Al Gore is trying to do something good for the whole planet. For our children's children. OUR GRANDCHILDREN. It is typical of those who do not want to see the truth to attack the man in every way possible. Whatever his house does or doesn't do makes his message no less urgent. The validity of this publication has been challenged by the Tennessee Valley Electrical Authority, who supply his eletricity. This is typical Bush propaganda. Why help them?           Ed

Ed. What does Bush have to do with The Tenessee Valley Electrical authority? Get your head out of your ass!!!!!!

Try reading my post properly before you attack me Winston. In no way did I connect Bush with the TVA. My head is right where it belongs with my eyes open. If yoiu prefer to support Bush and the naysayers that's your prerogative and I respect it but I care about my granschildren.                    Ed An obscure conservative group in Tennessee claims to be offering up the utility bills on Al Gore’s 10,000-square-foot Nashville mansion (wow!) as evidence that the former vice president doesn’t put his money where his mouth is on conservation. The group cited some damning kilowatt-consumption figures — 221,000 for the Gores in 2006, compared with the American average of 10,656, for instance — which, it said, were obtained from the Nashville Electric Service. It put the Gores’ average monthly electric bill at $1,359. Of course, those figures immediately rocketed through cyberspace. From Britain’s Guardian newspaper this morning: The Associated Press, however, apparently asked a spokeswoman from the Nashville utility company, Laurie Parker, if the policy group had actually obtained the information from them, and she said the utility never got a request from the policy center and that no information was ever turned over to them. Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider said: “Sometimes when people don’t like the message, in this case that global warming is real, it’s convenient to attack the messenger.” Kreider said Gore purchases enough energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane gas to balance 100 percent of his electricity use. Gore, who owns homes in Carthage, Tenn., and in the Washington area, has said he leads a “carbon-neutral lifestyle.” To balance out other carbon emissions, the Gores invest money in projects to reduce energy consumption, Kreider said.

Al Gore is a spoiled rich kid who has four houses, flys all over the place in private jets and owns a huge chunk of Occidental Petroleum stock. Gore does not care about us or our grandchildren.

I don't know when you elected yourself the Sherrif of this site Winnie.
I stand by the statement I made that this typical of George Bush. Freedon of speech allows that. I have as much right to make such a statement as people do to post crap that is not true about Al Gore. I made a simple statement, you made it a war. Why? Ed

Easy boys!

Is 'Green Power' the carbon credit Core talks about? Must be huh. Seems like he did some hasty lifestyle adjustments at the very last moment. Consevative republican Sean Hannity busted a number of politicians on this issue of do as I say not as I do, including big mouth Arianna Huffington.

"We went into this just asking the question, 'Is the leader of the environmental movement basically living up to his word?' Given that he's a Tennessean, I thought it's a question we should ask."

What they found is someone whose home uses as much power in a month as an average family would use in a year, he said.

I think what the Carbon Credit program means is, a manufacturer can purchase in dollars, carbon credits for any excess amount of pollution their particular factory will emit over and above a government set limit. This money will go towards programs which help the environment such as planting trees etc. If for example a company is allowed by the US government to emit 100,000 cubic meters of CO3 per year and emits 120,000 then they have to buy 20,000 credits. That money goes to saving the enviroment. If a factory only emits 80,000 they can sell 20,000 credits. Here is where it becomes nebulous: Does the tax payer cough up the initial cash, and then once there is enough credit in play it becomes self sustaining, or will the intial carbon credit fines support Al Gores idea.

I am a tad confused. Sounds okay at first reading, but is this another huge tax payer sponsored bureaucracy in the making? I hope not b/c sooner or later something should be done to ease our consumption of fossil fuel. I've travelled some of the world in my career, and pollution from autos is terrible in 3rd world nations. No restrictions at all. Leaded fuel used. No emission checks, and certainly no catalitic converter on cars, buses and trucks. I remember San Jose, Costa Rica or Manila, Philippines for instance at 'rush hour' -- impossible to breathe. The air is literally black with smoke. Per capita the US is the largest polluter, but at least there are restrictions. I'd like to see more electric cars on the road plus windpower, solar, geothermal generation. Lots of exciting possibilities.
Politicians are a tricky lot no doubt. Remember the contract for America? Al Gore maybe sincere but I'm etittled to my doubts. I'm looking for another Irish Catholic president. Just a thought.

