dflood64,       That is a good slide show,........the STM site use to have these pics, just as individual photos ,but I like the slide show, especially if you use the Full Screen option,.and sit back & take a tour of early to mid fifties Montreal,....... in one shot there is a streetcar just passing a parked Molson Beer truck (which actually looks surprisingly like a more modern size & look of a newer Hino Truck,. or some of the GMC that have made an appearance in the last several years,...... but back to the slides ,.you really get the 'feeling' of Montreal,......I can Remember sitting in my oldmans car ,and those were the scenes to be had, Thanks for bringing it back to Prompt our memory's ............ Seeeing we have so many new members (especially over te past year,...I think it's good we post a lot of the Montreal Pictures ,that some of may have seen ,but still appreciated,by all:                             Have Fun & Remember Verdun

I just came across this site re: LRT for Montreal,.proposed anyway,........... JMH   Fresco   Dflood64,............and other Transit ,tramway,.streetcar & rail fans................................. Check out this site if you like,.   Transport history Nothing remains of the vast urban and interurban tramway networks that once served the Greater Montreal area. At its peak, the local tramway undertaking of Montreal ran more than 1000 trams over 500 km of tracks. Between 1942 and 1958, Montreal operated a handful of modern PCC trams, numbered 3501-3518. For a long time, Montreal wavered, as it actually needed hundreds of PCCs for fleet renewal, but there was no money. In 1959, all trams were withdrawn, followed by the closure of the trolleybus network in 1966. Some say that trams and trolleybuses could not cope well with the steep gradients of many city streets of Montreal. Others say that occasional freezing of the overhead wires caused problems. But the main reason behind the tramway closure was the politicians’ dislike of 'ugly' overhead wires. There is an alternative. This is a 750 v dc-powered, standard-gauge rubber-tyred metro, resembling the rubber-tyred metro lines in Paris. Montreal has a network of four metro lines, all inaugurated in the late 1960s. The metro lines follow the rectangular street pattern. Line number 3 is not used; it had been allotted to the commuter line to Deux-Montagnes (which runs through a tunnel linking it with the Central Station). But the Deux-Montagnes line was never upgraded to metro standard.   http://lrta.info/articles/art0107.html            Hope it's of interest:                         Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Thanks Les. It would be fantastic to see streetcars return to Montreal. Three Canadian cities had PCC streetcars. Toronto had the largest collection of PCC streetcars, next was Vancouver and bringing up the rear was us in Montreal with only 17 PCC streetcars-Walter

No Bill (biking) You are not mistaken,..........I saw program a little while back ,talking about how Calgary is really turning into quite an efficient 'green' city,.inspite of it's being the HQ for the Oil Industry in Alberta Canada: It was quite an interesting program,..... ( I'll try to fin some site ,with clips from the show if possible) but Here's an article to start you off,.if you like: Wind-Generated Electricity to Power Calgary's C-Train By Ron Collins
Calgary Transit
Calgary, AL C-Train light rail customers in Calgary will being "Riding the Wind!" in September, when Calgary Transit becomes the first public transit system in North America to power its light rail transit system with wind-generated electricity. This program, being developed in partnership with Vision Quest Windelectric and Enmax, will provide 100 percent pollution-free operation on the system. Under the new, innovative program, Vision Quest has installed 12 additional turbines at its wind farm in southern Alberta and is selling wind-generated power to Enmax, Calgary Transit's supplier of electricity. The entire 100 car C-Train fleet will be driven by wind power, resulting in no pollutants being released into the environment. The elimination of emissions from the C-Train system is expected to contribute significantly to the city of Calgary's goal to reduce its corporate carbon dioxide emissions. "We are a leader in this area, and proud of the fact that our customers can ride the C-Train knowing we have taken this significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of urban transportation," said Calgary Transit General Manager John Hubbell. In May, Calgary Transit's "Ride the Wind" project received a Federation of Canadian Municipalities CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Award for leadership in renewable energy. The use of wind-generated electricity to power the C-Train system will avoid the annual generation of 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide that would have been produced by the burning of coal or natural gas for the generation of electricity for the system. This is equivalent to eliminating 7.5 million vehicle trips in Calgary annually. Levels of other pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide, will also be reduced. The program also is expected to provide greater budget stability for Calgary Transit by establishing a 10-year price structure for C-Train traction power. This structure will significantly reduce uncertainty that has resulted from the recent volatility in the Power Power Pool price of electricity. Operational costs of using wind-powered generation may increase at a nominal premium of one-half of 1 percent per passenger. However, when compared to the environmental benefits, Calgary Transit believes this is a small price to pay. Travel via C-Train provides an environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles, with a three-car C-Train carrying the passenger equivalent of 545 private vehicles   .............................Oddly enough Bill,.this article is on a site called  /American Public Transportation/          http://www.apta.com/services/intnatl/intfocus/windelec.cfm

