LaSalle and Hickson, 1957 - 2005

App. 50 years separates these two photos of LaSalle Boul and Hickson St.. Not much differaence except the models of the cars.
Hickson street was named in honor of Sir Joseph Hickson, former general manager of the Grand Truck Railway and owner of the farm through wich the street crossed.

Les, I will post similar photos from time to time of before and after of areas in Verdun wich we have in our archives at the SHGV. As you know, I always carry my camera with me and take  pictures of interesting subjects when I go to Verdun. However, I am taking a summer break and will resume my trips to Verdun in September. I am working on several projects for our quarterly revue wich I will share with VC members. Guy

Guy, If you want an interesting shot, I mentioned earlier that Mayor Allen, after whom Allen Street is named used to live at 99 Troy. Street. It is an amazing house with domed ceilings inside and carved figures. But the carriage out back still stands and is probably the last vestige of horse stables anywhere in Verdun. Ed

Ed, OK I will take pictures of that house on my next trip to Verdun. This should be a very interesting subject. Guy

Ed, Here is a picture of  Mayor J. Allen who was mayor of  Verdun 1896 - 1899 and 1907 - 1915 after whom Allen Street was named. He was the founder of Troy Laundry Co. Ltd, 3858 Allen ave. and of the British American Dye Works, 3856 Allen ave. per enclosed photo.  Notice the Verdun Motor Boat Club (VMBC) was situated on the river bank. There was another Allen who was mayor, Ch. A. Allen, 14th mayor of Verdun, 1929 - 1933 who may have been related. Guy

Are those water towers in the picture of the Verdun Motor boat club?

The one on the right is the water tower of the old Troy laundry. They had giant boilers for hot water.  Ed

Guy, If you drive up Troy street to the end and turn left you will be in front of the house in the extreme right of your photo. It is still there. There was some kind of a scandal with Mayor Allen. He refused to pay water tax because he said his water was being drawn from the river. Supposedly they found that not true.         Ed

Ed, Enclosed is a picture I took recently of 99 Troy St. This is the address where you said former mayor of Verdun J. Allen lived. I have checked the 1915 Lovell directory and his address is shown as 126  LaSalle Road. I will check this address on my next trip to Verdun. Where did you get the 99 Troy St. address. Guy The bottom flat is 99 Troy Street.
