Hi Phyllis,   That our beginnings were at Connaught School.....who'da thunk!  Your name is not familiar to me...but....age sometimes will do that.  The only "Day" that I recall was a fella by the name of Jerry Day, any relation?  Our family also attended St. Aidan's Anglican Church on Hamilton..any memories from there?   You may have noticed a member by the name of Maureen Hindle, she was also a Connaught graduate.  I personally didn't know her, but went to school with cousins of hers (Charles & Diana).   Indeed it truly is a small, small world.

geniegal9 MSN said...

Hi, Linda, Good memory!  Jerry would be my "kid" brother.  He is closer to your age.  Still living in la belle province, (Dorval),  a doting grandfather.  But aren't we all doting grandparents?  My oldest grandchild is 17 for goodness sake!! And perfect. Ah, St. Aidans.  Home of handsome Anthony Harwood-Jones and his dad who was priest there.  I went to girl Guides there although my family were members of St. Paul's United on Hadley.  My uncle was minister at St. Paul's. The Hindle name rings a bell.  So many names on this list are familiar but I just can't put faces to them.  Cheers -- Phyllis

Hey, Laurie, Thanks for the picture  and the website.  Russell sure is a pleasant looking fellow.  And I enjoyed looking at Errol's art.  Judging from his painting of Coltrane I gather he's a jazz fan?  Is Errol still living in Canada? I wish you had childhood photos of them too, say age 10 - 12 when I knew them.  My memory is so spotty! Are you a younger sister? I hope you don't get two answers from me to your post.  I responded earlier but nothing seems to have happened when I hit send.  Oh well. Cheers -- Phyllis

Hi Phyllis, At at last   MSN is working.  Couldn't get in all  morning. Errol  isn't in Canada any more.  He left   in the mid 70s if my memory serves me correctly. We attended St  Aidans  Church, as well.    My brothers were friends with the H.J. boys.    The family inherited their dog but promptly  returned it to them  when it was  repeatedly attacking my mothers legs.    Oh well, such is life. We lived at  6066 Jogues.    I "cut" out  some pics for you.  Errol, dark suit,   at about 13,  Russell   12  and Heather  9,   and me as a bambino. Do you have any of yourself.  I told Russell about  the conversation, and he couldn't quite place you  by name.  Happy Memories ! Laurie

Hi Ron,   Sometimes it's necessary to make the photos smaller in order to post them.  It doesn't say this, but reducing them often makes them 'postable'.   Love all this stuff and passing them on to Walter.   Thanks.

Hi Phyllis, Your name is very familiar and Barbara Southwick also rings a loud bell, although I can't picture either of you.  Patrick Harwood-Jones was in my class.  I believe he passed away at a young age.  I went to Brownies and Girl Guides at the Church of the Redeemer, but remember going to church parades at St. Aiden's. My brothers are Bob & Ken Hindle and cousins, as Linda mentioned, Charles and Diana Hindle. Maureen

Hi Linda, I couldn't remember the bird's name either but the dog's name was "Brindie", short for his/her brindle colouring. Maureen

geniegal9 MSN said...

That's right.  Brindie it was.  She talked so much about him that I really wanted to meet him.  I remember your name too, Maureen but can't put a face  to you.  I've been trying to upload a scan of a newspaper clipping for Laurie of  several grade 7 Connaught  "grads"from 1954 (including me) but have had no luck. It is a jpeg file.  Don't I just attach it to my reply?  Please help. Thanks! Phyllis

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Phyllis ~ in your reply box, across the top you will find a "postcard" box with mountains and the sun.  Click on it, then click on "my computer" and browse to where you have the picture you scanned stored, then click on the picture you want and press "open", then "Add Photos".  It should show up in the reply.  You can also attach a file ~ you can see this just under the subject line, with a little paperclip.  The directions are pretty much laid out.  The picture won't show up in your posting, but will be at the bottom of your post, and viewers will be able to click it to see the attachment.   Cheers.