The whole story Bill is, Do we support Al Gore or not. Do we want a world for our grandchildren to live in. He is trying to lead us the right direction. But the naysayers led by Bush and Cheney because they are in the oil industry don't want him to succeed. So they attack him. his house, anything that works to defray from the point he is making. It's the 'Fastboats veterans all over again' So whose side are we on? Bush or our grandchildren? Ed

Good Morning Gentlemen,   I come to this website to remember Verdun, read the stories and hear the veterans recall the memories of Verdun and the people.   I see no reason whatsover why such statements have to be made by what by all intent are mature adults. Certainly, disagree and voice your opinion, but to start telling people their head is up their butt, they are full of BS  and the booze does the talking is counterproductive, immature and ill spirited.   If I wanted to hear this "dialogue" I would tune into Jerry Springer.   Play nice.   Keith Harrison

Kieth. I agree with you. But we have been thru this before. Politics has no place on this site. This site is about Verdun, and the memories we have to share. Also trying to find people we have lost contact with. Not long ago on this site, there was a big discussion about the negativness that politics can cause. But out of the blue, for no reason, someone starts making statements about how wonderful some ex politician is,  and then making caustic statements about another politician. But it gets tiring when people try to use this site for something other than what it is meant to be. Do I resent the making of a positive statement about some politician. No. What I do resent, is making negative remarks, stating their opinioon as fact, and bringing their opinion about politics to this site.

Sometimes we fail to think before we act. But I will tell you, that the comments put on this site, by that person, just rubbed me the wrong way. Could I have put it another way, Yes. But I chose to not do that. I am not normally a confrontational person, but for some reason I got really upset about the comments made. Is it over? I would think so. But we will see...I could say more, but will stop here. Thanks

"Lay off the booze when you are trying to make a point of fact!!!!!"   This is a low blow and totally uncalled for. I think a statement like this admits defeat - you can no longer provide a valid arguement so you resort to this trash. Play fair or f*ck off!

Happy Easter Everyone! After reading the recent RANTS concerning Gore/Bush and the environment, I have to agree that this Site is not the place for Political or Religious politics. I am withholding my opinions, as I think it would be better to EMail  RANTS to each other directly until either the matter is settled amicably or discontinued. Nasty comments are out of place too!  A few years back I caused quite a stir concerning the Iraq War, but made several NEW friends by continuing the RANTS directly and off the site. Let's keep the site as a VERDUN CONNECTION! Victah

Let me get this straight....if someone makes a statement that we don't agree with, we should ignore it and not comment on it?...Now I am not talking about nasty comments here, but if someone posts a message like Ed Brown did and we have an opposing view and can post a reply without getting personal, why can't we do that? If people post their opinions on politics, world events what ever...if we have another opinion and don't say anything that tells people that we all are in agreement with the posters comments when in fact we do not agree and should be able to say so. But I do agree we have to learn to not take everything so personally and to heart .....   Ed..I am not saying that I don't agree with you...I have no thoughts on that topic one way or another...I am just speaking in general terms, here.  It could be on any topic ...   Once again a person's right to free speech is under attack.   Dianne

edbro68 MSN said...

There should be no reason why a person can't make a statement even about politics without some one starting a war. Many people say things that I disagree with vehemently but as an adult I realize their right and I ignore it. If the site is meant only for Hellos and smutty sexual inuendos I'm not interested.
I've tried very hard to find things of interest to keep the site going and connected to Verdun but since my presence bothers you Winnie, it's all yours.
Goodbye. Ed

happydi2 MSN said...

Ed...don't do that....come on now....we all get hot under the collar from time to time.....and most people do agree with you when it comes to free speech. Bye the way...you made a few sexual smutty inuendos yourself and I thought they were a riot....   Dianne

It should be remembered that Al Gore is one of the owners of the Carbon Credit Program Company. I have never seen anything stating what the company does with the money collected from selling carbon credits. Al Gore said last Friday that Americans should be taxed on carbon emissions. This at a time when almost half of Americans can't afford to fill up their gas tank. They purchase $20 worth of gas and stop. Al Gore's father was known as a shady senator and the cartoon "Foghorn Claghorn" is based on his father. Al should be known as "Smoghorn Claghorn." I am concerned about Global Warming. My house is only 16 feet above sea level. As anyone who reads my postings knows I am a big mass transit fan and have used mass transit all my life. I am not s stooge for the oil companies. That said, it is my opinion that Al Gore is a fast buck artist who is still pissed off that he lost the 2,000 elections and now wants to punish us with a carbon tax. Gore definitely has plans to get his greedy hands on the carbon taxes raised. I want my environmental science done by respected scientists and not Al Gore the fast buck crooked shyster.

winnie3ave MSN said...

