Ron (SGWU731)  ,...This is a Fantastic photo,.very well taken,.the Verdun Police Department ,.also sponsored Hockey Teams, too....but back to this picture of yours,.the background is perfect,.We can see the 'tower' for the fire hoses,in the background,......also the top of 'the old'' Wooden Bleachers' ans you can see the 'uprights' goalposts on the Stadium field,.climbed on those a few times............hahahahah   also notice that the Floods were only on one side (I think it was like that till they added those huge cement bleacher stands later) ......Great Shot Ron ,.Thanks for adding & sharing it with us,,,,,,,Great Stuff                                     Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Thx, I can't take credit for the photo quality - it was taken by a professional; it has held up well over the years. I think the concrete stands you refer to were installed when the Montreal Beavers of the Continental Football League relocated from the Autostade (Expo 67)  to the Verdun Stadium in the late 60's.

Just found this article ,which let's us know ,that Our old cement stands are now re=cycled (a nice way of saying 'demolished')  ....it seems that the City of Verdun 'sold' the Stands ,the fencing , & various other related stuff, to Concordia University,.who used it for a number of years, and have now built new facilities: The grandstand was part of the old Verdun Stadium acquired from the City of Verdun for $1, when that stadium site was cleared to build condominiums. The purchase included a concrete grandstand, fencing and a press box. The stadium grandstand seated about 2,000 fans, and there was additional standing room.

The opening of Concordia Stadium with the grandstand took place on Sept. 9, 1989, with the third annual Shrine Bowl football game, featuring the Stingers and the Bishop's Gaiters. The game was broadcast live on TSN.
the whole story can be found at the following link: http://www.universitysport.ca/e/story_detail.cfm?id=64          I would imagine moving this size structure ,would be realtively costly, and Verdun most likely saved a lot of money by unloading it for a buck,  Although seeing the Condos are built on a Garbage Dump ,perhpas some 'clean fill' would have fit right in,without having to move it too far,.cause I would imagine they would have had to make sure the ground would tolerate the weight of these Condos,......                                                                                                  HF&RV

Ron   Great photo..I played Pony for Police at Q.E.Park .Might have been same year or one after...memory fuzzy...Midget would be one age group below Pony..and in this picture were you guys Inter-City? Also your uniforms were nicer than ours... Or was Pony below Midget? Like I said been a few years....Pony was set up that all city parks had a team..mine was Willibrord Park so I think they were the Red Sox. Somehow they put me on the Police Team from Therrien Park...Interesting being only anglo on team....man it was a good time..   Lad

Midget was the league after Bantam which was after Pony League. Quite a few of us on the Police Midget Team picture played Little League at Wilson Park then Pony League for the Wilson Park Giants and Bantam together - I think Bob Burke played Little and Pony League out of Melrose Park.   This Police Midget team played against 1 or 2 other Verdun Midget Teams and teams from Beaconsfield and Baie D'Ufre in the Lakeshore Midget League. Our 1964 team (pictured) won the League Championship.   Rgds Ron

Ron:   Great photo. I have been playing ball (actually sr. men's three pitch) with Stewart Buchanan for the past ten years.   There seems to less than a full compliment of players in that photo. Are there any players missing, such as Gary Butler and Ken Rosevear?   Gord Gibbons Brampton, Ontario

Hi Gord, Ken and Gary didn't play on this team - I remember them well. The only player on this team that is not in the picture is Alain Belanger who was a very good pitcher. When I worked in Toronto 9-10 years ago, I used to see Gary at the Dixie Squash Club, where I was a member. Say hi to Stewart Buchanan for me when to see/hear from him.   Rgds Ron Chapdelaine
