Jimmy Mann was a year behind me at Verdun High. Nice guy. Last I heard (a couple of years ago now) he is still playing with the NHL "Old timers".

Maggie, Thanks for the new names. Robert Picard is listed on the Legends site but shows that he was born in Montreal but of course that could be Verdun. I will not add him to the list until I have confirmation of him been born in Verdun. Maggie, do you know on what street  Jimmy Mann  lived, Woodland, Egan, Joseph or 3rd ave. Guy

guy5479 MSN said...

Maggie, OK, I got the answer from Metalman, he was born on Egan.   Guy

Guy, click on the link below to see a photo of 4 young VHS students that travelled to Russia for a hockey tournament. Jimmy Mann is the tallest one. I believe he was in grade 8 at the time and was injured in one of the games over there. http://www.geocities.com/thinslice1/then.html

The players or coaches do not necessarily require to be born in Verdun to qualify as a Verdunite. They need only to have lived in Verdun but I want to make sure that the information we have is accurate as it will be kept in the SHGV archives. Guy

Hi Guy,

What about Blair MacKasey? He went to VCHS and lived on Godin (right where Monteith ran tinto Godin - his house was right next to the lane). Here is a bio of his son:

full name is Blair John Mackasey ... birthday is Nov. 4, 1983 … son of Blair and Debbie Mackasey ... father is the Director of Pro Scouting for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild ... mother is a Teacher’s Aid in a high school in Montreal ... both parents attended McGill University in Montreal ... father played major junior hockey in Canada and three seasons professionally, appearing in one NHL game for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1976-77 season ... has an older sister Andrea in graduate school at Concordia and two younger siblings, a sister Erin and a brother Dave ... enjoys music, movies and golf … majoring in economics.

Blair played one game in the NHL, and he has done a lot for Hockey Canada. Anyways, he played the one game and he is from Verdun, so that qualifies him for your list of hockey players or coaches from Verdun that worked in the NHL..

Here is a video of Blair Sr. opining about hockey:

Les, The Gump was born in Verdun on the 14th of May 1929 in the point and played for the Verdun Cyclones at age 17 from 1946 to 1948, a Rangers farm team. However, I have no information that he ever lived in Verdun so he would not qualify. The response has been so overwelming that I probably will  make different categories such as players, coaches, players/ coaches, players that played in Verdun only, however, I will have to draw a line somewhere. Also I want to double check the information I am receiving to have a credible list. I will cetainly post my list when completed. Guy

BrownBlvd, I have checked the Wikipedia site and there is a Blair Mackasey born 13 December 13, 1955 in Hamilton Ont. so this must be the father, He is also listed on the Hockey Legends site as Blair David MacKasey and played 1 NHL team with the Toronto Maple Leafs..  Blair John MacAsey is not shown on wither sites. Are you sure he played pro hockey and if so with whom. Guy

Hi Guy,   The Blair Mackasey that I knew was the son of Bryce Mackasey, MP who lived in Verdun. I believe he had a brother Brian and they went to VCHS. I do think I remember Mike having and older brother,...but not sure about a youner one,........ but I am fairly certain that he is the nephew of Bryce....                                                        I'll keep looking for more info:                                                      HF&RV

Hi Guy,

I was referring to Blair Mackasey who was born in 1955. He may have been born in Hamilton, but he grew up in Verdun right on Godin probably a few hundred feet from MetalMan's house on Riverview. Apparently his son (born in 1983) plays for the Princeton hockey team. I believe that Blair, the dad, graduated from VCHS in 1972 (he was a year older than me).

If others want to see the Blair Mackasey I was referring to, cut and paste this link to the YouTube video into your browser.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZMVR4cEuZ8

That is defnitely Blair from Godin.

Also, this site below has Blair's picture in it (definitely him again) and it mentions that, although he was born in Hamilton, his home town was Verdun. It also shows that he played only 1 NHL game for Toronto on 5 October, 1976.

http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1975/75055.html

Blair played not only hockey but also two years of minor-league baseball in Montreal Expos farm system. His first season was spent at Jamestown, N.Y., and his second season was at Cocoa Beach, Fla.

I hope these links help.

Hi again, Guy.

I don't know if Blair Mackasey from Godin was related to Bryce Mackasey from Moffat (and also the Federal Liberal policitian who also owned Trenholme Printing in Verdun as well as the sport goods store on Wellington - my father bough me or my brother a bicycle there in the 1960s). You mentioned Brian Mackasey in your question to me, but I think that you intended to write Bryce Mackasey.

Bryce Mackasey also had a son, whose name escapes me, born sometime in the mid 1950s who also went to VCHS, I believe but I might have that wrong.

Also, it states that he was born in Westmount, but I know that he grew up in Montreal, just like Coach Bim said.

