Goodmorning Bill;.......  I would think you may be able to find a local shop that could scane it (even if by sections) and then reproduce it on a CDRom Also check with an actual map company.and ask their thoughts on it,               Good luck .///////   you also could scan it in the largest sections available to you on your scanner, then re-assemble them or just burn all the different sections to a CD.....                                                 HF&RV

Les, Message 239, Map of C척te St Paul, Montreal 1931: I am surprised to see that the Rivière St Pierre is still shown on the 1931 map as this river is apparently still there but now covered. I am doing research on the rivers and lakes that covered the island of Montreal from the beginning of the colony to today. Enclosed is a map covering period 1542 to 1642. I have access to several maps to help me in my research but all additional information is welcome. Guy

.....more stuff on Turcot, (may have been posted before,? ,but here it is) 2006 02 02 The Turcot Yards to the Turcot Interchange 2 A short history and the creation of a temple for the automobile

By Doug Scholes

The Turcot round house was in use until the mid 1960’s when the popularity of the automobile increased, which in turn caused the decline of goods transported by rail. As well, Montreal was preparing for the World Exposition in 1967 and was beginning to put into place the necessary infrastructures such as transportation and communication networks that would present the city as an urban model of the future. The Turcot round house was finally demolished in the early 1960’s to make way for the Turcot Interchange, part of the system of autoroutes that would allow automobile traffic to move freely and unimpeded through and around the city. The Turcot yards were in use until 2002 as a transfer yard, a place where containers are on- and off-loaded between road and rail transport vehicles. By 2003, the yard was stripped of all the tracks, and the administration and holding buildings were demolished, leaving the space empty - an erased record with very little evidence of its industrial and natural past.

The land now has a different use, at least part of it does. The larger section that stretches west of St-Henri has remained (as of Jan. 2006) a blank slate that awaits future development to give it identity, to give it a visual profile. At the east end (closest to St-Henri) stands the Stonehenge-like structure that ties together the concrete and asphalt arteries of autoroutes 20, Decarie, and 720. Technically known as the Turcot Interchange and dubbed the spaghetti junction, this mass of twisted roadways is the complicated solution to keep cars and trucks moving smoothly through the convergence of three major autoroutes. It was seen as a way of the future, and in particular, the means by which automobiles and communities could co-exist. Suspending a road on pillars was seen as a win-win situation: allowing traffic unimpeded movement through densely developed areas and allowing the community below the raised roadway to exist (with minimal changes) as it had previously done.   http://readingcities.com/index.php/montreal/comments/the_turcot_yards_to_the_turcot_interchange1/

That is one I will try and keep. This would be just west of Turcot more at Hickmore and Cote de Liesse near the T Can. or off the 20 in Lachine heading west. Its called Taschereau Yard. In the photo is the Diesel Shop bottom left..bottom right locos waiting to go out after being serviced..or just parked there. Called the hole at one time.Top of photo right shows the Hump Yard where freight trains would be assembled..by shunting down hill and sending them on their own. That is gone now and has been replaced by TurcoT Yards. Guessing top view of city is looking towards Ville St Laurent. as Hump was at that end of yard..North end if I got my directions right. Never was a boy scout....hahaha   Les great photos of roundhouse also heard there was one buried there after it went off the rails and sunk...   Thanks Lad

Les, Yes, I took a ride in this boat a few years ago. It is a must for those visiting Montreal and who know something about the Lachine Canal, as all Verdunites do. The following article appeared in our (SHGV) spring 2006 revue of the canal, the top photo is from 1942 and the bottom one is 2002 of the same Saint Gabriel Lock. You will see all the old factories , many of wich were transformed into condos. The tour starts at Atwater and goes to the Peel street basing wich is next to the Bonaventure Expressway and back. If my memory is correct, the price is in the $15.00 range. I may have some photos of the tour, I will check. Guy

If I remeber correctly, the place was closed.  I also went the previous year with relatives from California. I must say I was disapointed as I mentioned then, not at all like it was on Notre Dame Street and the spruce beer tasted like water. Barbara Strudensky did look sick, very skinny and with a cigarette in her mouth. I must try the one in the point and I will report back. Guy

As soon as we arrive in Montreal we head to Atwater Market and next stop Paul`s on Charlevoix for steamed hotdogs and french fries.  I have to say that they are better than Lafleur`s.  As a kid we used to walk over Mountain bridge to Notre Dame and get hotdogs but I could never handle the spruce beer just give us plain coke.  I have to admit that I have never hit Paul`s when he was there just some French speaking girls serving.

guy5479 MSN said...