Another site 'Ride the Wind' The C-Train
The C-train is Calgary's light rail transit system. Every day, thousands of commuters hop on board to go to school, to work, shopping, and more. The C-Train runs on electricity, which is carried above the tracks by overhead wires. Powerful electric motors propel the C-train down polished steel tracks, giving the train a quiet, smooth ride. Electric motors are far more efficient than automotive engines, and produce no harmful exhaust emissions. The Calgary light rail transit system is powered by electricity. Source: City of Calgary By giving commuters a fast, reliable transportation alternative, the C-Train helps to solve traffic problems. Each day, riders board the C-Train 189,000 times. If each commuter had traveled alone in his or her car instead of on the C-Train, the daily mileage would have amounted to 1.2 million kilometres. These car commuters would have used 107,000 litres of fuel, and produced some 270,000 kg of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants. The C-train is not only a convenient form of alternative transportation, it is an environmentally friendly one too! http://www.re-energy.ca/ridethewind/backgrounder.shtml   This site has a lot of interesting information (matter of opinion I guess),...but Have a look around it....................                 .with any luck .there may be some relief from dependency on FossilFuels.........(but I doubt the oil company's will allow that to happen without a fight)...............................hang on to any oil stocks, for a little while yet...................hahahahahaha

Additionnal infos on Light Rail Transit in Calgary ... powered by wind-generated electricity . Ride The Wind Commencing 2001 September 1, Calgary Transit entered into a partnership with ENMAX and Vision Quest Windelectric Inc. to develop a program (Ride the Wind) that uses wind-generated electricity to power the CTrains. There are 12 windmills located in Southern Alberta that generate the wind-power. The equivalent amount of power used by the CTrain is sent to the main power grid. The windmills generate this power. Although the CTrain itself does not produce CO2 emissions, the supply of electricity used for CTrain traction power used to originate from coal or natural gas powered facilities that do produce greenhouse gases. Using wind-generated power currently reduces CO2 emissions by 26,000 tonnes annually. As the CTrain lines are extended, the savings in emissions will also increase. It is expected that the "Ride the Wind" program will increase power costs by less than one-half of one cent per passenger. Awards: Since the implementation of the Ride the Wind! initiative in the latter part of 2001, Calgary Transit has been the proud winner of two prestigious awards. In 2001 Calgary Transit won a Federation of Canadian Municipalities CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Award for its leadership in renewable energy. Most recently, Calgary Transit was the recipient of a 2001 Pollution Prevention Award in the innovations category. The award is presented by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. The CTrain is now 100 per cent emissions free. It is the first public Light Rail Transit system in North America to power its train fleet with wind-generated electricity More at: http://www.calgarytransit.com/environment/ride_d_wind.html http://www.calgarytransit.com   JM

Montreal Tramways Company No. 2052, built by Wason in 1927, originally was owned by the Springfield Street Railway, and was one of 39 cars sold to Montreal after motorization of the last two remaining lines in the Western Massachusetts city in 1940. Upon arrival in Montreal the Springfield cars were rebuilt extensively at the Tramways' Youville Shops to conform to fleet standards. The work included converting the cars to single end operation and lengthening what were now the front platforms. In 1952, No. 2052 became one of a number which were reconverted for double end service, with its other platform lengthened at that time.   http://www.trolleymuseum.org/collection/international/2052.html