Sorry got carried away with my last post ,& forgot to ad this info on Rick Lapointe,.from Victoria BC..............    Rick Paul Lapointe Rick Lapointe was a mobile defenceman with a good shot from the point who could also play an abrasive style in his own zone. He played nearly 700 games for five clubs in an NHL career that spanned eleven years. Born in Victoria, B.C., Lapointe played in the BCJHL with the Nanaimo Clippers before excelling on the WHL's Victoria Cougars. In 1974-75 he scored 70 points in 67 games, represented Canada at the World Junior Championships, and was taken fifth overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the Amateur Draft. He was also named to the first all-star units in the WCJHL and the World Junior tourney. The scouts were impressed with the youngster's playmaking ability and willingness to play aggressively in his own zone. Lapointe was solid during his first two years with the mediocre Wings. After a trade to the Philadelphia Flyers in February 1977, he settled into a more defensive role and put up excellent plus/minus numbers. Prior to the 1979-80 season, Lapointe was dealt to the St. Louis Blues for Blake Dunlop. He solidified the club's blueline but was traded to the Quebec Nordiques for veteran forward Pat Hickey in August 1982. The veteran spent more of his time with the Nord's AHL farm team. In 1983-84, he was a standout on the Fredericton Express and named to the league's first all-star team. Lapointe was a veteran role player on the L.A. Kings for two seasons before retiring in 1986.                                                             He died some years ago now,I wonder if he was related to all of these other famous Lapointe Hockey Players?????

VERDUN HOCKEY TRIVIA It is interesting to note that at the beginning of their hockey careers, Maurice Rocket Riichard and Émile Butch Bouchard both played for Verdun Maple Leafs and the Verdun Jr Maple leafs in the late 30s and early 40s.   Guy

I remember Donnie Marshall lived in Goose Village,on Forfar, while he was in the minors and his first year with the Habs. Jimmy Peters Jr. summered in Verdun as a youngster(on Egan). I think he lived in California with his mother.

Guy, if you are including players that didn't play in the NHL but played professionally you can add Mike Ortuso who played for the Swiss National Team as well as the Maine Nordiques, Bruce Mullett who played in the IHL, and I think Gary Butler had a shot with the Rangers.

Dave and Les, Yes I am including Verdunites who played professionally not only for the NHL on my list of players who were born or who lived in V erdun. I will add Mike Ortuso to my list. Thanks for your input. Guy

guy5479 MSN said...

Dave and Les, I will add Mike Ortuso to my list of Verdunites on les's say so but I will wait for more conclusive evidence for Bruce Mullett and Gary Butler. The HockeyDB.com site shows Bruce Mullett born in St John's Nfld and played for the Montreal Junior Canadians, no mention of Verdun. As for Gary Butler, his name does not appear on any of the 4 sites I consulted. Guy

Correction: (Messages 91 and 92) On both your say so. (Davee and Les). Sorry about that. Guy

Hi,

Jimmy Peters Sr. is my uncle and Jimmy Peters Jr. is my cousin.

My uncle played for the Montreal Canadians, the Detroit Red Wings and I believe the Philadelphia team. He passed away last year in Detroit, where he lived for many years.

The last I heard of my cousin, he was teaching/coaching hockey in Flagstaff, Arizona.

I have some pictures that I will post if I can find them.

Guy, Bruce Mullett played hockey for Norman Dawe Memorial Association, Verdun RedWings, Verdun Maple Leafs, Montreal JRs, and VHS school team.  I went to High School with him and he attended Riverview elementary.  I think he lived on Moffatt.  Anyway he definately was a Verdun lad.

OK Dave, thats good enough for me, he goes on my list of Verdunites who played Hockey professionally. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Guy

Maggie, Thanks for the hockey site on Montreal Habs Goalies. I have added it to my favorites. While on the subject, there is an article in todays La Presse that Patrick Roy's fatther, Michel Roy, has written the biography of his son. Although it is in french, it may be published in English. The name of the biography is "Le Guerrier", translation "The Worrior". Guy

les__f MSN said...

Guy ,.although there has been speculation that Maurice lived in Verdun ( I have never seen this confirmed),.but he did come highly recommended to the Habs,.by Arthur Therrien apparently after having been seen playing hockey on an outdoor rink in Bordeaux,........    just thought I'd add this little bit of info, .for what it's worth
Maurice Richard.
Maurice Richard played his full eighteen-season career with the Montreal Canadiens, retiring in 1960. Tommy Gorman, who managed the Canadiens when Richard joined the team, wrote this note on the back of the photo: "Maurice (The Rocket) Richard, probably the greatest player I have ever signed. He was recommended by Art Therien, of Verdun, and did not cost Les Canadiens one dollar. We scouted Richard in an open air rink out in Bordeaux."

guy5479 MSN said...

