ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – As many as 100 sealing vessels remain stuck in pack ice off Newfoundland’s northeast coast and southern Labrador, amid concerns of shrinking food and fuel supplies.

Brian Penney, a superintendent with the coast guard in Newfoundland and Labrador, says crew have been evacuated from at least 10 vessels, with non-essential crew already back on land.

Local fishermen have said the pack ice, which is being pressed together by strong northeast winds, is the worst they’ve seen for two decades

....................this  must be a bit scary,.Having the pack ice close in around you,.

Apparently even the CoastGuard Ship is presently Stuck too :

aslo on the East coast in Daniels Harbour(is that right?) .......there having landslides,.and have lost a few homes already ( they were evacuated ,thankfully yesterday as a precaution).....today they've expanded the area to avoid,.as it now encompass's the highway in that spot,...........

Don't get me started Winston,......( hahahahahah ) I don't beleive a word of Global Warming,.......especially from a group of scientist weather 'experts' who can't tell me what this Weekends weather will be let alone the next century..........hahahahahah and I've mentioned before ( I think on this site) ,.that this whole country was under 'miles' of ice ,..our snowcaps were once under water,........So I suspect the Planet has 'warmed' .............................hahahahahaha   ........................................the sky is falling,.the sky is falling...........   besides we've been keeping weather records for about 140 years,.which on the big scale of things,......is rather minor in terms of knowing what 's going to happen,,,,,,,,,,,,, ...................................With any luck Winston the planet will warm quick enough for your property to become waterfront.............and you'll make a fortune:hahahah

Les:   I'm involved in marine insurance and am quite familiar with this scenario. I would expect that a lot of these vessels are uninsured. These operators are intentionally putting their vessels in harm's way by sailing into pack ice. I expect that the reward of a successful hunt is worth this risk - although not when people's lives are endangered. About fives years ago, I had a $12,000,000 fishing trawler go down in a flaming inferno - fortunately all lives were saved. It took about four days before it finally sank. I must say that every time I saw it on the news, I cringed. I lost my job about three months later - some employers have no sense of humour. I did manage to get re-employed elsewhere, although I no longer underwrite fishing vessels of any kind.   Gord Gibbons Brampton, Ontario

hi GordEric.///////that is interesting to hear,..because most Commercial Fishboats here on the leftcoast,....are generally not insured for anything other than the 'load',.unless it's a corporate owned boat, like Jimmy pattison,.or a few others that can afford the premioums,.....because as you know ,.it can be costly,......and your right the 'catch' (at least it used to be) very lucrative,..... Sounds like you have an interesting career,..and I bet you've seen a lot of strange stuff,......Here most pleasure boats, either don't or cannot get insurance,....(too expensive)  and I've seen some 'dandy' moves pulled out there, where I no longer wonder why some of them cannot get insurance........hahahahahah What now happens if they lose a large part of their sealing fleet,......are they just out a fishboat??
