funnies....or not!

Subject: funnies....or not!

Wife: "What are you doing?"
Husband : Nothing.

Wife : "What do you mean, nothing...? You've been reading our marriage certificate for an hour now."

Husband : "I was looking for the expiration date."

----------------------------------------------------------------
Wife : "Do you want dinner?"

Husband : "Sure! What are my choices?"

Wife : "Yes and no."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wife: "You always carry my photo in your wallet. Why?"

Hubby: "When there is a problem, no matter how impossible, I look at your picture and the problem disappears."

Wife: "You see how miraculous and powerful I am for you?"

Hubby: "Yes! I see your picture and ask
myself what other problem can there be greater than this one?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Stress Reliever Girl: "When we get married, I want to share all your worries, troubles and lighten your burden."

Boy: "It's very kind of you, darling, but I don't have any worries or troubles."

Girl: "Well that's because we aren't married yet."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Son: "Mom, when I was on the bus with Dad this morning, he told me to give up my seat to a lady."

Mom: "Well, you have done the
right thing."

Son: "But mom, I was sitting on daddy's lap."

A newly married man asked his wife, "Would you have married me if my father hadn't left me a fortune?"

"Honey," the woman replied sweetly, "I'd have married you, NO MATTER WHO LEFT YOU A FORTUNE!"

Father to son after exam: "Let me see your report card."

Son: "My friend just borrowed it. He wants to scare his parents."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Girl to her boyfriend: One kiss and I'll be yours forever.

The guy replies: "Thanks for the early warning."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

A wife asked her husband: "What do you like most in me, my pretty face or my sexy body?"

He looked at her from head to toe and replied: "I like your sense of humor."

................................

It's the birthday of the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy (books by this author), born in Brookline, Massachusetts (1917). In 1960, he was the youngest person ever elected president of the United States, and many people saw him as a symbol of freshness and youth. Part of his personal story was that during World War II, he was serving on a ship that got torpedoed, and he saved several of his crewmen from drowning. He towed one man in the water for three miles to safety.

But something that almost no one knew about John F. Kennedy was that he had suffered from numerous medical problems for most of his life. He had Addison's disease, which required frequent injections of cortisone. He also suffered from mysterious digestive problems and terrible back pains. He had to wear a corset-like back brace at all times.

Kennedy was in terrible pain and didn't complain about his back or his stomach problems while he campaigned for a House seat in 1946. In 1952, he ran for the U.S. Senate, and he was one of the few Democrats to win a race in a year when Eisenhower swept a lot of Republicans into office. But soon after the race, X-rays showed that parts of his spine had collapsed. He couldn't tie his own shoes or walk without crutches. He finally decided to try a risky operation to fuse his vertebrae. He fell into a coma during the procedure and was given last rites. He recovered, but had to spend six months in bed.

The surgery made it possible for Kennedy to walk, but he could not bend his back forward or backward at all, and could barely turn himself over in bed or sit in a low chair. The media reported that he had recovered completely. During the election of 1960, Nixon operatives apparently tried to break into Kennedy's doctor's office to steal his medical records, but the records were stored under a code name, so they were never found. No one but his closest family members and his doctors knew of his true condition.

Immigration

This should apply to the Canadian immigration policies as well I think.
Second Avenue.

The year is 1907, one hundred years ago Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on
Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes
here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us,
he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it
is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed,
or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's
becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an
American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says
he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for
but one language here, and that is the English language... and we
have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the
American people."

Montreal in October

My brother and I will be visiting Montreal in October and staying at
the Queen Elizabeth Hotel from the 5th to the 9th. After looking over
our old haunts in Verdun, we want to see as much as possible of the
mountain. Other than that we are open. Any suggestions for the
limited amount of time left?

Turcot Yards

They have started to demolish the Turcot Yards at the corner of Angrignon and Pullman. The building behind pictures 1, 2 and 3 was completely demolished. I think they may keep the front building on Pullman since they did not touch it. Perhaps they will demolish the other old  blue roof  receiving and shippping docks in the other 2 pictures. I am curious to know what they plan on doing with this stragically situated land. It is cetainly taking a lot of time to develop this area.

Did anyone remember or know of Holly Duncan?  I just received news that she passed away from complications of cancer, service is in Innisfil, ON. We used to hang out. She was a unique individual. I thought at that time she had a great vocabulary compared to the rest of us.
May she be remembered well, and may she rest in peace.

City unveils new public transit plan

The Gazette/ Presse Canadienne

Published: Thursday, May 17, 2007

The city of Montreal delivered a new public transportation plan today which calls for a tram system, the return of tolls on bridges and highways, 400 kilometres of bike paths, and new metro stations on the eastern part of the island.

In all, the plan includes 21 projects.

The city is counting on new sources of revenue to fund these projects, including the tolls, which  would bring about $300 million in revenue, Mayor Gerald Tremblay said

The transportation plan will be submitted to the city and agglomeration councils in June, followed by a public consultation in June. Tremblay said he expects to adopt the plan in June.

Legendary musician Bo Diddley performs at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York, in this file photo from Aug. 2, 2006. The famed guitarist has been placed in intensive care after suffering a stroke in western Iowa, publicists said Wednesday May 16, 2007.

Bo Diddley is in intensive care after suffering a stroke in western Iowa, a publicist said Wednesday.