Loved these sites. Many thanks. Remember Provincial Transport. What a great bus line there were. Also enjoyed streetcar # 2052. I loved those Springfield streetcars. Remember that they had those nice leather seats, not the wicker seats like the other Montreal streetcars had. Someone should tell the people at Seashore Trolley Museum that the Ontario streetcar should be # 5, not # 60. I went to The Seashore Trolley Museum back in 1963. It was fantastic. I understand it's a lot bigger now with three miles of running track. When I was there the ride was about a mile or so but still a lot of fun-Walter

Sandy better hurry because I can't hold my breath much longer. Just taking the regular Amtrak Train from Montreal to New York and back will give you all the great views of Lake Champlain, Lake George, The Adirondacks and The Hudson River. I'm not sure of the fare now but back in 1998 it was $80 round trip. How about those Senators tonight? What a game. Plus one of the bumper shots going in to the commercial showed the Buffalo light rail trolley going along Main Street in Buffalo. Remember when NHL teams rode the trains. I remember a time when it hit the news that Bobby Hull and The Chicago Black Hawks had a bit too much beer and caused a big commotion on the Boston to Montreal train. The Black Hawks apologized to the passengers and paid some damage to the CPR for whatever happened on that overnight Boston to Montreal ride-Walter

Fresco   &    JMH  ,...............looks like were trying to revive a trolley idea of travel.....the western community's here are starting a 'rubber wheeled' type bunch of trolley cars,..........maybe it's the start of something more to your likeing,..tracks etc etc.............  Seems like a neat idea,..........what do think Fresco ,JMH.....are these guys on the 'right track' here's the story from this mornings Times-Communist Langford's trolley starts this weekend Bill Cleverley, Times ColonistPublished: Tuesday, July 03, 2007 Langford will time the launch of its new municipal trolley service with the Langford Fun Festival this weekend. The new rubber-wheeled trolley will be featured in the parade Saturday and then begin service Sunday for a four-month trial, Mayor Stew Young said. The idea is to run the shuttle on a figure-eight-type loop between neighbourhoods like Bear Mountain and the big-box store areas, Goldstream Avenue village and the Eagle Ridge Arena, Young said. Some of the 21 distinctive trolley bus stops are already installed for what will be a one-hour loop hitting all the Langford hotspots. "It will be on the busiest roads," Young said. "We've run the bus on it already. We've timed it all and we've tried to hit all the major areas where the transportation corridors are and where the major shopping and attractions are. So we've run it by the main nucleus of our town core." The trolley will begin its route at the Eagle Ridge Arena; loop around the Westshore Town Centre; head down Goldstream Avenue to Veterans Memorial Parkway; head up and loop around Millstream Village; continue up to Western Speedway and the Bear Mountain Resort and then back. Langford initially will run the service with one trolley it has acquired from a Seattle company for $60,000 US. The cost has been underwritten by the local development community and the municipality hopes bus-side advertising and donations cover the operating expenses. "We'll run one to start and if it's successful, we'll add another four or five," Young said. "Were doing a four-month trial and then we're going to regroup and get it all figured out. After the trial, we're going to look at doing it at Christmas for a Christmas lights sort of thing and shopping areas ... or if it's successful we'll just run it year-round."                                                                   HF&RV

Hi Les,
They're on the right track but they should do like Dallas, Memphis and Tampa. Put down tracks and get the real trolleys. These three cities all bought new streetcars that are replica's of olden day trams. Service is very popular in all three cities. We have the tram bus in West Palm Beach. We were on it last week. It's nice but it's not a streetcar. It's a start though and I hope the Langford trolley does well-Fresco

edbro68 MSN said...

I wonder why they don't go to tram buses? There would be no need to lay tracks and still have the benefit of electricity without pollution. Also the bus can pull to the curb where the street car used to block traffic.      Ed

fresco750 MSN said...

