TRAGEDY

The bridge collapse at St.Paul was a shame. They came close to losing 50 children in one school bus. (Thank you God that didn't happen.) For six years the Bush autocracy has been cutting funding for infrastructure to pay to send young men and women to get killed. He also cut down the inspectors. Overpasses and bridges in the U.S. carry a tremendous load of heavy traffic every day. Inspections are necessary unlike here in Quebec where we know they are going to fall down in a few years because of th graft during construction.        Ed

Hi Ed..Had to get my two cents in here.Montreal is a joke when it comes to our roads, overpasses and bridges.Fridays Gazette Aug,3 Page A3.trucks weighing from 10 tonnes to 20 tonnes.Anything around 13 tonnes should be in the same category.Well apparently a Montreal city bus is 13 tonnes with OUT PASANGERS.Buses are still going to travel on this over pass Henry Bourassa an pie 1X blvds I assume with passangers ?? We have already had a disaster last September I hate to say it I am sure there could be another.I would like to know where our tax $$$$ go.We in Quebec are the highest taxed in North America.Didn't they say that the loto would help to pay for roads and over passes??.All the gambling that goes on here where does that money go.I feel better now lol. It is a scary thought DeeDee,..........and only now is it surfacing about the dangers,....I suspect that is one of the reasons why ,.they are eliminating the Turcot Interchange and a lot of the Bonaventure Expressway too,...... There were some interesting articles in this morning 's Gazette,.all relative to the overpass thing........ Road design moving from elevation Now that the problem of crumbling roadways is out in the open, it's time to rethink road design... Cracks warn of lurking dangers Better watch where you drive Background: Through the cracks ...the fellow who talks of the elevated hwys,.as having been built to accomodate the automobile age..........it's a good article explaining how Modernising the elevated roads would be.etc etc ,.Now they will replace those roads with a lower version:                                                                            HF&RV

Yes, Les. With all the problems that Quebec alone is looking at, with the concrete cracking and the steel in the bridges rusting is another example of Bush neglecting things again. What a F........G bunch of crap. This site is getting a little scary with the ignorance of some people. Unfortunately I can't say that without some of you seeing it as an insult so I will not mention politics again. As for the religion, I did not bring it up. Bill started the thread over the Latin Mass. I joined the discussion along with others with a few simple facts that I know being so deeply involved in the Church. No one has posted anything argumentive. Every one is stating how things work in their Church or how things were in Verdun years ago. A simple discussion of facts. How this can upset you I don't know. I have two very close buddies who are dead against Churches. Oddly enough, I took a course with one of them at McGill concerning pet peeves amd how to change things. His side was how Churches are destroying humanity. You can image what my side was. But we both enjoyed it and still meet at Nick's for breakfast twice per week. I don't care what others think of religion. It's between each individual and God. P.S. I admire Bill for bringing up the Latin Mass thread. I found out through this that there many others out there who are supporters of the Church. P.S. The Church on Richard street in Verdun still has an Anglican Mass completely in Latin every Sunday.                               Ed

I belong to the Royal Canadian Legion. Two of the most important rules of membership are that cannot talk of politics and religion in the clubhouse. It works very well. I have my own opinions on politics and generally express them in the form of "Letters to the Editor". It is a lot of fun and its quite rewarding if someone responds with a contrary (and obviously ill informed) opinion. I don't think that Verdun Connections is the proper forum for politics and character bashing.   Gord Gibbons Brampton, Ontario

Hi Les! Re; "GOOD RULE." (referring to NO religious discussion or NO Politics  at the Legion. or on the V.C. Site!) I disagree with 'stifling' (as 'Archie' used to say) any opinions, cause that's what fuels the site! Yes, Remembering Verdun' is more of a priority, but 'variety is the spice of life.'  There were many PRO's and CONS with living in Verdun in the  20's, 30's, 40's and 50's, as the V.C. Site has revealed over the years. (Olde timers and their parents era) As for 'The Big Picture'  (History) concerning Verdun, Montreal, Canada, it's other Provinces and the U.S.A. with regards to Politics and Religions, they both have had the most impact, many times NOT  always in the best interests of the citizenry on both sides of the Border. The younger members need to see and hear it ALL! Keep the interesting RANTS and OPINIONS going on the site. Good stimulation and sometimes quite educational! Keep the olde Verdun pictures flowing too! Great photos. Let's  keep FREEDOM of SPEECH on Verdun Connections. Sez Victah

