Our Pets

Here is a picure of my parotlettes.  Coco, (green is 7), Skippy is 2 & 1/2.  They are intelligent, adorable and they can also be little brats.  Anyone else have birds? I am a bird lover, I do like cats & dogs but I am allergic.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Les,   They love to groom each other, then end up getting carried away & go after each other's feet.  Your mom probably had budgies or love birds. Love birds look somewhat like parrotlets.  I have a few bird feeders outside. The Gold finches are beautiful, they turn brown in the winter. The chickadees are so cute too. It's hard keeping the squirrels off the feeders. They'll do anything to get at the seed. We have a ton snow here and I haven't seen any squirrels for a while until yesterday. She had the "shaven look", they pull their own fur out for their nests.   I'm suffering from a bad cold this weekend, who knows I may have to take a sick day tomorrow, (for a change). I used 2 last year, & lost the rest.   Have a good one,   Claroleca

Hi claroleca:   Your probably right about the budgies?? We get hummingbirds here & lots of them,.....and there is usually a pair of Eagles that make there way around here in the spring, (not every year byt fairly often,...) and of course all the other types ,.We feed them ,.but have to make sure the cat is not outside,..........she like the odd one for lunch ........   I can empathise with Your Cold thing,...We went out yesterday for Supper,..and as soon as I walked into the restaurant I mentioned I could feel some raspyness in my chest,....Voila today I have a sore throat,..and coughing.......Im not often hit with a cold,.but I suppose that's what this is?   That's why I'm just going to post some replies to questions that were directed to me,..and deal with this cold or whatever,.I don't feel much like sitting at the computer,.but thought I'd better check in................... ........................................................................................................Get Well

Hi Les,   Take care of that cold! It's been a doozy for me, but I'm getting better. I guess it's part of a sinus infection.  Oh well the woes of March.   I love humming birds too. They're beautiful. One time Doug & I were on the bridge/tunnel going over to Virgina and on top of a light pole, there was an eagle in it's nest. Never saw one so close. Just beautiful..  Love the birds!   Take care,   Claroleca

Hi Claroleca, I know this is an older thread, but I've been away for awhile and have some catching up to do. I am an animal lover as well. I lost my cat Woody a yr. ago in Feb. after loving him for 18 yrs.I now have 2 siameses mix litter mates that are about 1and1/2 yrs. They're a pleasure.I also have a 13yr.blind llaso apso who is a dear.About 2 yrs. ago I was at a garage sale and the lady was giving away her 8yr old parakeet, so naturally I took it. I have since bought 3 others and they are in a flight cage. One of them has been ackting weird lately.Always eating, sleeping and abit of an outcast. Sounds like my 14 yr.old son. But he is up and down with these symptoms.Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Your birds are gorgeous by the way. I'll tell you about the wild parrots here in south Fla. sometime.

Do you think that the bird is pregnant???

wendythepool MSN said...

Hi there, good question? Have no idea of the sex of the bird or how to tell. Let me know if you can. Thanks

Wendy, if you want to know if they are males or females check   just below their foreheads where the nose holes are. Blue for boys  and  tan for girls.    Usually immature parakeets are pale pink  changing after maturity.
Too bad you didn't know the  setting the 8 year old parakeet lived in - maybe not used to being around  so much company.  Perhaps it is missing  the previous  setting.     If you give this bird a spot of his own  and just see what happens. Apparently if they start picking out their own feathers  it means they are bored or lonely.   Laurie

Hi Wendy,  It sounds to me that the 8 yr old parakeet may not be feeling well.  Maybe gets some vitamins to put in the drinking water. My dad used to tell me about the wild birds he would see in Florida while out golfing, the green ones. He said they looked like my green parrotlet. I love cats as well but am allergic. I love dogs, but I'm not sure which ones I'd be ok with. Right now though I'd feel so bad leaving a dog at home while we're at work, we leave 7 am & get home around 6. It wouldn't be fair to a new young pup or a dog in new surroundings. One of these days though. My birds have their own cages. Parrotlets can be territorial and the younger one really bossed around the older one with biting and I think he didn't let him eat. Coco had to go the vets, thank goodness there is an exotic vet not too far away. They sure took care of him, but $$$. He's doing well now but has a lame foot.   Claroleca

Wendy,
Have you ever been to Butterfly World which is right by you at 3600 W. Sample Road (Tradewinds Park) in Coconut Creek, 954 977-4400. They have a really great collection of birds. Last year when we were there with our grandson a parrot took a liking to me and would not get off my shoulder. When the trainer removed the parrot he was so upset that he uh..wized on my shoulder. My grandson still laughs about this. "The parrot peed on grandpa's shoulder" he tells everyone. Regardless of this mishap I love going to Butterfly World. It is a really fantastic place to see. The admission price is $20 for adults and $15 for kids but there are a lot of coupons around which take a couple of bucks off the price. In addition to the birds, seeing all their butterflies is amazing also.

Since my ex and I are very attached to our dog a
handsome German Sheppard named "Dakota" He is very observent and knows some
thing is going on.
Because we both love him so much we are going to
try the shared custody arrangement.
I hope this works. I think I'll miss the dog more
than than man.

