I think it's June isn't it when the Nat opens again for the Summer,............it seems not long ago we were speaking of this ,............as we have many times,..but the natatorium was a large part of all our lives,.........

History is important,.and I hope we don't bore you with repetition,.but we do have many members ,.who I beleive like to reminice (sp?) how Verdun,........and So at the real risk of repeating somethings,.......I do it anyway...........hahahahha History and Heritage Buildings - Natatorium An art deco structure. At the time of its 1930 construction, the Natatorium was not only considered to be the largest public pool outside of Qu챕bec, but was the first of its kind. It can host 1,150 bathers at once. Holy s&%t ,....I Remember that very well,..I was standing right behind old Magic Tom with a few of my friends, and I heard old Tom,.refer to the kids running around as Little Bast&rds...............hahahahaha Not on the Air of course ,but it was funny ,.............and I suspect 1100 + Verdun Kids ,might be referred to that,.quite Correctly.........hahahahahaha Now that's a good memory prompt
Here's old Magic Tom Auburn........................................ Magic Tom Auburn Thomas Rochford Aubum was bom July 7, 1917 - the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventeenth year of this century. His father died in the flu epidemic of that year, leaving his mother to raise Tom and two other children. At the age of three, Tom went to live with an aunt, and they moved to Verdun, Quebec, when Tom was about ten.
In childhood Tom purchased a twenty-five cent book, "Thurston 's Card Tricks"; a copy of Dunninger's "Popular Magic", was given to him, and then scarlet fever struck. It was a serious case and a long period of quarantine was followed by even longer period of convalescence, bed rest, no visitors, and only the two books for company. Tom studied avidly. He learned some manipulation and other magic and put on his first public show at the age of fifteen At first he performed in a mask, then as he gained confidence the masked magician gave way to the "Great Auburn", and eventually "Magic Tom" Auburn. His reception was so encouraging that he proceeded to book every engagement he could secure, partly for the income, but mainly to improve his technique by constantly performing.

Les, Magic Tom was on French TV on a regular basis as he was bilingal and very much apreciated by all. This is the first time I hear that he lived in Verdun. Another piece of Verdun history wich I will add to the SHGV archives. Do you know when he lived in Verdun as I will check the address in Lovells directory. Guy
Les, Since Magic Tom was 10 when he moved to Verdun and he was born in 1917, I checked Lovells directory for year 1929-1930. There is only one Auburn listed: Mrs B. Auburn, Widow 3758 Ethel Verdun This must be where he lived with his aunt mentioned in your message. Guy
I remember as a kid roller skating from Crawford Park to the Nat. Kids could get in free in the early morning. I loved going on the roof after swimming and eating chips which I crunched up in the bag before I ate them. Great memories. Does anyone know the history of the old Stone House on Ville LaSalle Blvd. in Crawford Park?
Hello Finngirl10,.......................... the Rooftop,.was part of the deal of going to the Nat ,for sure,..no visit could possibly be complete,.without a trip after swimming up to te Roof,.where a bag of chips was in order ( and we'd drop a few chips to some waitng friends still in the pool area.....hahahaha) and of course the Nat rooftop restaurant actually had one of te Best Toasted Style HotDogs around,..............Remember those flat buns especially made for the grill irons .................mmmmmmmmmmm really good,.......... as for the History of te old Stone Hous on Lasalle Blvd,.......We have a resident expert in Guy ,.who knows much of the history of te Maison St Dizier (or something like that),.........He's poated lot's of info on this building,........ also many of te members have at times attended some sort of club in the old stone house,....I think my brother went to scouts or sea cadets or something like that,........ ...................................................................have fun & Remember Verdun
