RemembrancePoppy and RemembrancePurposes and Objectives

The mission of The Royal Canadian Legion is “to serve veterans and their dependants, to promote Remembrance, and to act in the service of Canada and its communities.” In essence, the purposes and objectives of the Legion were born of the need to further the spirit of comradeship and mutual assistance among all who have served and to never forget the deeds of the fallen.
It is paramount that the Legion strives to pass on these goals and traditions to the families and descendants of our ex-service personnel and to raise this awareness among all Canadians.

The major source of funding for the Legion to accomplish this most important work is the annual Poppy Campaign, the foundation of our Remembrance Program. It is the generosity of Canadians that enables the Legion to ensure that our veterans and their dependants are cared for and treated with the respect that they deserve. This November campaign, which sees Poppies distributed to Canadians of all ages, serves to perpetuate Remembrance by ensuring that the memory and sacrifices of our war veterans are never forgotten.

The Legion also maintains a leading role in the creation and care of memorials to the contributions and valour of our veterans and ex-service members. We are deeply honoured and proud to accept the task of organizing Remembrance ceremonies throughout the country, including the National Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa. In addition, working in concert with other veterans’ organizations and the Canadian government, the Legion has vowed to ensure that the preservation of the records and memories of our fallen heroes and returning veterans continues
in perpetuity.

The Royal Canadian Legion was honoured to initiate and coordinate the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the Centennial in 2000 and to suggest the declaration of 2005 as The Year of the Veteran. These and other commemorative projects and activities led by The Royal Canadian Legion have been welcomed by Canadians who have never hesitated to demonstrate their support in acknowledging the debt that is owed to those who sacrifice so much. We repay this debt in
our “Remembrance.”

There is a young musician from British Columbia that has written a song called "Soldier". On his website you can download the video free of charge. Click on the link: http://www.hlookoff.com/

les__f MSN said...

Hi Maggie,.thanks for that info,.......... here's alittle more about this artist Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) March 5, 2007 -- Soldiers' Angels and Singer-Songwriter, Shawn Hlookoff (recently signed under a major recording label) have produced a moving music video and song "Soldier" dedicated to honoring the men and women of our Armed Forces in a respectful manner. The artist and Soldiers' Angels are donating this DVD and song for free (download) to every school, organization and service member in the country for use as a Memorial Day tribute and learning tool. While reaching out to each school and teacher in an effort to speak to our nation's educators and students the goal is to donate this contemporary DVD as a new vision for our schools' Memorial Day ceremonies. Entitled "Soldier", the video and song is a tribute to our military personnel and highlights the sacrifices our service members and their families willingly make. The song and video squarely tackle the personal issues that Armed Forces members and their families face each and everyday. When Shawn approached us for help in getting the word out, we were more than excited This "staggeringly beautiful" tribute to the service members, first generated attention when a Canadian version was produced for Canada's Remembrance Day. Over 4000 Canadian schools downloaded the DVD for use in their ceremonies and class projects. To date, 1000's of American teachers and students have downloaded the files for use as a Memorial Day video tribute, class project and many other projects   .the above found at this address: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/3/prweb509129.htm  where more can be read of the article,..if you Google the kids name sevveral hits come up,         nice to see younger people appreciating the efforts .........    HF&RV

Shawn Hlookoff ~ My life in video Shawn Hlookoff   Soldier February 01, 2007 10:39PM This pod is a song and video written to honor the personal sacrifices that our Soldiers make. It is not about war, it is not meant to glorify or encourage war...it is really just a way for me to say that in all of this mess, people are giving up their lives at home, sacrifcing time with their families and giving what most of us could not. I am personally not for War.......but I do believe those who are put in harms way deserve to be respected. I am donating this song and free DVD download to every school and student in the country for Memorial Day to be used as a teaching tool, school project or. If you'd like to know more go to www.SoldierSupport.org or www.memorialdayusa.com Thanks Peace Shawn

Hi there !   Even if there is a reference to 1942, I’m quite sure that this photo was taken at a later date as can be asserted from the « new city hall Â» of Verdun built in 1958. JM

Is Quebec the only province that does not get a day off for Rememberance Day? What are your thoughts on the effects of the day off or lack there of?

carver3570 MSN said...

HI.  I'm wondering if i should reply to this. The CPR a company that made fortunes during the war and encouraged its employees to enlist Would not after the war on Nov. 11 let the vetrans go accross the street to Dominion Square at 11 o'clock to attend the sevice. If they did they lost pay. Ron

Hi Maggie,..........I can Remember when I first got out here to the Coast,.and seeing everyone get a day off (paid stat),..for Remembrance Day,.and I thought it was quite weird,.as I only Remember ,even from schooldays that we stopped everything we were doing in class,.or at work ,.at 11 am ,and everything stood quiet for 2 minutes.( I actually thought it was only one minute in those days ,.but it seems tradition has been two minutes I guess)   The fact that We (collectively) pause to Remember, and show Our Respect * Appreciation,.is the most important thing,.....but I suppose it's good for People to get a day off too,.......even schools are closed on this day.           On a side note,  I was amazed at how many young people attended the Remembrance Day Ceremonies,...it seems the message is being taught to the young ones and 'they get it'....I have also heard that this was the case at all the monuments around town,....so that  means they are being taught about the enormous sacrafices made by the men & women who died ...     I think that is good that the memory will carry on...........

claroleca2 MSN said...

Maggie, I've never had a day off for Rememberance day here in Ontario.  I think the government get it off, no mail, beer stores, etc.

maggiemck MSN said...

Just wondering, claroleca, then if the 2 minutes at 11 a.m. is observed?   carver3570, I always thought that having to work or go to school and standing silent for 2 minutes at 11 got the point across more than giving people a day off work and school but I never took into account the veterans and others involved in ceremonies that may not be free to serve. I wonder why the federal government has not stood up to the provinces and insisted on declaring the day a National Holiday. Soon there will be no WWII veterans left but there will be no shortage of new veterans.

the lad MSN said...

Maggie   June 23 is the holiday that takes the place of Nov.11..Think thats why...   Lad

maggiemck MSN said...

This is a prime example of a good time for me to keep my opinion to myself!

les__f MSN said...

hahahahah  Maggie you made me have to go back & follow the theme............     ...but I too will follow your lead ,and not open that can........    HF&RV

oshayne MSN said...

i'm not positive about tis lad but i believe the June holiday in quebec is a replacement for the august holiday i believe all othe rprovinces have.   in ontario it's called 'simcoe day'.   now i do believe all other provinces have a holiday in august but have different titles for the day. les and maggie can confirm this in relation to bc and sask. i do know alberta has a holiday in august.   as for remembrance day, keep in mind it's not only quebec that doesn't respect it as a holiday, ontario also does not recognize it as well.   shame on both.

maggiemck MSN said...

Saskatchewan does have the first monday in August as a holiday (known here as...the August long weekend) and new this (coming) year is Saskatchewan Day in February.