Having major trouble posting today.2nd message I am sending. My old bird is fine, it is one of the newer ones that is sick and according to Lauries theory it is a boy.Have 3boys and 1 girl. The parrots down here are called quakers and have grown in pop.tremendously. I found a downed nest once after a bad storm and was tempted to keep the 3 babies inside but decided against it and called wildlife offcials. I have'nt been to Butterfly World but my 2 sons have and enjoyed it. Been to Tradewinds park many times for pic nics though. Take care and hopefully this works.

Hi, yes I have a yellow canary, 3 yrs. old and sings beautifully endlessly...so I named him Caruso. I also have a dog, Jake, he is a Nova Scotia duck toller, aged 9 and a couple of aquariums...very disturbing news about the wet pet food recall, eh?

claroleca2 MSN said...

Wendy, maybe you can go to a pet shop and tell them about your bird's symptoms. They might be able to suggest something to help him. Quaker parrots are beautiful too.  They're like a bigger version of Coco.   Fresco, where is the Butterfly World? Would I ever love to go there, probably too far away from here though. I've been to an aviary in Niagara Falls, but at the time there wasn't too much to see.  I love butterflies too.  One day while I was sitting outside in the summer time,  I had the birds out (in their cages) and a butterfly kept coming back & forth and sitting on my foot. A couple of squirrels & chipmunks were coming by to get peanuts and of all things, a bumble bee landed on the arm of the chair & sat for a while.  I let it sniff a peanut. It didn't seem to mind.  Those are the kind of days that I just love!   Wendy, hope the bird is ok, what's his name?   Claroleca

Claroleca,
Butterfly World is in Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, Florida. I live in West Palm Beach, Florida and it is about a 40 mile drive for me. It is very close to Coral Springs, Florida where Wendy lives. Coral Springs to Coconut Creek is like the distance of Verdun to NDG. It is close to The Ft Lauderdale Airport and about 30 miles north of The Miami Airport. I would not make a special trip to Florida to see Butterfly World but if you are in South Florida it is definitely worth a visit. I have never seen so many butterflies in my life. All shapes, sizes and colors of butterflies. The bird collection is amazing also. You walk in to huge double door screen bird cages. You can feed the birds. The butterflies are inside huge screen cages also however wild butterflies seem attracted to Butterfly World and you see them as soon as you approach the place flying all over. Saying "Hi" to their cousins inside the cages I guess. The screen cages are huge with plants and trees inside. I'm certain these birds and butterflies don't feel trapped. You can stay in there as long as you like. It is a real fun place especially if you like animals and nature. Beautiful plants and palm trees are everywhere. They have a nice souvenir shop and an OK restaurant with burgers, dogs and stuff. I hope this info helps.

Hi there, where abouts in West Palm do you live? I've been to the Dryer Park Zoo up that way a few times.I believe it's had a name change along with some new exhibits. They've made some major improvements last time I was there about a yr. ago.Enjoy going there cause it's alot closer than Miami Metro Zoo but a lot smaller. Have you ever been to Parrot Jungle?I was there about 15 yrs. ago and was very impressed.Beautiful grounds.I know they've changed location since.

Hi Claroleca, my sick birds name is Shadow. I have a lime green one named Tweety, a white one named Snow and a blue one named Cloud. I'll take your advise and swing by a pet shop today and see if they know what's up.

Thanks for the info Fresco. Butterfly World would be my type of place to go. I'd love to see all the different butterflies and the birds! It would be a nice treat for sure, and Wendy mentioned Parrot World. I'd be in heaven if went to those places. Maybe some time we'll just happen to get down there....   Wendy, did you find out anything about your bird Shadow? I hope he's ok.  My birds are good. They seem to know just what you say to them, especially Coco. I'd hate to any of them sick.   Claroleca

Hi Wendy,
The zoo in West Palm Beach is great. We took our grandson there also. We live in Baywinds which is on Okeechobee Boulevard just east of Rt 441 (State Route 7). If you go north on 441, just keep going straight until you hit Okeechobee Boulevard and you can go no further. Turn right, go east and at the next light (Baywinds) you will see a waterfall on your left. That is Baywinds. They have started construction of Rt 441 past Okeechobee Boulevard heading north. At the present time you have to detour at Southern Boulevard. I was surprised to learn that Route 441 is 939 miles long. It runs from Lake City, Tennessee to Miami, Florida. I have not been to Parrot Jungle but definitely plan to go. Can you believe this. We are ten minutes from Lion Safari and we have not gone yet...and I ain't lion either-Walter

Hi there, Shawdow seems to be doing much better today.Went to the pet shop yesterday and they suggested vitamins like you did and it seems to have helped if they work that quickly, that's amazing. Thanks for your concern.

Hi Fresco, I used to ride around your neck of the woods a few yrs. ago when my husband started his own pool business, but we would go west on Ockeechobee.Haven't been down that way in a long time.I've been to Lion Country about 16 yrs. ago.Didn't see much though.I guess it was too hot and all the animals were way under the trees. If you ever watch Animal Cops Miami, sometimes you'll see Clintmore animal Hosp. in Boca where I got my old dog from.

Wendy,
I do watch Animal Cops Miami. I will keep an eye out for Clintmore hospital. We were at Boca Raton Community Hospital three times last week visiting a friend. Our home in Baywinds is just off Okeechobee 9 miles west of downtown West Palm Beach. I'll let you know when I see Clintmore Hospital. Thanks for the info-Walter