Way to go Phyllis....yippee.   I notice that you are the only girl wearing gloves, is that right?  Funny, but I remember going to my first job interview after graduation from highschool, and having our teacher ~ Mr. D.G. Cumming ~ say that we should wear white gloves to the interview.  Who knows eh ~ but I got the job.   Barbara Young looks very familiar, and Elaine Jackson I think is the older sister of one of my playmates when I was young ~ Frances Jackson.   Kudos on posting.  Thanks.

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Hi Phyllis,   Found this picture from Connaught School, Grade 7, 1958, which was a year later than I graduated.  In the front row 5th from left is Frances Jackson.   Cheers.

laurie19540 MSN said...

Good picture Phyllis.   I emailed it to my brother. He was friends with the Harwood Jones boys.   Did you see the pictures I posted a few days ago of my two brothers ?  Took them off because they took up too much space.   I notice an Erika Feifer in that newspaper clipping. My sister used to be friends with a girl  Heiki Feifer.  Sisters ??? Laurie  Etienne

geniegal9 MSN said...

Hi, Laurie, Yes, I did.  It was definitely Errol who was in my class.  And I had a bit of a crush on him for a while.  Probably somewhere between Victor and John

geniegal9 MSN said...

Hi, Linda,  Joanie, Barb and Carolyn were also wearing gloves.  Look closely.  Joanie and Erika were two of my three best friends at Connaught.   I don't recognize the girl 5th from left but I wonder if the girl 5th from right isn't Frances.  Elaine also had an older sister named Norah I think.  I sure wish my memory weren't so spotty!   Cheers --Phyllis

geniegal9 MSN said...

Oops.  Erika had two brothers, Erwin (a lot older) and Reinhold/Ronny (younger) but I don't remember a sister.

geniegal9 MSN said...

Linda, is the boy second from right at the top Brian Hurst?

geniegal9 MSN said...

And the girl far left bottom, is that Bunny Pullen?

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Phyllis ~ you're right about the gloves.   In the pic I posted from what I remember of the girls in the front row:   From Left:  4th - Heather Etienne (This is Laurie's (another member) sister)                   5th - Carole Brouillette                   6th - Frances Jackson                   7th - Shirley Harbour                   8th - Lorraine LeFergy   My bad....Frances is 6th from left and 5th from right!  And Frances had an older sister Norah.  The other girls were playmates of mine.  But, I also knew quite a few of the fellas.  Often when I look at old pics I wonder what has become of these friends, and what paths they took in life.  And it's wonderful to connect and relive those moments.

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Phyllis ~ I don't think that girl is Dianne (Bunny) Pullen as she was a couple of years ahead of this crowd.   The boy, 2nd from right, top row is Wallace Walker.   Cheers.

geniegal9 MSN said...

Thanks, Linda, for confirming my memory of Frances.  Bunny Pullen is Bev Pullen's sister and  Diane Pullen's aunt.  It used to amuse me because Bunny is younger than Diane.  Bev & Bunny lived across the street from me on Springland.  Diane lived on Monk Blvd.  and was part of a group of us who walked home together from VHS.  Elaine Jackson was also part of that group and if I remember correctly, lived on Woodland. Cheers -- Phyllis

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Phyllis ~ yup the Jackson lived on Woodland, and my aunt (where I often stayed) lived on Hadley, right at Woodland.  The Jackson's house had yellow brick on the outside.  Spent quite a bit of time over there, as they also went to St. Aidan's.   Wow...did you remember Heather Gosham, who used to have a younger sister by the name of Cherry?  Or the Condy family?

geniegal9 MSN said...

Hi, Linda, Yeah, the Gosham name is familiar but not the Condy's.   Now does anyone remember getting their dad's axe  out at  this time of year to chop ice off the road so we could get skipping?  The surest sign of spring (besides the smell of dog poo in the air ) was the cloud of sand dust we raised with the ropes.  Yay spring!!!   Phyllis

It's funny you were talking about skipping I was
just thinking about that the other day walking on the street were there was no
snow. The whole feeling came back to me. The first dry spot on the sidewalk we'd
grab our skipping ropes and run for it/ I was also thinking of Easter I would
get new patten leather shoes. A Easter hat, and gloves. Wow the things you never
forget!