Ed,
Streetcars on tracks are smoother to ride than busses. You can run them in tunnels like many cities do. In many cities they run the streetcars in pairs of four streetcars during the rush hour. It's like a small train. You could never do this with busses. Streetcars hold more people than busses and really move people out of downtown areas during the rush hour very quickly-Fresco

I thought I'd mention this book I came across today,(quite by accident),.but it may be of interest to some of our Boston Mass. fgans as well........   Here's the lowdown:  I came across a book called :\                              "Passing Trains".......by a fellow named Greg McDonnell, Passing Trains
Greg McDonnell
Boston Mills Press, January 1996 Passing Trains examines the changing face of Canadian railroading over the past 50 years. The work of North America's finest railroad photographers is featured in more than 200 colour photographs, as well as gallery-quality black-and-whites. Travel back in time and enjoy an intimate view of old-order railroading. Greg McDonnell describes the conditions and changing scenery of the people working on the trains.
..........but aside from his book ,I just now came across a treasure trove (whatever that means),......all about Canada's Trains if it's of interest to you ,.you just might find some different stuff..hope so: This site is referred to as "Canada by Rail" ...................hope you guys like it   http://www.canadabyrail.ca/intBooks.html                           "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"

I know there's a few of you out there with a background ,tied to the CPR ,.....and of course we also have Our resident experts on many of Canada's Mass Transit .........   Fresco  ,.JMH,.......etc etc        Here's part of an article in one of todays papers,...... The idea first surfaced in July, 1867, when Canada's Confederation brought four eastern provinces together to form a new country. As part of the deal, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were promised a railway to link them with the two Central Canadian provinces - Quebec and Ontario. It was the promise that a transcontinental railway would be built within 10 years, that brought British Columbia into Confederation four years later. On October 21, 1880 a group of Scottish Canadian businessmen finally formed a viable syndicate to build a transcontinental railway. The Canadian Pacific Railway Co. was created on February 16, 1881. The engineering feat was completed on Nov. 7, 1885 - six years ahead of schedule - when the last spike was driven at Craigellachie, B.C.. The Canadian Pacific railway grew into Canada's first conglomerate, to include hotels, real estate, shipping and oil and gas businesses. CP Rail built some of its own steam locomotives as early as 1883. It would later build its own rail passenger cars, making it second only on the continent to the Pullman Co. of Chicago.   .................Yes   the old Canadian Pacifi Railway,...may now be sold to Foreign interest........ ./........................   the whole story can be read at:                      http://money.canoe.ca/News/Sectors/Industrials/2007/07/18/4349982-cp.html

Les,
Thanks for this great site on St Lawrence Boulevard. I thank God that I was lucky enough to have taken the streetcar from Craig Terminal and rode over the entire route before busses replaced the trolley cars in 1952. I was only nine years old but still remember my ride. The same situation for St Denis Street also. Remember a while back there was a posting that Trevanian's best selling book of 1976 "The Main" was supposed to be re-released this summer with additional information on St Lawrence Boulevard. Border's Book Store told me that this is probably in Canada only. I tried The Chapters Canada Book Store web sit and there was nothing on the re-release of The Main by Trevanian. If anyone has information on this I would appreciate if they could post it. Many Thanks-Fresco

It was on this day in 1814 that a man named George Stephenson made the first successful demonstration of the steam locomotive, an invention that would fuel the Industrial Revolution and dramatically affect the settlement of North America.

Stephenson had never had any formal schooling, but he taught himself how steam engines worked by taking them apart when they broke down, and eventually he learned how to build them from scratch. He made his first successful demonstration of the new invention on this day in 1814. His engine pulled eight loaded wagons of 30 tons about four miles an hour up a hill.

By the 1830s, trains were already traveling 60 miles an hour. When the first transcontinental railway lines were completed in the 1870s, a cross-country journey that had taken several months suddenly took only seven days. The railroads shrank distances and increased the speed of life, while fueling America's economic expansion and industrialization.