Ed. You are right. Someone should be allowed to make a statement without being persecuted for it. My only problem was you bringing up The Bush name, because some conservative group said something about polution, global warming, carbon released into the air, or whatever, when Bush had nothing to do with it. I will admit, I did get carried away. I normally don't go off the deep end like that, but will admit that I did. But for you to leave Verdun Connections because of that does not do anything to make either one of us feel good. Some people on here called me on it, and they have every right to, and should have. I find no fault in that at all. My reaction was not a win/lose proposition, but just a overreaction on my part. If you do not stay on here, those that are left on here will be the loser because of you not being here. Now to put it into plain english. Am I an
asshole? Yes at times I can be...but I am still trying not to be, most of the time. Ed you say you have had discussion off of VC, and have made some new friends. Can you at least give me that benefit of a chance. Again, I apologize for hurting your feelings, and admit, that once again, I need to think more, and say less.

Hello everyone,   As someone who enjoys a healthy debate because it can generate much knowledge and new information on a controversial or little known topic, I no longer waste my time and post anything on VC that requires intellectual, thought-provoking comments because someone will inevitably attack me personally out of frustration because they cannot change my mind.   I don't want to waste my time being on the defensive all the time, while I respect their views.  I am an adult after all!  But when they continue to throw daggers at me because I disagree, I do bleed, and eventually I will snap and start throwing daggers back because I figure that may be the only behaviour they recognize.  So I give them a taste of their own medicine, but that too can backfire because they don't see themselves.   So I have to be the bigger person and walk away.  This is me whether at home, work, with strangers, or with the guy on the street who may have a mental disorder and wants to argue.   People's opinions are based on their experiences, their environment, their lifestyles,  their education, their personalities, and whether they are having a good day or not, so don't take things personally, let it be.   Yes, it is true that those 3 subjects are hot topics because people have strong opinions on politics, money and religion.  But I try to remember Bertrand Russell's quote:  "Be isolated, be ignored, be attacked, be in doubt, be frightened....but do not be silenced."   Enjoy your freedom of expression but don't be mean.    Dolly

Once an important issue such as environmental concerns is politicized, both parties go on the offensive to an extent I lose faith in what their true motives are. All I was saying is politicians stir up controvercy for their own selfish ends. Scientist are divided on global warming at this moment in time. That doesn't mean it is or is not occurring of course. Things can be done and should be done, to help our earth's environment. The streets of Verdun used to be under water once a year until they dammed up the banks of the St. Laurence River which of course is the beautiful boardwalk of today. There are both liberal and conservative passionate thinkers on this site, so it would be nice if we appreciate this fact. For instance viciously attacking G.B. is a knive in the belly for some here. It becomes personal. Ease up good buddies and Happy Easter.

Winnie,   I admire you for knowing yourself and being smart enough to admit your error.  It takes a big person to apologize and recognize an emotional outburst.  We are all human and I commend you for your honesty.  There should be more like you.     And Ed, if you firmly believe in something, don't let anyone ever get in your way or make you feel your opinion doesn't count.  I love your intelligent slant on the world and information that you share with us on this site.  VC would be the poorer without you!  Now I have to go and see about a turkey!  :-)   Dolly

In trying to put an ending to the mess that ensued in this thread let me say I do not see the Al Gore thing as being political. I say forget that he is Democrat or a politician, listen to what he is saying.
Here in Verdun the temperature is below zero and I am using full heat in the middle of April. The snow won't melt because it is frozen. We had more snow Easter morning. The ice caps are melting and oceans rising.
Can we deny that Katrina happened. The number of Quakes and sunamis has doubled in the last two decades.
We see these things happening and yet we occupy ourselves with questions about Al Gore's house. All that does is defer us from hearing the truth which perhaps is what we want. When someone says 'look out' it's sensible to at least take a look whether it might be a joke or not. Ed

Will it help if I tell you that I'm just about to go rake the front lawn!  The world has been changing and evolving since day 1.  I'm kinda glad the dinosaurs died out when they did, and the Grand Canyon is dry instead of filled with an ocean full of water.    We all do our bit to be environmentally alert but in the scheme of things, there is a natural progression to the universe that was set in motion a million years ago by the creation of man.    Shoot, I'm uttering an opinion and I vowed I wouldn't!  I take it back.  :-)   Dolly

biking2006 MSN said...

Ed maybe it would sensible to quote the evironmental scientists and not the agenda driven politicians. Global warming is a political football on both sides ot the aisle unfortunately. Maybe I should form my opinion on scientific literature and not from untrustworthy second hand sources. I met Al Gore by chance in Waikiki many years ago (1970). He scolded me for not being in Vietnam with the rest of the young men, when I had just gotten back from the war zone (US Merchant Marine).