Well no skipping today in North Bay ONT. It has
been snowing all day here. What a mess, just when I could start to see the grass
showing in my back yard! Oh well I know it won't stay long, but then again you
never know what kinda weather we are going to get here. All I can say is
POO.

Now that's a familiar Montreal picture,.....everyone dressed up ,.the streets have been cleaned,.and the people from all over would be walkinmg to or form the Church,..........and that feeling of freedom (from the winter,.....and all the heavy clothes)..............Good old picture,....and we all probably have one similar to it,in our family albums.........probably one of the few times our parents could gather all the kids together in one spot ,while we were still clean..........hahahahahah

Linda - is the little midget Rick ? That is so cute ! Laurie

laurie19540 MSN said...

I liked your articles Phyllis and Linda about the smells , getting a new Easter outfit for church, including a hat. Oh those flaming hats.   What our mothers do to us !!!  Brings back memories.    You mentionned the Condy family. My brother used to hang around with Roy Condy - Errol  (the artist)  would teach him art work along with Harwood Jones boys,   Apparently Roy is today an artist.
Do you know anything of Jimmy Simpson ?

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Yup Laurie, that's Rick.  If you look at the hairline...that widow's peak....it's so easy to identify him in pictures.  Will ya look at those shorts.  Also, my mom always made him wear those silly elastic suspenders and he always resembled a little old man.  What a hoot.   Cheers.

geniegal9 MSN said...

Linda, what an adorable photo!  That was the easter I had what I thought was the spiffiest green suit with a box jacket and I was allowed to wear high heels for the first time.  As for patent leather Mary Janes, I just ached for them when I was younger.  Mom kept me in Oxfords forever.  Then I got my first penny loafers and then ... patent leather sling backs! Phyllis

geniegal9 MSN said...

Laurie, I just googled Roy Condy.  It seems he is a much published illustrator of childrens' books. Phyllis

mom1945-linda MSN said...

This picture is on Hadley, right at the top of Woodland.  On the right hand side of the picture where the brown bldg. is, there used to be a long side of the garage, which was a cement block structure, and this is where we used to play 'stand all'.  That was the corner of Springland and there was a depanneur that we called "Elsie & Paul's" and one of the teachers from Connaught (Miss Thompson) lived right around that corner on Springland.   The house that we're standing outside of was right at the top of Woodland, and you could look down Woodland and see right to the Woodland Bridge crossing the acqueduct.  When I was at VHS my aunt & my grandmother could look out the window which was a bonus at lunch hour, because they had my lunch ready and on the table when I arrived.  Not such a bonus when a "fella" walked you home after school or after a school dance ~ which I attended every Friday!!!!  I couldn't win, because if I walked home on Springland (the next street over) I got drilled on why I took that route home.  Guess parents were more observant and had a tighter rein on us in those days.

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Roy used to paint all the backdrops at our Church plays, concerts, etc.  He also did the artwork for the VHS annual one year.  Not a bad looker also, if I remember!

geniegal9 MSN said...

Linda, I've been racking my brain over Heather & Cherry Gosham.  Did they live on Briand across  from a small park that fronted on Monk Blvd.?  I know I know them but just can't place them. Phyllis

Mom   Your picture  Wooldand & Hadley,   The corner store on Springland  had been owned by an elderly lady  , Known as Polly, she sold same to Paul Emil Emond, who had been a milkman, and he claimed would only run store for a short while & retire, I went back several Years ago, he was still at it, and he regonized me,   This store was the local hang out for young people. During the 1930's next to the lane same side of street, lived an Italian family, they kept goats in the back shed. and once the snow went used to tie them up on all the vacant lots that existed then When they moved Jennie Cockoluch, moved in, Pictur taken  Hadley & Egan  1944. She must have been 12/13 years old then

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Hi Ron,   Yup, know Paul Emond's store very well....that's where my dad used to buy his beer.  Paul & Elsie's was just across the street from Paul Emond's, but they were a much smaller mom&pop shop.  Also Nurse DeWitt who lived down the street on Springland used to keep a goat in her front yard.  She was the nurse at Connaught School.   And I do remember the Cokalatchuk's....they were a real nice couple.   Cheers.

