Dr Norman Bethune

Most members are familiar with Dr Norman Bethune and his biography is easily accessable such as on Wikipedia and at your local library but did anybody know of his involvement with Verdun in the middle 30s. That's right, it is mentioned in one of his biographies, namely BETHUNE by Roderick Stewart, it is mentioned on page 71 and here is the sentence:

WORKING WITH GEORGE MOONEY, WHO WAS A Y.M.C.A. SECRETARY IN THE MONTREAL SUBURB OF VERDUN, BETHUNE OPENED A FREE CLINIC. EVERY SATURDAY AT NOON, HE TREATED WITHOUT CHARGE WOMEN, CHILDREN AND UNEMPLOYED MEN IN MOONEY'S OFFICE. THE VERDUN CLINIC WAS ALMOST A POLITICAL ACT, BETHUNE'S SPONTANEOUS, ANGRY REACTION TO HIS OWN PROFESSION AND A GOVERNMENT INDIFFERENT TO SUFFERING, BUT HE REMAINED POLITICALLY CONSERVATIVE.

I recommend reading his biography as this great humanitarian is really inspiring.

Les,
I want to add that the book mentioned was added to our library in 1996 (it is shown on the inside cover) and I am the only one since then to have borrowed the book. This shows how little the public is aware of Dr Norman Bethune's achievments. He lived many years in Montreal (Beaver Hall Hill)
and was chief surgeon at the Sacré Coeur Hospital in Cartierville for 5 years in the beginning of the 30s. There is a wing at the hospital named after him. That is the hospital were my wife goes and I noticed this and explained to Jeannette who he was. She had never heard of him.

Guy, I buy books from the library quite often, they have at the entrance to each library branch ,a book cart ,that they add to regularly, they take books that they have too many copies of,or ones that are not checked out often, and they sell them for a couple of dollars, that's a fantastic deal,So you may want to approach the library ,(maybe in writing) and ask what their policy is, You may be able to buy that book & add it to your own Library,...?? It's worth a shot,.. I have bought many books that were in almost new condition & some were new. When I pick up this Bethune book I will have a look at it's last checked out date, also I will checkout the for sale cart....... HF&RV