MNormally I would agree,as I can & like spirited opinions,...but I also appreciate that many others who surf by,.may continue on,.....if they see a board dominated by something other than it's Title Suggests......     but  alittle diversion once in  a while I agree is good,...& fun,.......but if it starts to lead everyone to an argumentative feeling ,evertime they get on,.then we have to show some manners in respecting the many who do not want to hear Politics or Religion,...... Don't forget ,as I've mentioned before People sought out this site ,Not the other way around ,..So they must have been looking for or wanting a Verdun 'fix' of sorts....That's our common denominator: and I think we've done well to Try to be all we can be for all the members,.... If we stop something ,(for what we believe,...and we get lots of email with suggestions...some we can't print......hahahaha) but if we stop something a topic or thread,.we have babies out there who feel the need to scream 'Censorship'........if we don't then we have an uncontrolled, and aimless internet site ,.that will soon fill with all kinds of stuff. i kjnow we are all adults ,.no one ever suggested we were not,...but to use an analogy I used to use during sales training sessions,......        "A ship doesn't leave Port,..and get half way out to sea,.and then the Captain,.or the NAvigator says,......Well Where the F--- do you want to go now?            hahahahah   the Ship in this case is Verdun Connections ,.and like real ships leaving port ,it set out knowing where it wanted to head,.......and not just zipping around all over.......It's direction was to provide a safe place where many could revisit the past & make some new Connections,..or make new friends,...& relive times gone by,.or reminice about the City we all grew up in , and obviously still care about,..and everyone's experience is neat to hear about,........and find the old pictures that's cool stuff too,.......and getting harder & harder to find new stuff to post,...but everything we do post that has a relevamnce to Verdun/Montreal /Quebec,..or any of Our upbringing's is always sparking someones memory banks and hopefully ,sparks them to want to add ther version of a story from their past. We can all debate & love to do it,........but this site has been growing constantly,..and most were not looking for a place to discuss the two topics mentioned...R & P,.........  So I'm sure we will all veer to the left or right ,.as we are not Mandated to speak only of one subject,.......and that's cool,..but expressing the thought that we maybe should come 'back on course' is the sign of Good Navigators,..who did leave Port with a particular destination in mind,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and not wandering aimlessly............Which for many years now has Worked reasonably well.................... but I'm also cool with a little in your face sparring too./...........hahahahah That's what I like about Real Verdun Types / Characters / they call a spade a spade,........without stamping our feet ,......and taking our ball & going home,.....pssssssst let's start another site,.....where we can really talk about people.................hahahahahahha                              Have Fun & Remember Verdun

This is my last word on the subject. The reason politics and religion is taboo in taverns and the Legion is because people are drinking and it gets out of control. The people on this site are sober and sensible. The people involved are simply stating opinions. Apparently for some people this is wrong. You cannot discuss politics without being against somebody. That's how politics works. I'm sorry that people are displeased because I don't like George Bush but as Victah says we should have the right to say it. That's not character bashing. It's the people not involved in the discussion that are complaining. For example the people discussing Churches are talking sensibly but people who don't believe in religion are asking us not to discuss it. Why? If you feel guilty about not going to Church that's your problem but don't try to shut the rest of us up. If Maggie or Les say stop it I will respect that without any ill feelngs.                     Ed

That's a great analogy Les but a captain has to always be prepared for bad weather also.  Every site has its own culture and style which is flavoured by the people who inhabit them.  There is room for many styles of sites as there are makes of cars--- each used for different purposes-- the safe family van, the sexy convertible, the practical 4 x 4, the used Ford that always breaks down, etc.    Cyberspace has lots of room for everyone, and sometimes it's important not to be judgemental.  Most of us are strangers here so members should not take things personally and should respect everyone's opinion.  I watched the posts on the religious and political arguments and found all the comments interesting both pro and con.  Hearing members' views, made me understand who they are and where they are coming from---we connected in a way also. In the end, you knew that everyone walked away without changing anyone's mind to their way of thinking.   Of course members know what this site is all about but human nature is such that it has a need to share views and events of the day, and as Victah said, even learn things through discussion.  People and their experiences have taught me more than I have ever learned in books.  So sometimes you have to navigate that ship into a storm, hold it and steer it into fair weather before it sinks.  You've managed to do that all these years.   As for me, sometimes I like to drive a sexy convertible and feel the wind whip my hair and sometimes I just like to drive in a safe comfortable family van with a mug of Tim Horton's coffee.  Get it?  :-)

les__f MSN said...