Cheers -- Phyllis

geniegal9 MSN said...

This one is for the more northerly of us Ville Emarders:  Laurie, living on Jogues you probably remember the skating rinks ... one for hockey, one for skating ... that were erected every winter at the huge field on Jolicouer (I think) just beyond Jogues.  All my best outdoor skating memories happened there.  In the spring they used to set grass fires to burn off the dead grass.  One summer a bunch of kids started a fire when they were fooling around with a magnifying glass.  As a teenager I used to go watch the softball games held there. Does anyone remember the pastry shop across from Lepine's on Jolicouer where, for a nickel you could go in and buy a bag of "scraps" of day old or damaged pastries?  A special treat was when you found a mashed charlotte russe in your bag. I'm obviously getting old, reminiscing like this!

I got a good chuckle out of that story, Laurie.  Errol was no dummy.  And those pastries, fresh or day old were worth a little larceny.  I have my own little story about those pastries.  I  to think about it but when I was 9 or so I was collecting money for the blind and I got caught with my fingers in the collection can.  But oh, those pastries were such a temptation to a 9 year old whose mom didn't let her have many sweets.  I don't blame Errol one bit. Cheers -- Phyllis

Hi Phyllis   Helping yourself to the donations, eh.  That was cute. I remember when my daughter was about two we  went  to the dollar store.  On return I found all this stuff in her pockets, ball, candies, different little things.  Oh  what to do - so I marched her back there - could hardly keep a straight face and made her tell the cashier what she did and that she won't do it again.  All was OK.  I don't think she has ever helped herself  since that day !!!   Do you have any recollections of my brother  from your days in the same class. He was always "the older brother", so it is hard to visualize him as a kid. Laurie

Hi Maureen,   Just caught a glimpse of the pic you posted.  Shirley Morrice lived on Briand Street, across the road from the Dairy, and she used to pick me up every morning and take me to school, and wait for me every day after school and walk me back home.  I know that my mom used to pay her to do this, so I guess this was her first paying job, hehehe.   I hung with Patti McCormick's sister Linda.  Nice to see a pic of  Mr. Kneeland also.  That man used to scare the bejeezus out of me, but looking at him now he's just a regular guy.   Thanks for the memories.   Cheers.

geniegal9 MSN said...

Hi, Laurie, I sure wish I had some stories to tell you about Errol but all I remember is a tall good looking boy who sat at or near the back of the class and I have a shadowy memory of our teacher (Miss Farwell?   Miss Thompson?) getting on his case about something.  I have a good feeling memory about him which means that I liked him ... unlike at least one other male schoolmate I won't name.   re larcenous kids: I did the same with my six year old son when he did something similar to what your daughter did.  But I'm not so positive it never happened again.  I've been shocked and amused by some of the stories my kids reminisce about when they get together.  They forget I'm sitting there and didn't know about some of the things they did.  Like the time the old wooden bridge at the foot of Fraser St. in Vancouver caught fire.  My son was convinced he started it because he and some friends were down there playing with matches.  In fact, he didn't start it but he felt guilty for years afterward. lol Phyllis

geniegal9 MSN said...

Maureen, thanks for posting the photo.  I loved Mr. Kneeland to bits.  He was always such a kind man and I couldn't wait to be monitor (I was lucky ... I got to do it twice!) so I could run errands, taking messages to different classrooms, for him.  I also  got to ring the fire alarm bell on one occasion and go out the main door instead of the usual girls door.   I recognize some of the faces in the clipping you posted.  You look like a really neat kid.  Happy and cheerful.  Nice to put a face to your name, too. Cheers -- Phyllis BTW, everyone, keep those fabulous photos coming!  I  have a couple more I will post when I get my laptop reconnected to my scanner.  More to come ...

