Steve,
It does'nt say that it's in Verdun. Of course it reminds of of the old bandstand but today there is a senior citizen's building called Manoir Verdun wich is where the Woodland Park was situated.

I think if I'm not mistaken this bandstand is at the corner of Bishop Power and Lasalle Blvd.

Lorna that would make it near where flat rock was or the old power house, interesting.

What years are you thinking of ,to be Bishop Power & Lasalle?
I lived on 9th avenue in Lasalle & on the corner of Bishop power was a Shell Station,..and on the nw side was nothing but land continuing along to the old Golf Course,,,,,,no bandstand ,that looked anything like the one in the picture, at least not from the late 60's to the mid 70's .....There was a hotdog joint on 8th & Lasalle (9th actually ended at Edward ,& Edward ended as a merge on to Lasalle / Bishop Power corner sort of)........ I may have a picture I took from the little park ,that lasalle put in when they finally got rid of the ruins of the Power House......because on the Water / Riverfront side at Bishop Power & Lasalle there was nothing.(othethan the old Power House at one time) it's now part of a bird sanctuary I'm told.......
As for the retirement home at Woodland ,it did not replace the Woodland Bandshell,.the building was actually built on the other side of the boardwalk's railings, and the bandshell of course was on the Lasalle Blvd side of the Boardwalk. I think we've posted pics of that too..They did put the road directly through straight up from Woodland to the old folks home.(Retirement Home as it really is called)

Hi Steve - I just put two and two together and realized that the map Guy posted of Terrasse Serre is where this bandstand is. That's one drawback of not being able to post pics in existing threads. But now we know where it is. Is that a bridge or bike path going over to the little island?

Guy Billard said...

Sandy,
That is an earth dam that replaced the Hydro dam. It is for pedestrians and bicycles for access to Gardner Island. I crossed that dam by foot a couple of years ago to take photos. You can go to the photo section of my site and go to Album no. 4 and you will see an aerial view of the old Hydro Dam wich was probably demolished in the 60s or 70s (i'm guessing) and replaced with the earth dam.

There was never a bandstand there, Guy is correct there was a pedestrian causeway (earthen dam) built over to the little island & another one closer to 7th av as well to enclose a small body of water ,which they may have by now filled in. I did live on both (th av right near Edward/Lasalle) & then right across the street from where this new bird sanctuary is.... this was made in the early to mid 70's after years of wondering what to do with the old ruins of the Dam/Power House..it was a playground for us as kids to cross the old ruins & tempt fate of falling into the river ,either side would have been dangerous,as if you fell into the drink on the high side(lachine side) you would have had the pressure of the river trying to push you through the dam,& if you fell onto the lower side,it was quite a drop to not so deep water ( VerdunSide) .....I have an aerial shot in a photo album here, that will show you the two (earthen dams) pedestrain causeways that were built in those years, but I do not see how there could have been anything like those buildings in that photo, that ever could have existed in this spot,
It was either the dam ( power house) or this closed in water area,That photo in the other thread shows what appears to be like a tennnis court or basketball playground etc etc ,..t certainly was no building in Lasalle that I recall. and it definetly was not the bandstand at Woodland ......where did the photo originate from ,was it the old image montreal site ,maybe they would have more info avaiable on this old building. Yikes - so it's not on that spot? Guy - I just looked at your album with the aerial view - great pics. Is Gardner Island the same as what we used to call Heron Island? I have to go back to your site and look at your albums more closely - lots of good stuff there.

Les - I never tried to walk across the dam - I think maybe my brothers might have. I used to go there all the time and sit on the rocks (on the Verdun side) and let the water swirl around me. I loved that place - and we always had egg and onion sandwiches and those little cakes that came two in a package - white cake with caramel on top covered in chocolate. We always called it the Powerhouse but a lot of people called it Flat Rock. Going to the bathroom was always a problem - numero uno was easily taken care of in the river but the other thing - you had to go and crouch behind a shrub or something. Those were the days :)

Forgot to say, we always came home smelling like the river. It was great!

Sandy Gardner Island I think is the Island that the dam was connected to,it was a man made Island..
Les http://www.imtl.org/montreal/image.php?id=4693 was where the picture came from.

Steve,
The photo of the Terrasse Serre is not necessarily a Bandshell, it looks to me that a painting was made on the side of the wall of the building. Also, are you sure that is the name of park ? There is one thing I have learned in my research on history and genealogy, never take things for granted and always check, recheck and triple check.

Going from memory, I'm sure it's where they hold the
St.Jean the Baptist and Canada Day Celebrations.
Which is right around Bishop Power and Lasalle blvd.
Next time I go to my Mom and Dad's I'll check it for sure.

Now we know it was called Blacks Bank,.and not Gardner Island (see Gazette headline & story,in the newer thread.

or just read it here. I was sure it was mistakenly identified . HF&RV
