TRIBUTE TO A DOG

TRIBUTE TO A DOG

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.
A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side.
He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince.
When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

-Senator George Vest, 1870

So true, they truly are "Man's Best Friend".  I have two dogs and they have been with me since they were 12 weeks old.  I got one at the SPCA in Montreal and the other was purchased in Ontario.  I don't understand a person who has a dog/dogs and ties them up outside 24/7, never bringing them indoors at all.  The only contact they have with their master is being fed.  Why have a dog if you are not going to care for it, play with it and above all love it?

I'm also an animal lover and a parent of 2 rescue cats and 1 dog. I adopted a dog named Tramp, from Clintmore Animal Hosp. in Boca Raton, Fl. which has been featured on Animal Cops(Miami) on Animal Planet a number of times. He was 8yrs. when we got him and the vet said he would become blind. We've had him 5yrs now,and as of last yr. the vet said he can only see shawdows. We've all noticed the decline of his eyesight and I help him as much as I can. My husband and kids get quite a chuckle when he bumps into the cats, they give him a swat, or when he misjudges the couch by about 6" and lands on the floor. Shame on them. Anyways I came across this in a magazine called Pet Pages from the vets office. You may know it.                                    THE CREATION When God had made the earth and sky the flowers and the trees, He then made all the animals the fish, and the birds and bees. And when at last He'd finished not one was quite the same. He said, "Ill walk this world of mine and give each one a name." And so He traveled far and wide and everywhere He went, a little creature followed Him until its strenght was spent. When all were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea, the little creature said, "Dear Lord, there's not one left for me". Kindly the Father said to him, "I've left you to the end.I've turned my own name back to front and called you dog, My Friend." Author Unknown   Wendy

Does anyone remember the Collie I had as a kid?  His name was Bingo.  He would escape my clutches quite often and wander Verdun for a couple of days.  My Father even found him sitting on another person's couch looking out their front window at him while he was on his way to work.  Quite a character.   Debra

Hi Debra. no I don't remember your collie, but I remember one on Melrose named Baron,  just a few doors down from my house (1076) that dog seemed to be around for ever. Also the Elkins dog (Teddy)Bannantyne and Woodland. Richard Mullins used to say Teddy was playing chicken with the cars. He was always wandering around the neighborhood unleashed liked most dogs in those days, but lived a long life. Wendy

Hi   Back when I had a house in Chateuguay..we had a Newfoundland, and we lived real close the Chat. River...she got away from the dogsitter since we were down in Wildwood. If anyone knows the area she swam from Chateuguay down the river to Huntingdon,Ormstown area. The guy from animal rescue spotted her with a big branch in her mouth and tought it was a bear at first. Anyway he pulled over opened his door to the pick up and she got out jumped in and layed down..kinda tired..We got the call to come and get her when we got back. They told us no one could believe that she came all this way. None the worse for wear...   Fond memory. Lad