I was a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan in the 70s and 80s. I went to see him perform in Honolulu back then. He seemed to enjoy four letter words while interacting with the audiences?
I have all his LP albums somewhere. I have listened to the 'Railroad Trilogy' many times, and of course he nailed it as he usually did with all his compositions. Great times. The railroad was as high tech as it could get in the early days of Canada, something on the order of space travel today I think.

Bill, I would personally recommend Lightfoot as Poet Laureate for Canada. Here's a poem by the former P.L. George Bowering. He has written 60 books of poems and I can't understand any of them.                    Ed Whatever you do, do not
slam the year open with a bang,
waken the child
sleeping under that tree
into terror, that tree
dying in our back yard,
birds lining up to mourn. You

wanted a cheer for new
lang syne? Have you looked at the under
cutting of the North Shore mountains,
have you heard four wheel drives
passing your sweet coup챕
on the rain slick of Burrard?

Let that babe sleep, let
chainsaw rest in watershed,
tell politico it's all right to be short,
tell him forget auld acquaintance,
have a look at this
sleeper 'neath our tree,
wake this sweet bairn if need be
with a cup of kindness, two handles,
show this dear drowsy head
the home made paper you're holding-
it's the deed, hand it to that kid,
say keep this here, don't
let them take it anywhere, south or up the tower.

That's right, compaì±°ero, and say, that wee critter
looks powerful like you, you
must be proud, lucky dad.

As an earthquake rocks a corpse
in its coffin in the clay

so are you rocked in your desire,
so do you meet a living January,
so does Nature, call her that again,
depend on your doting, how we have
reversed our lot, oh Death
we address not, but list with new ear
to the Spirit herself utter her fear
of us.

Look, we've wakened the child, how
can we teach her be not us,
how give her power and sweetness,
and tell her what acquaintance should
be forgot?

Spread a rictus along your jaw,
dad, help raise a whoop and pretend
this will one day all be hers,
poor orphan, whose face even now
is shaded by that dead branch.

Seems they did resurrect some usage out of some old CPR right of ways,..........Sounds like a neat escape,.for a quick trip: Bike Trails Along Railroads

Throughout the United States and Canada, there are numerous bicycle trails that either run alongside existing railroads or run on the abandoned right-of-way of a railroad.

In Qu챕bec, the longest one, the "P'tit Train du Nord" runs for 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Saint-J챕r척me to Mount-Laurier on an abandoned Canadian Pacific route.

South of Saint-J챕r척me, this route continues to Blainville alongside what will become a busy rail commuter line. Photo above shows its route past the new intermodal terminal at Saint-J챕r척me.

In Central New York State, a great trail runs on the former Troy & Schenectady branch of the New York Central Railroad.

Further downstate, abandoned portions of the New York Central's Putnam Division and Harlem Division are now bike trails.

Part of the Wallkill Valley branch of the West Shore is a bike trail.

Cape Cod has a scenic trail on what was once the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad.

Along Lake Ontario shore, a portion of the old Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad is a trail now.

This is only a small sample. There are LOTS MORE!                                      HF&RV

The only ride I was never on at Belmont Park was the boat ride that they had on The Back River. The boat ride was too expensive as I recall. I thought I was washed out calling the Back River the Ottawa River in message 130. Then I looked up "Riviere des Praires" on Wikipedia. It says that Riviere des Praires (River of Meadows) and sometimes called the "Back River" is a delta channel of the Ottawa River. So there. Where does that leave me? Its primary purpose is to describe the principles behind railway signalling in Great Britain, but some coverage of signalling around the world will also be found. The emphasis is on the older, mechanical signalling - that worked by mechanical levers and with semaphore signals. More detailed information on modern and foreign signalling will often be found elsewhere on the web. This web site has developed from a desire to record in an orderly and easily understood manner the quantities of information that I have learnt during the last forty years - much of which has only been stored in my head! Dianne, Belmont Park was the best. Crystal Beach Amusement Park on Lake Erie in Ontario seemed like a fun place. I went there once before it closed and and a great time. It is the only time in my life that I had fresh water clams. They were right out of Lake Erie. I've been to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky Ohio which is great. I loved Hershey Park. For whatever reason I liked Disneyland in California better than Disney World in Florida. The CNE in Toronto was good. I always wanted to go to the Bob Lo Island Amusement Park that was on an island between Detroit and Windsor Ontario but never got there. If you entered from Canada you had to return on the boat to Canada & likewise from the US you returned on the boat to the US. Bob Lo closed in 1990. All in all, Belmont Park is still my favorite. The people in Le Cartierville Condos will definately see ghosts. Montreal should have made a park where Belmont Park once stood. -Walter