Again I agree, & disagree ,....but that;s the nature of the beast,.no one here is against anything,....just somewhat more focused,(not to be confused with narrow minded),.we have headed into the storms as you mentioned,.and so far we have come out the other side ,reasonably stronger than heading into it: Steering the most direct course is a challenge at the best of times, and rougher weather dictates evasive action at times,....but only to keep the 'safety' of all aboard,...sometimes some are flung over the side ,(or jump) when the weather gets rough,.but they are usually comforted by their lifeboat, but the big ship still sails on,...........and we don't have a Palm Tree up here on the Bridge,.that we'd be worried about being tossed overboard,..we trust all aboard,..........and will try to keep them all Having Fun & Rememberring Verdun................                  whistle the theme from Gilligans Island here......  hahahahahahah     Thanks for the input,..................Btw: we are somewhat proud to have been the Shipyard for the Launching of many other Vessels (Venues) That means Connections were made..................................and to quote old GW,................   Mission Accomplished...........                                        Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Les, I have no idea where you're coming from. To say I amn trying to pigeon hole people who don't think like me is 100% opposite to what I said. For your information someone did ask me to stop bringing up religion. It was Winnie and as I pointed out I was not the one who brought it up and he did use the word religion not organized religion. Thanks Joey for replying.  I'm always interested in other writer's experiences and work. I usually learn from them.   1.  Like you I haven't had much time to post either but I've been on vacation last 2 weeks so they let me stay up late.   2.  My novel is taking longer than expected  because I'm also working on a collection of short stories.  I've been lucky in that my short stories and creative non-fiction have been published in literary journals and anthologies so this long piece of work is difficult because the approach is different.  I've had to drop being a perfectionist looking for the perfect sentence, para, before moving on, or the book would never get finished.  Once I could free myself, I just wrote---freefall.  So the chapters are like your index cards and they'll need shuffling on the next draft.   I also have some background in journalism and PR and at one point almost took over a friend's freelance buisness but it wasn't the kind of writing I wanted to do, so dropped that.   3.  Hmmmm.  Don't know docu-faction.  Is that similar to Capote's In Cold Blood?   4.  I mentioned McKee's seminar in New York because it's not far from Ottawa  if you wanted to check it out.   5.  I hear  you about the relatives.  It's another reason among many why I'm here!   6.  I know there is software out there but I just use good old Word.  I can't be confined to someone else's structure.  You?   7.  A trilogy!  Yikes!  What's the book about?  Or can you say?   8.  What are your thoughts about the marketing hype for the Potter books especially the last one?   Will check you out the next full moon.

Police call 5 deaths in northwest Calgary a 'domestic homicide' Insp. Frank Reuser carries an unharmed one-year-old girl out of a Calgary house where the bodies of three adults and two children were found Wednesday. (CBC-TV) Three adults and two children found dead in a northwest Calgary home Wednesday were victims of a "domestic homicide," the city's police chief said. During a police press conference at 4 p.m. MT, Chief Rick Hanson said the victims were two women and a man, all in their 30s, and two girls, aged four and six. Four were members of the same family, while the fifth was a female tenant, Hanson said. He did not say how the victims died. "As it stands right now, the preliminary indications are this is a domestic homicide," Hanson said. "Of course, we'll be looking at any other options that could possibly be involved, but we are saying at this point we are not looking for any suspects, and there is no current risk to the community." Names of the five individuals have not yet been released, as police are still contacting next of kin. None of the adults involved were known to police, he said. "We checked our records, and we have not been able to identify or locate any information that would indicate that we responded to that house for a domestic or any other type of complaint," Hanson said. The bodies were found around 10 a.m. MT. A one-year-old girl was found crying in a crib, unharmed. Calgary police Insp. Frank Reuser said the girl is in the care of social services and doing "very well." At least six police cars and an ambulance rushed to the home in the 5500 block of Dalhart Hill N.W., in the community of Dalhousie. Kevin Brookwell, of the Calgary Police Service, told CBC News that a family member or friend went to the house early Wednesday to pick up one of the children for school and couldn't get a response. The person went into the house, then called police, Brookwell said. Reuser, a 35-year veteran of the force who was visibly upset by the events, said the bodies were found throughout the home and none of the deaths was from natural causes. The major crimes unit has been dispatched to the scene, the police spokesman said.