The 78-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was listed in guarded condition at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., said Susan Clary, a publicist for the musician's management team.

Diddley, who has a history of hypertension and diabetes, was hospitalized Sunday following a concert in Council Bluffs in which he acted disoriented, she said.

Tests indicated that the stroke affected the left side of his brain, impairing his speech and speech recognition, Clary said.

Clary said she has no other details on Diddley's condition or how long he would be in intensive care.

Diddley, with his black glasses and low-slung guitar, has been an icon in the music industry since he topped the R&B charts with "Bo Diddley" in 1955. His other hits include "Who Do You Love," "Before You Accuse Me," "Mona" and "I'm a Man."

Diddley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was given a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1998.

    Internet Petitions

    Snopes Warning

Pass this one on to all your e-mail buddies and take the time to read
the Snopes.com article above. It is full of good advice especially
    about the "cookies."

Just a word to the wise. E-mail petitions are NOT acceptable to any
municipality. To be acceptable petitions must have a signed
    signature and full address.

Almost all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to
others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to
send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break
the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all
this type of e-mail is, to get names and "cookie" tracking info for
tele-marketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for
    their own purposes.

Any time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to "10" of your
friends, sign this petition, or you'll get good luck, or whatever, it
has either an e-mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies
and e-mails of those folks you forward to, or the host sender is
getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get
lists of "active" e-mails to use in spam e-mails, or sell to others
    that do.

Please forward this notice to others and you will be providing a good
service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting 30,000
    spam e-mails in the future.

(If you have been sending out the above kinds of email, now you know
why you get so much spam!)

I can't remember which, Danny or David hung out with my brother, Garfield. The last we knew of him is that he was in BC.

    this morning 's Gazette article:

Group wants another Expo in Montreal

    The Gazette

    Published: Tuesday, May 15, 2007

An independent group thinks Montreal can pull off the huge success of Expo 67 again for the occasion of Canada's 150th anniversary.

The group has submitted a proposal to the city of Montreal for it to hold another world's fair in 2017, to be called Expo 17.

Their plan involves using existing Expo grounds at Jean Drapeau Park, the harbourfront at Cite du Havre, as well as parts of the southwest shore of Montreal. It would involve a large-scale cleanup of the St. Lawrence River.

Drawing on surveys conducted among Expo 67 visitors, the group wants to make architecture a big part of Expo 17. Unlike Expo 67, their plan calls for pavilions that are constructed to outlast the exhibition

One of the Last Canadian WWI Soldiers

Percy Dwight Wilson dies today,..........................................see ya Percy(& Thanks)

Here's an article from a month or so ago:..but today one of the oldest Vets Dies,

    Dwight Wilson, 105

    From Saturday's Globe and Mail

    November 11, 2006 at 12:16 AM EDT

Imbued with the unquestioning patriotism that caused so many young Canadians to sign up for a far-off war they had no idea was a living hell, Percy Dwight Wilson was determined to fight for King and Country.

The fired-up farm boy from the Ontario hamlet of Vienna was so eager, in fact, that he signed on at the tender age of 15, a full three years shy of the legal minimum.

Lest recruiters think he was too young, Mr. Wilson fudged his age by a whole year. He told them he was 16.

............that was the story last Remembrance Day,.................

...............................There were some very Happy people all over the World,
as Germany officially surrendered,to old Dwight,.............and the Hell of 5 or 6 years was finally over again,...................
However the news sparked a riot in Halifax ,by over exuberant service men,.(most likely a few lunatics ,ransacking & robbing stores,.and just generally taking advantage of the situationn)..................certainly not indicative of most of the People of the Time:

    Park Theatre on Church St.

One of my colleagues at the Dawson Cultural Centre gave me an article wich appeared in the Oct. 26th 1997 edition of the Gazette on the fire at the Park theatre wich ocurred 2 weeks previously. The only victims were 7 firemen due to a collapsing wall and roof.
The theatre was converted to a TV theatre, a church, an ice-cream parlour and a music venue.
By coincidence, I was in the process of doing research on the 4 theatres that existed prior to their conversion.
The theatre opened in 1915 and once was praised as one of Canada's most beautifull theatres, was founded by S.J. Dunning. The theatre had a large balcony, a beautiful decorated lobby, a four-manual pipe organ and 1,172 seats. I saw many movies in this theatre in the 40s and 50s. It is interesting to know that a pioneer by the name of Léo.Ernest Ouimet was the first to build a theatre in Canada and perhaps in North America in 1907, named Ouimetoscope.  We have a book on the subject written by one of his descendants, at the SHGV. (in french)
The theatre also had a stage wich presented from Vaudeville acts to choirs, ballet and orchestras. Dunning preferred distributing circulars and at one time had 20,000 printed.
The article is too long to quote every interesting facts as it takes 3 pages of the Gazette written by Mark Abley and will be kept in the SHGV archives.

Population of Verdun 1876 to 1980

I have found the following information at the SHGV yesterday on the population of Verdun wich may interest some members:
    1876 Population 200
    1881       "          278
    1901       "         1898
    1911       "         11,629
    1920       "         25,674
    1925       "         34,802
    1930       "         54,911
    1935       "         60,871
    1940       "         64,314
    1945       "         74,087
    1950       "         77,986
    1955       "         82,711
    1960       "         86,233
    1965       "         88,900