Les, If you look at my picture of the Emile Bertrand restaurant you will notice that the date I took the photo was July 2nd 2006. The McLeans article on Barbara Strudensky says that her daughter Andrea visited her on July 2nd, the day before her death. That explains the reason why the restaurant was closed. In reply to Carole's comment about how Santa got in....   My brother and I were talking about this at Christmas.  We also had stovepipes in the kitchen - that stove was the only source of heat and cooking in our flat for many years.  How Mum made decent meals on a coal stove is beyond me.  Being curious children we wondered how Santa got in without burning up in the stove as he came down the stovepipes.  Now I can tell you.  Apparently, he "took a pill" that made him small and impervious to flames, then he jumped out into the kitchen, left our presents in the living room, then went back up the chimney.  Our parents told us this so it must be true, right?    The other thing about those stovepipes is that you could hear birds chirping at the top of the chimney.  If we kids weren't behaving in the weeks before Christmas our parents told us that the birds would hear us and report us to Santa who would mark it down on the naughty side of his book.  Boy, did we smarten up fast!   Have a great day everyone.   Pat Daly

Les, Those lanes were our playgrounds, much safer than playing on the roads. However, I was struck by a car when running out of my yard on Galt ave. but luckely only suffered minor bruises. Not so lucky was one of my friends who was struck by a car at the corner of Bannantyne and Church in the early 40s and ended up in the hospital but he survived. We Verdunites are sure made though. http://www.metrodemontreal.com/orange/berri/archmain.html   In my research for my novel I found this site.  The art work underground in the metro is outstanding.  There's another site showing all the stations and the artwork but I just can't find it now.    Here's an example and I remember when the station was built. I met Gaboriau at that time --- he was married to someone I knew during my theatre days in Montreal around the late sixties.  Interesting artist...  and interesting times.  Brought back memories.   Question:  Which station is your favourite and why?

This looks like it might be a neat thing to checkout next week in Montreal,....it will be an exhibition showing all the ( or some of the ) projects slated to change Montreal's Future Look.....

A MAJOR EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED:
THE 'MONTREAL OF THE FUTURE' EXHIBITION
2nd edition

Dates: March 25 to 31, 2008

Where:  The Grande Place in complexe Desjardins (located in downtown Montreal), in a neighbourhood that is home to several future urban development projects.

Description:  We are proud to present the 2nd official edition of a unique public event that highlights real estate development and infrastructure projects (commercial, residential, institutional and governmental) that will change the landscape of Montreal over the next quarter-century.  This special event will feature a record number of architectural models, designs and plans loaned by various promoters and organizations and presented at the Grande Place in complexe Desjardins.

The first edition in March 2006, presented at the CDP Capital Centre, was a huge success.  This time we are planning for an even greater number of exhibitors and participants, and will be adding two new important elements - major TRANSPORTATION infrastructures and ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS (sustainable development).

Members of the business community and government officials will be on hand for the official opening event at the exhibition site on March 25, 2008 hosted by honorary president Benoit Labonté, Mayor of the Borough of Ville Marie.  This event will be attended by over 500 guests, all of whom are involved in and concerned about the urban and economic development of Montreal.

The exhibition will be open to visitors free of charge.  Thousands of visitors are expected over the course of the event, given that the complexe Desjardins attracts traffic of some 36,000 people every day.

For more info on the exhibition:  Robert J. Vézina, organiser 514-875-1353 ext. 205