Welcome back Les,   The only way to describe the weather here is nutty-- it changes as we breathe.  When I first came here, my husband's grandmother told me to always bring a "little sweater" along just in case.  And she was right!   My friends in the Grande Prairie area still have mountains of snow there but then they are further north.  They're not happy!   Well, that snow we got on the weekend has disappeared and hot hot hot today. The weather changed while I was at work, so sweltering in my winter coat going home.  It must be because you left!  :-)   I did see the story about the fire and it's unfortunate.  The thing is they were going to renovate or rebuild the school anyway.  Most of the funding is in place.  I guess the fire will hurry things along.  Was it you who told me your daughter was attending the school, or am I thinking of someone else?   And yes, Edmonton is growing in leaps and bounds.  Many good restaurants for sure and a variety --- unlike when I came here in 1993.  I think it's all these easterners coming here and bringing their flavours.  Still looking for a decent bagel and smoked meat sandwich ---maybe one day!   Wherever you drive, there is construction going on.  They want to make east Edmonton more like Whyte Ave.  Yuppish!  Ugh!  Chinese gardens in the river valley and a Ukranian museum to replace the rubbie hotels overlooking the river.  So where do the homeless go?  The average  house now sells for $400,000!  REnts are high and no vacancies.    My husband and I were discussing how Edmonton has grown since he left in 1969.  The population was 300,000 and now it is 1,000,000!  Maggie, price of gas here today is 1.03.  Which is insane since we produce the stuff!  What's it in Saskatchewan?   This is a sure sign of spring:  sitting at my computer on the weekend I could see the top of our cherry tree and sky from the window.  Well, flocks of birds descended on the tree.  There must have been 100 --- a scene from The Birds.  I had never seen such birds and so many --- looked  like blue jays but they were brown with yellow tip on the tail and reddish necklace around the neck.  I got excited and now have to find out what they are called.  Can you tell I'm a city girl from Montreal where the only bird I knew was a wren?  Sigh!    Dolly

Appreciate your thinking of me Les.   See how opinionated writers can be!  I did a quick scan and it's late so I'll have to read it on the weekend when I have more time.    Most writers now have blogs.  It's another tool to sell themselves and their work.  Publishers are now insisting writers have a website and blog.  I'm not there yet.  A poet friend of mine from Grand Prairie is just launching her first book this month and her publisher told her as much to get one!    Hard enough to sell your work but poetry?  Who reads poetry?  My poet friend is one talented lady and her poems are about the oil patch.  She's being promoted as the poet from the north and is published by Croteau in Calgary.  Her name is Dymphny Dronyk.  (She's originally from Amsterdam).  So if anyone is interested in supporting a talented writer, goggle Croteau and the info is there, especially those who live in Calgary and Edmonton, come to her launches.  The first one is in Calgary.  Canadian writers need your support.  Thanks.     Dolly   P.S.  So you flew home?  No new toy and no boredom driving?  Ha!

Gas is up to $1.07 litre here. Light snow all day, temperature hovering at 0. We have some of that dirty old snow lying around still. I wish it would rain or snow harder just to brighten up the city streets. The ski hill closed on April 1st so I haven't been to the river since then. (it's actually a ski valley) I am told it is still frozen right across. We are supposed to get a few days of spring-like weather on the weekend. The long range forecast says it will be unseasonable cold though. It might be a good thing if all this snow does not melt too quickly. The water levels are already looking pretty high. Welcome back Les, now I have an even better reason to hate the Leafs! I can't believe they beat down the Canadiens, just to get knocked out anyway. What a bunch of SPOILERS!