Or, that the first radio station in the world was Westinghouse KDKA in Pittsburgh; that the first practical induction motor, the first contract to harness the enormous water power of Niagara Falls and the first power station turbine generator were all credited to Westinghouse; and, that Westinghouse led the world in using atomic power to propel ships in the Navy. Remember Westinghouse appliances? Sewing machines, washers, dryers, the first "turnover" toaster, irons, grills, percolators, am-fm radios and record players. That's not all. Starting in 1871, George Westinghouse gave his employees a half day off on Saturday, the first step toward a five-day work week. In 1908, he began a pension fund for workers; in 1913, paid vacations were initiated. Finally, Westinghouse designed for personal use the first illuminated tennis court. To supply electricity to the 1500 light bulbs, he wired the first private alternating-current power plant. ...figured out how to harness the power from Niagara Falls by using turbines,...................this was a real thinking character,.....                     October 6th ,1846            ..........Happy Birthday ,George I'm,sure there's Millions of washing machines & dryers & stoves & various appliances,.whirling away at this minute in tribute to your Birthday........hahahahaha               Smart Guy for sure,........

Hi Les,
Very interesting posting on George Westinghouse. One of the few things I remember from school was how hard it was to stop trains before George Westinghouse's air brake. Brakemen had to manually put the breaks on a lot of the coaches as the train slowed down. Jean-Marie will know everything about George Westinghouse. Jean-Marie will most likely know which railroad had Westinghouse air brakes first.

I loved listening to Westinghouse Radio Stations in Montreal at night back in the fifties. On most nights you could hear four Westinghouse Stations. KDKA Pittsburgh, KYW Philadelphia, WBZ Boston and WOWO Fort Wayne, Indiana. These four radio stations were top 40 stations at the time. Great music-Fresco

The historic site, created in 1693, is to undergo renovations starting next year that will be part of a $6.7 million re-do of the area's streets and sidewalks that should be completed by 2010, Stephanie Jecrois, a spokesperson for the city's Design Montreal bureau, said. Hailing from Berlin and Buenos Aires - as well as Montreal - the three teams of eight designers and architects met Saturday at the site to discuss Place d'Armes' historical significance and the city's objectives in refurbishing
it. They have until Thursday night to propose ideas, which the city will incorporate into its own project for the site. "One idea would be to remove the steps and the elevated plaza added in the 1960s," architect Denis Lemieux, who works for Design Montreal, explained. The square used to be a transit hub for 26 tramway lines. It is still a major destination point for tourists, he said. To accommodate the masses who flock there, the city might reopen subterrenean public toilets under the square, he said. They were condemned in the 1970s. The statue in Place d'Armes commemorates Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve's defense of the young French settlement against the Iroquois, against whom de Maisonneuve's allies, the Hurons, were fighting to regain land the Iroquois had conquered. The public is invited to Place d'Armes Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and next Sunday, Oct. 28, at the same time for guided tours (in French only). There is also an exhibit on the square's history that will include sketches the designers make and add to the show this week.