Les, I mentioned previously that Maurice Richard and Butch Bouchard both played for the Verdun Maple Leafs at the beginning of their careers, late 30s, beginning 40s. That must be where the rumor came from but there is no evidence that they actually lived in Verdun. Incidently, we French Canadians considered the Rocket the best all around player that ever played in the NHL while the English Canadians considered Gordie Howe the best player. I wonder who is right. That should start a debate. Guy

maggiemck MSN said...

Guy, could you tell me where I could get a copy French) of Patrick Roy's Biography?

les__f MSN said...

Guy , I serious.le Rocketly doubt ,that Canadians ,.regardless of being French or English, could possibly be segragated so finely ,as to being Either/ Or, Please tell me you don't believe that...........Yikes , I just watched the Habs game the other night (which as much as I hate to admit ,those FN leafs, beat the Habs) but in the stands were many many leaf sweaters ,could these same people ,who probably not even alive in Maurice's hey-day,..be anti Maurice fans......................  I think not my friend,............  And I am an English Canadian ,...but I have always been an avid Habs ( Montreal Canadiens Fan)....and as a kid ,I took great pleasure in putting a Gordie Howe Hockey Card in the spokes of a bicycle,.........but would never think of such blasphemy ,by doing anything like that with a Montreal Canadiens Card of any player (least of all ,the Rocket).........hahahahhaa   Canada (nor the hockey world ,) was ever divided by French / English ,and certainly not by the two players mentioned,...........(albeit) I have no doubt that those Hockey Arguements still go on today,..they have to be measured in different lights,...........there's no dispute that playing 5 decades & amassing the point totals he did, that Gordie Howe is with out a doubt an Incredible hockey Player\.....................nor can anyone deny that the Pride & Fierceness & will to win ,wasn't possesed by the Rocket Maurice Richard,.......as I recently heard quoted by Ted Lindsay ........the Rocket was the most effective & feared player from the Blue line in............  ( quite a statement ,from a Wings player who played with as much heart as both these two players: I also have never liked the division of (what amounts ,to nothing more thanvery Highly Paid athletes playing a Game)  by language,.......I played with kids of every language on the outdoor rinkd in Verdun, & Just Really wanted to Win,...........no matter who the other team was,......  The same as I always supported the Canadiens,......regardless of who they played,..and if a favourite player was ever traded from the Habs, then they were now the enemy & I would have lost my support for them.........(including Guy) when he played for the Rangers,........Yikes ............language of origin ,should not ever be the reason to support or not support a player or team...... I find now in this day & age I have a hard time even supporting any one team or player,.since they all make obscenely huge salary's to play a game ,we all loved,& would have played for Pride Alone,............that Crest on your Chest ,.should be ,more than enough to make you want to win.......... but this language barrier is now threatning to rear it's ugly head again ( as reported by that fool from lapresse)......please Gordie was liked & admired by many & so was the Rocket,.......by fans of all languages.........' BTW: we should all Hate the leafs ..just because...................hahahahahha      I think most of us Verdunites (Verduners) all loved the Rocket......\ but I do wish I had kept some of those Howe & Hull cards from the bicycle spokes of the early 60's .........................YIKES !!!     hahahahahahahha           Have Fun & Remember Verdun,

Maggie, Here is the photo of Patrick Roy's father, Michel Roy, the author,  showing the biography of his son. Despite his age, Michel Roy who appears quite young on the photo has had quite a career, he was the Quebec delegate in Chicago, under-minister (sous-ministre) of tourisme, siinger, guitarist, cinema stage-hand (monteur au cinéma) and now council president of Telefilm Canada. A translation will no doubt follow and should be available across Canada at your local bookstore. Guy

oshayne MSN said...

well guy there may be some validity to what you say about the language division among canadians regarding the howe / richard popularity.   but english quebecers, now that's another thing, they loved their rocket.   my take on this, both equally as great, two different style hockey players.   and a little side note: i hate the leafs, just because...LOL

Concerning my list of Hockey players from Verdun wich I posted on the 24th of September 2007, included on that list is Blair MacKasey. In the currant issue of our local newspaper, Cités Nouvelles, it is mentioned that Blair now lives in Beaconsfield and is now a professional recruiter for the Minnesota Wilds since January 2006. He was previously wih Equipe Canada Junior team for 4 years. He has 2 girls, 26 and 20 years old and 2 boys 24 and 16. He was originally from Hamilton Ont. and moved to Verdun when 6 years old. He moved to Beaconsfield when he was 20 and hjs lived in the West-island ever since. I wonder if he is related to Bryce MacKasey, the politician also from Verdun. It is always nice to hear about old Verdunites.   Enclosed is my currant List Of Former Verdun players (41) along with a photo of Blair wich also appeared in the newspaper:
