Hello from Louise Lafontaine

I found this site by doing a Google search for "Quai Leblanc".

I noticed Bruce Milmine is a contributor. We both live in Ottawa. Bruce is married to Marion Snelgrove and we connected for the first time in 47 years. We were next-door neighbours as kids.

I met with a teacher from St. Willibrord, Ms Alice Bundza, about 18 years ago for a reunion. She was living in the state of New York. That information was given to me by another former teacher, Mrs. Berub챕, who I read a few minutes ago, had passed away this summer.

I am on-line friends with Heather Cohen. She used to live on Willibrord near LaSalle Blvd.

I used to go roller-skating on the boardwalk.

On hot summer days, we cooled ourselves by going to the park near the Auditorium and running under the tube sprinkler and drinking small bottles of free cold milk.

I remember the ice storm in the early 60s. I remember a terrible fire on Willibrord that we could see from our back porch.

I remember the fireworks and the parades.

Was there a Detective Kelly at the police station ?

I remember 2 young brothers, who drowned, winters apart. They had been toboganning on the embankement and slid right into the river. They lived on LaSalle Blvd, near the power house.

What a way to connect all the dots. This is a great site for information.

I love seeing the pics and hearing about the old haunts.

I remember Yvette's store across from the police station.

I remember the dump behind the hospital. One year there were tonnes of pineapples that had been dumped there. Yuk. What a place to put a dump!!!

Hi Louise Lafontaine,.........I'm glad you found this site,  check it out and explore all the info available here,........and above all               have Fun & Remember Verdun

Louise , you mention Marion Snelgrove,...would she be relate to a Debbie Snelgrove,......I know a Helen Moran , who was a good friend of Debbie Snelgrove many decades ago,....We also had a member on this site named 'Pipefitter' or something like that ,who seemed to know Debbie, but felt it was a 'fishing expedition into her whereabouts' & didn't respond with any affirmative stuff....... But perhaps all these years later ,would make him less aprehensive about a positive response....... Cause in the early days , We were all skepticall of any computer type of info....................Yikes !!           HF&RV

Hi Harriet   I lived just across the lane from the barber shop on 2nd ave - at 219. Moved from there in the early 60s to Argyle Ave. When were you there?   Robin

harriett MSN said...

Hi Robin, I was at 201 - 2nd very top floor left hand side on top of the snack store wher I use to buy my cigarettes 2 for 5 cents. Hung around with Alain Quimet and Jacques Brunet and others but I really cannot remember their names. I live there in 59 to 61 and then moved to Richard with my parents. Never really went back to that area after the move. Take care Harriett

A friend of mine, who is not a member here,  sent me this picture of her Fourth Grade class at St. Wllibrord's - Alice Bundza is the teacher.  I was in another Fourth Grade right across the hall - Miss Robi nson/Mrs. Gamberg -  so I did not know Miss Bundza at all but here is the picture anyway.

I see all the names are on the blackboard - although not in any particular order.  Two names on there have been mentioned on this site quite often - Margaret Trottier and Greer Nolan - maybe Diane McGivern also.

biking2006 MSN said...

Is Diane McGivern any relation to Leslie McGivern? He was a friend in the 50s who married my neighbour Isabel McIntyre.

Hi biking ,.given the time frame of the passing of your friend , I think there's a good chance we may find his obit,.& be able to post here in cyber-space for anyone who wants to visit the "In Memoriam" link here on the site,.......I am assumimg we will carry this link over to a new site ,possibly I did a cursory search to see if I could find it for you,but I was unsuccessful ,the City where he last resided would help....                                                                                        hf&rv

Yes George - that's the guy :)  His mother, Rita,  and my mother are/were first cousins.  They lived on Wellington near 1rst or 2nd.  I think Terri still lives in Verdun - where is Danny now?  Where is his sister Diane?  Do you know?

football19610 MSN said...

Hi Sandy:   I believe he lives in Ville LaSalle, but am not 100% sure. I lost contact with him and Terri after I was transferred by CN from Montreal to Toronto.  I use to run into him every once in awhile when I had to visit CN Headquarters.   I haven't seen or heard anything about Terri in decades.   George

Hi Louise, It's a small world, indeed.  My mother was Mrs. Bérubé, and she passed away on July 6th, however my sister chose to have her funeral mass at a later time.  That was held at St. Willibrord's Church on Oct. 23rd.  I found Alica (Bundza) Mossey, and she came up from Rousse's Point, NY for the mass.  I had never met her before, however she taught my sister, Claire, I believe two years in a row.  Perhaps you knew my sister.   I did my 4 years of high school at St. Gabriel's Academy in Point St. Charles, so I didn't know too many people from VCHS.   Madeleine

Not sure if my first message went through -
---------------------------------------------------

Hi Madeleine,

I met your mom in the late 80s or early
90s when we were organizing a get together with Alice Bundza
Mossey.   Alice lived in Champlain N.Y. then.   I took a
group photo of the reunion members on the steps of St. Willibrord's
church.

I met with your mom several times.  She had a hard
time going up and down the stairs.  I have some nice pics of her
too.  Some really sweet close-up shots.  She still had her cute
freckles.  She was in her 80s then, I believe.  I will try to post
them for you when I find them.

Your mom had given me your address to write you, and I
did, but I didn't hear back from you.  I am 60 years old.  I don't
remember the name of your sister that I hung out with for a short while.
But she would be about my age.  I remember you lived on a street corner,
above a store.  I thought that was so cool!

I will look for the pics and try to post them as soon
as I can.  They will need to be scanned.

Madeleine, it was your mom who had found my ad in the
Montreal Gazette and had given me Alice's address.  It was an old address
and she had since moved, but the person living there knew her and passed my
letter on to her.  Her daughter was driving her to a golf game when she
read my letter.  She said she cried.  She was an awesome teacher
!!!

Hi again Louise,   Are you sure that my mother gave you MY address?  I am 64 years old, so I would have been at St. Gabriel's by the time you started at VCHS.  My sister is almost 59....her name is Claire.  I never received any mail from you, as I certainly would have answered, out of curiosity, if not courtesy.  I love to keep in touch with old friends.    I'd enjoy seeing the pictures of my mom when you get them scanned.  You can post them here, or send them to me via email.    Alice seemed like a wonderfully caring woman.  I was so happy to finally meet her, as I know my mother had attended her wedding.   I know that Claire adored her as a teacher.  I have a feeling that you know Claire.  She had red curly hair.

Hey Louise, it's me again.  I called my sister, Claire, this morning, and you went to school with her.  My mother probably gave you her address.  She lives in Milton, ON.  I'm close to Ottawa.  That should clear up that question....lol.   Have a great weekend!