You are correct. I know the subway talk went way back. My grandfather used to laugh about it but he lived to see the METRO being constructed but not opened. The Tramways wanted to run the streetcars in tunnels downtown but this proposal got killed by City Hall. The Tramways were going to pay for all the cost of the construction. Mayor Camillien Houde was a big streetcar supporter. Mayor Jean Drapeau was big on busses and of getting rid of the streetcars. Too bad, Montreal had such a great streetcar system. On the Bulls and Bears stock show this morning on the FOX News Channel they recommended buying stock in a company that builds light rail transit systems. With the high cost of fuel mass transit is coming back in a big way they said. Hope so. Thanks again-Fresco

Yes Maggie Prince George it is,.......& I'm sure someone (one of our members) did mention the accident of a tram running into the Restaurant,.( the lad: same incident you mentioned,.maybe it was you ,who brought that to out attention first,.However I think it was a few years ago....maybe not)     I also Remember having my first or one of my first 'formal' haircuts in a proper Barbers Chair with that board across the arm rest's to raise us little kids up.................Yikes.////but as I recall ( or think I recall) this wooden bench put across the chair was pretty cool (at a young age) to allow us to get the First Barbershop Haircut.........hahahahha  complete with Barbershop Candy stripe pole outside,........Remember, that on the siding beside the steps that lead up to that Barbershop, immediately beside the said Restaurant in Question.................. Also another right of passage was to finally be able to have the barber 'do away' with the elevating board,.and conduct a proper haircut on a man ,big enough to sit in the chair ,without that board...........hahahahahhaha  Then came the mid 60's and the long spell between haircuts......hahahahaha ........oh yea......maybe a bunch of the 70's too (like most of them).hahahahah                                                                           HF&RV

My dad used to talk about the tram going into Prince George. Don't recall the year but it seemed that Rielle and Wellington was the end of the line at the time  and the tram went off the track as it was circling around to go back up Wellington.   Ken M

Hello ! Old tramway of Montreal   Is there someone who remember this type of tramway in Montreal ? JM

fresco750 MSN said...

Les,
I remember three streetcar derailments that you have posted. The Lachine 91 coming off the tracks. There is a lot of snow and people standing around the streetcar. Another is of an old rush hour streetcar coming off the tracks as the streetcar was turning from Girouard to Monkland. You also posted a photo of another old rush hour streetcar coming off the tracks on a turn. This is the Prince George photo I'm thinking about-Fresco

Jean-Marie,
It looks to me like one of the double ended streetcars that was purchased second hand from Springfield, Massachusetts. This photo was probably taken on the Millen 24 Line-Fresco

jmhachey MSN said...

Hi Walter ! Yes a double-ended car. MTC bought 40 of those streetcars at $3,695. each (I don’t know if it was in CA$ or US$) More at: http://www.stm.info/info/infostm/2007/071116.pdf JM

fresco750 MSN said...

Jean-Marie,
I loved these Springfield Streetcars. If I saw one coming along Ste Catherine I would let the other streetcars pass and wait for the Springfield Streetcar. $3,695 is definitely a YIKES. What a great price. Wasn't there a couple of streetcars that looked like the Springfield Streetcars but were from Birmingham? The Tramways also went to Connecticut to buy streetcars but thought that the Connecticut Streetcars were in too poor a condition to purchase. My other favorite streetcar was the Cartierville type streetcar. Besides Cartierville these cars ran on the Notre Dame 25, St Henri 31 and the Ontario 5 lines-Walter

Hi Les ! Montreal should follow the example of a leader in the field of environment: BC (A $14 billion plan)   The Provincial Transit Plan Premier Gordon Campbell and Minister Kevin Falcon announced the Provincial Transit Plan in Vancouver on January 14, 2008—a new strategy to double transit ridership by increasing travel choice for people around the province, with new fleets, green technology, new rapid transit lines and new innovative services like RapidBus BC. The vision is to be a global leader in providing safe, comfortable, reliable services that will highlight green technologies and will reshape our communities by encouraging integration of work, home and recreational activities. As more and more British Columbians live and work near transit, urban form will shift, which will lead to lower energy use, increasing energy efficiency, and a lighter environmental footprint. The plan will reduce provincial transportation greenhouse gas emissions by 4.7 million tonnes cumulatively by 2020.[...] http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/Transit_Plan/index.html JM
