VHS Year Books 1957

I would like to see some of my old classmates, and also H.S. friends in different classes, the way they looked in the middle to late fifties. I checked out ebay Canada and nada. So if someone has a 'year' book for VHS either1957 or 1958 I will buy it or borrow it with a deposit of course. I have a few class pictures that where posted here by V.C. members, and I appreciated them very much.

VERDUN TIMES

i find back then a little verduner learned about real money, no credit, parents didn't
hand out money, no restaurants, wanted that bike from wolfe cycles in the front window?? hockey, football equipment, even girls wanted barbie dolls, skipping rope
little kicthen sets, wagan etc.
we had to learn how to make a real dollar to get that stuff we wanted
there was the newspaper run, grocgeries deliveries using your wagon
deliver beer with those big baskets on the bikes, pharmacy delivery
shoveling snow, girls were baby sitting, there was lots more of self employment
for that person to make a real dollar.
back then we made real money, not like today printing paper worthless money
and worst credit, back then we lent monay to third world countries to help them out out??
today we owe third world countries on money borrowed from them sad but
100% true.
lets see back then a verduner would get a average of 10 delivey's of groceries
on a saturday work day summer time, the wagons can move much easy on the
sidewalks.
25 cents a delivery, plus if the service is good you get a dime tip or at times another
25 cents. so on average 35 cents a run.
10 x 35 cents = 3.50 of real silver money back in the early 60's
what would that be worth today if you never used it and just keep it in a box,
drawer.
last month silver it over 21 dolars a ounce, today it tanked to 16.80 a ounce
don't worry the cental banks are just buying time, soon silver will hit over 30.00
dollars a ounce.
real silver money from 1920 to 1967
today value on 16.80 a ounce
dime = 1.01
quarter = 2.52
half dollar = 5.05
dollar = 10.10
back then a small coke and a bag of chips was less that quarter, plus you get 2 cents for the bottle return.
something to think about

Bev Brisco sue and peter Brawly

There are a few people I have been looking for over the years.
Bev Brisco use to live on Egan and left Verdun after getting married and then moved to , of all places, Sudbury ont.
I'm also looking for Wendy Mills and Susan and Peter Brawly. (spelling?)
I have already posted that I'm looking for anyone who may have been in one of my classes in Woodland school. I'm looking to find class pictures with myself in it, for I lost a photo album years ago with a great collection of all my pictures growing up, including class pictures from Woodland school. My favorite was my grade three class, with Wendy Mills and Gail Sharky and Ken Taylor. If you have any I'd appreciate you letting me know.

Nick Kotsos

From the Toronto Star:
NICHOLAS WILLIAM KOTSOS Died peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on April 5, 2008. Nick was born on January 17, 1948 in Montreal, Quebec. Nick leaves behind to celebrate his life, his cherished wife Lee-Ann and her two children Erin and Ryan, his treasured sons, Michael and David, his first wife Linda, his daughters-in-law Angie and Kerry, and his precious granddaughter Ellie. Nick will be missed by his siblings Sophia, Kathleen, Dennis and Steven, by his nieces and nephews Sandra, Karen, Patrick, Melissa and Steven. Nick was predeceased by his parents William and Alice Kotsos of Montreal. Nick was a gifted and inspiring educator who touched the lives of many young people in Montreal, with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, and with the YMCA Academy in Toronto. He mentored dozens of students and teachers in his role as educator, department head, guidance counsellor, and curriculum coordinator. Nick believed in the potential and ability of every young person he encountered. His passions in life were many and he shared those passions freely and generously with his family and friends, be it his craftsmanship as a woodworker, his love of the blues and art, his beloved Michigan Wolverines, or a fine meal that he would spend hours in meticulous preparation. Nick valued and celebrated friendship. Visitation will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. West, Oakville, (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Earth Hour

DEAR ABBY

Dear Abby,
My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the
beginning, and, when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse,
everyone knows that he cheats on me. It is so humiliating.
Also, since he lost his job six years ago, he hasn't even looked for a new
one. All he does all day is smoke cigars, cruise around and shoot the
bull with his buddies, while I have to work to pay the bills.
Since our daughter went away to college he doesn't even pretend to like
me, and even hints that I may be a lesbian. What should I do?
Signed: Clueless in New York Dear Clueless:
Grow up and dump him. Good grief woman! You don't need him anymore!
You're a Senator from New York running for President of the United States.
Act like one

Historical Nore

On this day in 1917, at 8:35 p.m., President Woodrow Wilson called Congress into special session and asked them to declare war on Germany. Appearing before a joint session of the Senate and House, he said, "The world must be made safe for democracy."

America had been able to maintain an uneasy neutrality for about three years while the war raged on in Europe. But the "Zimmermann Note" was made public in March. This message from German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmermann proposed that the Mexican government ally itself with Germany, in exchange for Germany's help in regaining Mexico's "lost territory in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona." The message also suggested that Mexico press Japan to ally itself with Germany. That note — and Germany's sinking of five American ships — changed public opinion about intervention in the war. When the war ended, a year and a half later (November 11, 1918), 9 1/2 million soldiers had died, in addition to 13 million civilians, who perished from massacres, starvation, and disease.

Ferry Service Verdun-La Tortue-Laprairie

There used to be a ferry service between Verdun and the South Shore as described in following articles/photos:

Service: La Tortue-Verdun, Sainte Catherine-Verdun, Laprairie-Montreal and Laprairie-Pointe Saint Charles.

Also enclosed is the tragedy that cost the lives of 40 to 50 people on the 19th of May 1819 above Nun's Island when a boat similar to the one shown capsized during a storm.
I have also reprinted photos of a ferry landing on torchy warf  (Quaie de la Tortue) that previously appeared as they are on the same subject.

Food

I have learned about a place in Guelph, called Pierre's Poutine. He is apparently from Montreal, not sure where exactly.  They supposedly make authentic Quebec poutine and also have steamies and smoked meat. I have yet to try it, just found out about this on Sunday. I'm hoping to go there very soon to sample the goods, (except for the poutine, not a cheese person), but they say the fries are "real fries", so I'm looking forward to a steamie or smoked meat & fries. Will let you know how it once we try it.

Have a good day,

Carole