Hey Les,   We haven't heard from Dymph yet and we're all anxious to know how her reading went.  I think she's still in Calgary celebrating!  Go girl!   One of the criteria for being a good writer is to be a good listener especially when you have to do interviews.  Writers are observers of life and people and when they see a wrong, they are usually the ones out there, like June Callwood, to make the world less painful.  Writers are sensitive beings.  They perceive things that others don't---like Dymph's poem and feeling the heat in the soil.  Someone else might just scoop up some dirt/mud but a writer would look at it, feel it, move it around, smell it.     And yes, indeed  you can learn alot when listening to people.  And yes you never give up no matter how many rejection slips you get.  If you believe in yourself and your work, you will get published.    So here I am waiting to hear from a publisher in the states for a short story.  It is a prestigious literary publication and so what am I thinking?  However, every day I wake up and run to the mailbox expecting an acceptance letter.  They said they would answer in three months and we are heading into the fourth month.   SO is that a good sign?  Sigh!   No, like anything else in life, one never gives up.  Once you do, well, you know you're under 6 feet of soil.  Ha!   Now I don't know why you got me on this subject.  The lawn is still brown but we've started to pull up some weeds.  I am ready for apple blossoms and lilacs!   Dolly

I had thought about that location, but dismissed it.  I was thinking about them being outside in all the snow, ice, etc.  (they do revolve, don't they) and wondering if they every get 'stuck'.  But then again, that's probably a silly question, because the heat generated by those suckers probably melts any accumulation, or the winds just blow the snow away!

I don't know if this will help ( or if you have tried anything similar),.but in sales I often met with rejection,.....(part of life,.all walks of life for that matter),.but the odd time when I was usure I had a deal,.only to have it go sideways on me,.....I have phoned the people back ,and asked What I could have done better ,to have helped me get their business,......and you thay can't wait to tell you ,that they were looking more for (whatever),.the odd time they changed their mind and decided to buy from me anyway ( again the Never Give up thing) ................So Good Luck,.........and keep checking the mailbox: Reminds me of the guy,at the Douglas (pick an institution),...but the Guy Hitting Himself over the head constantly,.....and so when Asked Why He was Hitting himself over the head if it Hurt so Much,....He answered Because it always Felt So Good When he Stopped................hahahahahahah .....So oneday Looking in that mailbox,.may Feel Good..............Don't Stop .....hahahahahahah

Oh, Sabby, I do hope you enjoy your poetry workshop.  If you've found poetry inaccessible, I bet you haven't read Sylvia Plath.  As for it being elitist, well, if a working class woman like me can read and enjoy it as well as write some, then elitist isn't the word I'd use to describe it. But then I tend to like the emotional stuff.   Two of the saddest lines in English are from TS Eliot's Lovesong of J. AlfredPrufrock ... "... I have heard the sirens singing each to each.  I do not think that they will sing to me."   Hope you get that acceptance letter.  (I know what it's like to wait.  And wait.  And wait ...)

sabby MSN said...

Les and Geniege,   MMMMMmmmmm.  The poets are out tonight.  Must be late.  Ha!  Thanks for the encouragement.  I always feel I am as good as my last rejection letter.  I tend to forget the acceptance ones but then I think it's human nature.   The thing with the publishing world is that editors are too busy to answer your calls.  You need an agent.  Ha!  Talking with other writers, I have learned that it is a subjective thing, you know, your story doesn't fit the theme of the next issue, too many good entries and yours is good but.....I'm not a prolific writer but I have to say that everything I've submitted has eventually gotten published.   My non-fiction always, but my fiction stories go back to the drawing board, I workshop them, revise revise but eventually they get published.  It's like you say Les, you don't give up.   Geniega.  yes I do like some poetry and I love Sylvia Plath.  I read Bell Jar and her biography, not the one written by her husband though and Letters from Home.  I was into her in the seventies and love Ariel. My favourite from that book is from Sheep in Fog and the first 3 lines go:   The hills step off into whiteness. People or stars Regard me sadly, I disappoint them.    And on that note, I'm going to bed!   Dolly

Hi, Sabby,  (Apologies ... we seem to have three threads going at once here.)  I've been writing for nearly 50 years but am a dilletante at heart.  And a cowardly one at that.  Couldn't take the rejection slips so stopped submitting.  So kudos to you.  It takes great courage to put yourself out there.     In the early 70's my poetry was compared to Richard Brautigan's ... short and full of imagery I guess.  Nowadays I write only when something plagues me to be released.   My favourite Plath is Lady Lazarus.  And mea culpa, I misquoted my very favourite TS Eliot lines. It should read "...I have heard the mermaids singing each to each ..."   Let us know when you hear from that publisher.  I know we all have our fingers crossed for you.

