CVT Transmission

Any members familiar with the CVT Transmission. The system operates with a metallic belt and variable diameter pulleys. These transmissions are used mainly on Skidoos and small cars. This system seems to me to be a very smooth and efficient system for automatic transmissions as the pulleys  operate automatically according to the engine demand. This subject may not  necessarely be appropriate for this site but based on some past postings, some members may have an opinion on the subject. My concern would be the life span of the pulleys, belt and labor cost for replacement.
The enclosed article mentions that a company in Quebec  is developing this system to be used on heavy duty vehicules.

Hello Guy5479................Does the   CV stand for Constant Velocity? If so the design of this transmission,.must be very similar mechanically to what we refer to as a CVJ ,...Constant Velocity Joint,.......these have been being used for many years now ,.in most front wheel drive cars,...I suspect ,it something along the same lines..............???                    Just an Opinion ,........................          HF&RV

Thanks Guy ,......here's an excerpt from 'How Stuff Works site' Some say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But the continuously variable transmission (CVT), which Leonardo da Vinci conceptualized more than 500 years ago and is now replacing planetary automatic transmissions in some automobiles, is one old dog that has definitely learned a few new tricks. Indeed, ever since the first toroidal CVT patent was filed in 1886, the technology has been refined and improved. Today, several car manufacturers, including General Motors, Audi, Honda and Nissan, are designing their drivetrains around CVTs   .......It seems old Leonardo dreamed up this idea a little before ,Bombardier. hahahahaha.........................................    I notice Toyota isn't mentioned ,.and they lead the pack these days,....   Also:   For Fresco,..you might like this ,on the same page as the CVT transmission,........there's a film about the Roswell Incident,......... Roswell UFO - There has been much controversy around the alleged 1947 UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico. Learn more about it in this video on HowStuffWorks. Guy, Sounds like the old 'powerglide transmission' in the early 50's Chevvies. It operated on a series of belts that were adjustable when it started to slip.   Ed
