Summer Vacation in Verdun

We're half way thru March and I'm sure some people are talking about summer vacation. Are any planning to vacation or just visit Verdun? If you tell us your plans I will compile a list and post it once a week of who's coming when. People can then make arrangements to meet or some May use it for planning when to come. If several coming want to get together I will coordinate a meeting place for you. Think about it. When I discussed this with Maggie she approved.  We are not necessarily talking about a reunion all though it could work out that way.  Ed

edbro and other's out there.

I still have the computer as you can see. I am in
the stages of planning my summer . A trip back home is one of them for sure. I
just don't know when yet. I don't have a car , however I am hoping to have a
border in my home who is a trucker he telles me he often goes to Montreal on
runs and that I can jump in any time he heads that way.

North Bay is about a 6 to 7 hr drive away. I dont'
know if anyone of you live in my part of the world but I would love to get
together with some of you even if it is in Ontario.

I'm still trying to catch my breath from my partner
leaving it is hard to carry on while he still  has all his stuff here and
no place to move into yet.  My life feels a little surreal at
times.

So a get away would be just what I need. I'll
keep  looking on this site to see what is happening and try and arrange to
go to Montreal when there is a get together I would look forward to this in a
big way.  Thanks to all for your support and encouragement
!!!

Levisjean, If history is of interest to you, I invite you to visit the Maison Saint Dizier this summer. Our society SHGV is a strong promoter of this old house wich dates back to 1710 and is the oldest house in Verdun. Denis Harton, the president of our society and the historian Denis Gravel will be there to describe the history of this old  house. I will give more information later. While in Verdun, why not visit the library at the corner of Bannantyne and Brown as well as our own library in the basement. Guy (Roxboro)

Guy5479    I do remember the Maison
Saint Dizier , but wasn't it a legion at one time. It would be great fun to vist
it and get thwe history on it .
Thank you & Keep me
posted

Levisjeans, As I recently posted, yes the legion was there at one time as well as a dance hall and city of Verdun warehouse amongst other uses. It  is amazing that it is still standing considering its many uses, locality and neglect, but that is now in the past as many organisms are now protecting it including our society, the SHGV.  Guy

Gut at the risk of being rude what does SHGV stand
for?

back then in verdun the boardwalk was a second
home for alot of little verduners, and the elder
verduners.
beautiful walk along the boardwalk, cool off
at the redtop, pull your little red wagon
with your sweet heart sitting in the wagon.
others drove there bikes with wagons tied on the back
fender, with minnow bucket, fishing rods, lunch
bottle of kik, going down those steep wooden stairs
and walking along the river bank, looking at the bullrushes, hearing and seeing the birds
bullfrogs, minnows, turtles, tons of wild life
along the river bank for several miles.
then one day they came and started spraying
this white stuff, just killing everything, i remember that
well.
then the dump trucks came and started dumping
the fill from the metro, destroying inch by inch everyday
it hurt a lot of us little kids back then, even the police
drove by and yelled at us to get away from the vriver banks, today i now why because of that white
poision they sprayed on everything that kills.
if there was a green peace back then
this would not happen.

today when i walk along the boardwalk i just see
the remains that is left.
so sad, does anyone remember the boardwalk
was like in the 50's 60's,

Mman, I remember running along the boards that connected the wooden wharves. It was wonderful. The river is so far away now.     Ed

Metalman, Your memories of the boardwalk evokes my own recollection going back to the forties and early fifties. We also spent a lot of our time there. My parents would rent a boat at the Leblanc's on the weekends and we would spend the day on Nun's island. We also took walks on the old wooden structure from Galt to Lasalle and sometimes fish below the power house. Also, we would walk on Bannantyne from Galt to the Natatorium, swim all day and walk all the way back. I must have walked on all the streets of Verdun and seen all the nooks and crannies. Great memories. Guy (Roxboro)

Guy. It seems like we all walked "ALL" the streets of Verdun. Enjoying all that was going on. Looking in the windows. Just having a stroll around Verdun from one end to the other, up one street and down the other. What a life.

I just want to remind everyone to let us know when you are coming to Verdun. I will tabulate and post it so you will know who is coming at the same time in case you wish to meet up with them.                 Ed