Hi country girl,  They wear uniforms hear in LaSalle and Verdun. But I do not believe it to be cheaper at all. What happens now is the kids wear two sets of cloths every day (double the washing) and have nothing but problems with the schools being too fussy about the uniform. My son has been sent home from school because the waisteband on his top while standing at attention was past his wrist. He has been sent home because his socks were white instead of black. They actually stop the kids and pull up their pants to see the color of their socks. Also send them home because their pants are too long. His sneakers for school cannot be any other color than black any other color on them has to be marked over with a black marker. Also an extra pair of sneakers to hang out in now. This year you had to buy the uniform from one store anything bought at another store is not acceptable, all tops, pants, skirts and blouses  must have a tag with the school letters on them. Also at the kids ages at high school they grow so fast that you have to buy the uniforms twice a year because they grow out of them. Easy $200.00 plus. On one particular day the school sent home over 200 hundred kids for uniform infractions, that is more that 20% of the schools population. Street cloths would work better for me and a lot of other parents here in LaSalle. Danny

Geniega,   So glad to hear from you.  Don't apologize---we're quite flexible here.  Ha!   You know, it doesn't matter if you write to communicate to an audience or if it's a creative impulse.  Never stop if it's your passion.  Not familiar with Richard Brautigan's work but will look him  up.    I don't write poetry because it is too difficult but I will be taking a workshop at the end of the month as  a way to improve my prose.   Rejection is difficult, isn't it?  I've had my share.  But I've been lucky in that everything I've put out there has eventually gotten published even if it got rejected the first time.  I always throw away rejection slips unless the editor/publisher has added  constructive  remarks.  Some of my writer friends disagree with this because they say those rejection slips prove you're a writer for tax purposes and then you can make all kinds of deductions!  Ha!   Yes, I'll let  you know if the story gets published or not.  Thanks for the interest.    You can share your poetry here you know.  I think Les invited members to do so.   Dolly

I enjoyed it because anything she and I do together is great with me so we watched his show over and over and over. Then we watched the reruns over and over and over. Then she taped them and we watched the tapes over and over and over and over.
Well, to make a long story short I no longer hate the kid and now watch the show he is in called Jericho. He was also in
'Saw II' and 'Bon Cop Bad Cop'
The interesting thing is that he has done this all on his own starting with plays in elementary school when he went out and found himself an agent. Ed

My oh my, things sure have changed!  Girls had two tunics and a few white blouses, and very 'sexy' gym uniform which amounted to bloomers!!   I think the schools you are talking about need to lighten up on the uniforms a bit!  Seems a bit obsessive, no?  The kids are there to learn, no matter what they're wearing!  And kids, being kids, will always push the envelope.  I remember we did that all the time in high school -- hiking tunics up (mini skirts were in) with "illegal" sashes instead of the belts that came with the tunics and lots of other infractions.  Sometimes you'd get a warning or detention, but rarely did anyone get sent home!   Some of the catholic schools here are thinking about having girls wear pants instead of skirts because the girls keep wearing them shorter and shorter and I suppose are distracting the guys!  DUH....   Public schools have banned t-shirts with obscenities or offensive pictures or slogans, girls cannot wear "belly tops" or other revealing clothing.  I don't think there are many other restrictions, but then my kids are long out of school so I'm not really in the loop.   Maybe you should move just inside the Ontario border and avoid that $200 price tag!! Oh ya! Winston, that swamp was my Amazon for the spring thaw. Every once in awhile as I ventured forth into the unknown territory of bull rushes and alligators, I'd step into a deeper spot than I anticipated and get my 10 year old feet soaken wet with freezing water over my Billy Boots. Burrr.
The attraction to the wild was chronic and which eventually drove me to see the world -- through a port hole most of the time however. I would truly love to see this fantastic world, just for one day, through the adventurous eyes of a 10 year old. Verdun rocked in the 40s & 50s.

