

Yum, Dilallo hamburgers, Mae Wests, Dare Maple Cookies yum, yum. House of Tom chinese food was really good, Labelle BBQ, Mike's Submarines & Mille feuilles from Smith Maines Bakery. Now I'm craving all of it

Labelle BBQ was where I first ate chinese food . As kids going to a restaurant was a big treat and we always wanted chicken from Labelles. When I got married in 1964 my wedding reception was at Labells and when we moved to the South Shore they use to deliver to us in Brossard. But it is long gone, to bad.

We courted at House of Tom. No matter where we eat, the rice is never as good. Once I wanted a BBQ pork sandwich he was out of sliced bread, I told him to put it on a hamburger bun after that I always ate it that way. Now we go to a little motel near Bruno the food is good but the rice is not like at House of Tom's

pauline garneau said...

Jumper 01 Where is house of Tom? I'd try it, we are always looking for good Chinese. We have a little restaurant near us called The Golden Bowl. The food is excellent but it is not like the old kind of Chinese food. Pauline

House of Tom is long gone I guess the taste changed and it didn't survive. It was on Verdun near the corner of Beatty next to the bank. There turning all the businesses into flats around there, you walk on the sidewalk and you can peer into their house.

To pony after reading your comment I guess you mean where I go in St-Bruno.
It's called Motel Et Restaurant St Bruno 2084 Bd Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Saint-Bruno, QC J3V 4P6
You go on the 116 towards Bruno when you get at the exit for Bruno you continue on up to the next exit on the left there's a Mon Pain shop across the street make a U-turn and go back down the 116 slow down it's just after the curve on the right.

I have never found chicken sou guy as good as House of Tom. It was the best ever. My parents used to order chinese food from there every once in a while, it was a big treat to either order out, we didn't go out to eat hardly at all.
