one week home

Hi all, just got back from spending a week home in Mtl. Stayed with a friend of mine in Lasalle behind the Haraki. This was the 1st visit home in the winter since I left in "87". Froze my ass off. But it was a winter wonderland. So Pretty. I took daily trips through Verdun to pick up my brother on Evelyn and then we'd go visit my Dad at Ste. Anne's Vets hosp. We took the Lakeshore home. What a beautiful drive that was and much needed after spending the day at the hosp. During my stay,I had a Woodland's pizza, smoked meat, hot dog from Lasalle drive in and a really bad french onion soup at Peddlers in Lasalle on my last night. I've had much better soup here in south fl. at Applebees. All in all, it was a good trip. Took lots of pictures, lots of the same that have already been posted, but will try and post something different.
Best to all.
Wendy

Yes it isn't a bad idea to have a blanket in the car,& candles ,and extra gloves,.biggest thing if you get stranded is to keep dry........ Remember the old plastic bag trick ,in your boots ,as kids ,...it worked...........I can Remember getting a flat on the 2/20 after just having left my girlfriends place on Ile Perot ( no cell phones,in those days) Guess what ,.had the jack ,but no tire iron ,for the wheels......had to hoof it back to a phone & call , got her brother to bring me a tire iron,I changed the tire, and was on my way..........all that at -20 F .........I would not like to have been stranded any further out......Brrrrrrrr: keep a blanket & some provisions in your vehicle                                                                                  HF&RV

les   you are rite, people only look at the person when they are doing well. back then in verdun delivering gorceries at a very early age the courage to walk up for the first time, to a mom in a grocery store and ask if she needs your service. carry those boxes placing them in the wagon, having a conversation so next time the mom remembers you. while pulling the wagon full of boxes, making sure you don't break nothing in the boxes, then to carry all those boxes of groceries up all those stair landings one, two, three, landings, 3 times for theres 3 boxes of groceries after the mom opens her purse and hands you that real silver quarter at times the mom gives you a extra silver dime for a tip, then you know she likes your service and wil remember you next time?? you know theres competition back there, lots of wagons along side that gorcery store. walking back, you know your wagon goes in rthe back of the line just like a taxi stand. at times the mom would go and find you, and tell you to take her order even if your wagon is on the end of the line. then you know your talent of comunication works well, she remembers you for next time, plus you know you will get that silver dime tip as a extra bonus. today that silver quarter and silver dime in scrap silver is worth $3.50. when i see a little person working, i always smile encourage that little person making sure they feel important. thank you les for the memory to come back.

Walter (metalman) I had to laugh at the description of heading to the back of the line,.but I also Remember being asked before the woman would even walk in to Steinberg's if I would take her order,.Your right it always made you feel a little important in front of the other kids, cause they knew ,that was a guaranteed tip,.......another thing was funny how well organised we were as kids to head down to the store every Saturday morning ,it was like all the kids were hypnotised & walked towards the store from all the block s around ,to line up ,and work,..I always went to the Steinberg's at Wellington & Willibrord,.right near the Savoy,.so when we took an order passed the front doors of the theater we checked out the movie that was on that day,and sized up the candy counter,.knowing just what snack we would buy ,when we took our earnings & went to the movies, a few extra tips made sure of a box of Glossette Raisins ,in that little cardboard box with the cellophane front window on it,....and after you ate the box ( only took a few minutes...hahaha) you could blow into the box at just the right angle ,& make a very annoying whistling sound,...all the kids would do it...... but it was always a better feeling to know that you earned your own money & biught your own stuff........ Funny though every once in  awhile you would still get some miserable old bag ,who didn't tip........( but maybe they were just more poor & couldn't afford it)..I never thought of tha back then:    hahahahahaha Wagons in the good weather & use a toboggan in the snowy weather,......nothing really stopped us working,,,,,,,  I was luck I also had a job at my oldmans shop,so I made a few bucks there too $1 or $2 bucks a week ,..that I got in my own 'pay enveloppe'.......Good Memory prompt ,makes me laugh to think back to those times,............   HF&RV

Wendy   Good to hear you had a good trip back..go up Melrose..? How is your Dad and Steve doing?   Lad

les   don't forget those little boxes of bridge mixure chocolates. yes the the savoy, remember the voyue theatre in the point. walking or taking the 58 wellington bus to the savoy. back then no credit cards, you wanted something you worked for it. i remember those little brown enveloppes, at times we went to the tavern near the house of dragon, on payday, the taverns back then would cash your cheque, buy a quart, pickled tongue, pickled egg. today they have money mart

les__f MSN said...

Yes certain Taverns would cash your pay cheque,.and usually ,they rounded the number down,.and kept athe small shange for their service.........    Walter those MoneyMarts make a fortune,.......it's big business. but in our growing up days ,it was a learning experience to 'have to work' till you had enough cash to buy the toy you wanted,..Nowadays just ask Mom or Dad,.or Granpa or Granma ,.....and guess what ,you get your new cell phone or i-pod,.or $100 dollar runners........hahahahahaha                                                                                hf&rv

Hi Metalman, know the area well. I'm about 40min. west of there. The beach area has changed so much since I moved here in 87. They're tearing down the little Mom and Pop motels and putting up these stupid big condos. I'm always surprized at the new construction if I have'nt gone to the beach in a few months. I wish they would've left well enough alone. What can you do? Wendy