Also got this horse story....in 1984 at a ranch in Kamloops took my daughter and her friend horse back riding....so silly moi thought I could get on a horse too..off we went, the girls galloping along and me and Trixie slowly swaying side to side..all of a sudden Trixie-the-wonderhorse ,although I called her a better name back then, decided to run ....after 1/2 of that, my suntan disappeared off my face, and ended up with weeks of chiropractic adjusting, I am sure my insides also needed adjustments....that old story of getting back on the horse...well it just don't ride with me!!!     hahaha   cookie

Cookie. Speaking about the "Y"....I am willing to bet that you didn't have to swim nake, like all us "boys" did. I think they must have been trying to get us to not be self conscience. Now talking about horses. I remember going up to Mt Royal, and renting horses. I don't remember if Wayne was there or not, I think he might have been,  but Eddie Featherstone was. We rented horses during the winter time, and went for a ride. Mine started to go into the snow, and then decided to roll over in the snow, with me on his back. You never saw anyone scarmble thru the snow on hands and knees so fast. That dirty bugger then ran all the way back to the barn.. Oh what fun.

Seems Verdun is leading the way ,in waste water management as well, Water Supply and Sewage System Verdun has taken the North American lead in the wastewater management and in “urbanistics,” the integrated approach to urban engineering. Deployment of the borough's global intelligent sewage management system, with the Rhéaume basin outfall serving as the cornerstone of this effort, has reduced likelihood of backups, while improving wastewater quality. To learn more about urbanistics and wastewater management, please refer to the following article by Caroline Pelletier: “Gestion des eaux usées et urbistique de l'arrondissement de Verdun, chef de file en Amérique du Nord,” in Municipalit챕, fall 2003.   .................Does Verdun still operate on it's own,.with it's own Budget,.or weren't they swallowed up by the 'Merger' with Montreal,                 ....who provides the services now,.ie: Garbage Removal,.road repair,.snow removal,............???      Did Verdun opt out of the merger,or decide to stay with it?  .....and if they stayed in,.does this mean that Verdun wouldn't have it's own Mayor anymore?                                                                              HF&RV

Thjis is a neat & somewhat rare Verdun photo,.from 'Susie's' Photo Album,.  You all recognize the statue of course ,it's the one ,that most of us would easily recall as being in front of the VerdunCity Hall, the War Memorial, statue,................but that statue was moved to the park Btwn Willibrord & 1st ave ,infront of the VerdunCity Hall ,....................it was origianlly located in the small triangular park that separates Lasalle Blvd & Wellington Street.....................                             .....This is a real neat shot,................................... Thanks Susie,   ...................and Remember how 'bundled up' Our Parents would get us,when we were that little..............................                                    Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Guy,...would you know if there are some old photos like the previous one ,showing the park more clearly,(or fully) .....Wasn't there some cannons in that park at one time ??   It was a small park,........   and I think it's still a park today?       If you do find some Guy,.it would neat to see them if possible,.........  also any old photos from any of the parks in Verdun,.......we all played in many of them,..................That woyld be great to see soemold pics like that ( if you can)......................     HF&RV

Actually a few photos further into 'Susies' album,.she also added a photo of the little park,.and also mentioned that this is where the War Memorial Statue was,.................. This is at Wellington and Lasalle. There used to be a war memorial to the soldiers of Vimy I think. It is now in front of the City Hall?.                                           Susie ,maybe you Remember the old style Cannons that I'm sure were also in this little park,....but they would have been closer to the end of the park near Wellington,.......and not the narrow pointed end near Lasalle & Wellington...................     Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Les   Always thought that bar on Church was Army Navy..Forgot all about that one.. good one.

les__f MSN said...

I had thought that at one time it was also known as an Army/Navy ( and I'm still thinking it was at one time) but checking with a few others from that era,.it seems it was quietly known as '23' .my guess would be that it was a way around drawing any heat???  Not really sure,.but it was a neat place in anycase : Cheers                                              HF&RV
