Question on Operating Systems

Does anybody here have the new Vista Operating System.  If so, do you like it?  Does it take a lot of getting used to?  Any pros and/or cons about it?

Just wondering how long I can go till I need a new Operating System.  Hopefully not until they get any bugs worked out of Vista!

Hi Mom45,......   They have been working on Vista for Five Years,.all the while introducing new additions to XP Pro,.... They've had a lot of difficulty getting to this opening day,..but I would expect it's a decent O/S, it apparently operates with 50 Million Lines of Code,.........that's a lot of stuff that better work well,.........but what wouldn't work, coming from the owners & operators of MSN (you know how well that works)............hahahahahaha If your ready for a new computer then ,.it's obvious ,that you can get into Vista now,...However they made it to be run on the present day,and the capacity's of the P4's & Duo Core's that are out there now,......... The thing to do ,when you purchase 'anything' is First decide ,What will suit Your Needs,....if it does what you want tit to do,...then what you've got 's Ok.......You'll figure it out,....Most people either don't use half of what they already have ,.or don't even know that their own PC/Mac ,..can do much more than they've ever tried to do with it.........   Review what is ,that you want to be able to do,..and then make your decision,....................................   Remember the old KISS principle ,sometimes that is the most prudent (again depending on Need)

If your interested Mom45,............       MSN has some splainin to do                                 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/default.mspx                 Check it out ,should be lots of info,.....then check out 'cons' they won't be available on the same site.........obviously but on many times you can get info & reviews from CNET or Downloads.com http://www.download.com/    search around ,yopu'll find lots'of pertinent information,.......and in the weeks to come you also will see Forums or Blogs, dealing with peoples new experiences with Vista:                 .....Good Luck Mom45,.........never rush anything (but I don't have to tell a girl that ,right)..........hahahahahaha

Thanks for the reply.  Think I'll stick with what I've got, but was just wondering if it would make moving around these sites any easier.  We upgraded to IE #7, and it seems to be doing the job (for now) lol.   Cheers.

Guess I'll stick to investing in Microsoft shares, instead of Vista Operating System.  But I'm always looking for an easier way to do things...you're right.....I should stick to the old wireless model which was a lot less trouble....heck you didn't need a manual to change the colours ~ only came in one colour.   Sort of like the old Model T, you could have any colour you wanted, as long as it was black!!!!

Here is a comment from a friend of mine:   Hi There I have just put Windows Vista Premium into my new lap top. Great program. To see what it can do just go to this web site below and it will play you a clip of the new abilities. It took 5 hours to get all the patches and drivers in but it all work now on my 17” lap top screen. http://zdnet.com.com/1606-2-6148197.html?tag=nl.e550   (The entire URL must be placed in the address line of your browser for this video to play) Personally I won't make that move just yet. This from a person who has both P.C. and Mac. when I sent her the Vista link.S.A...........
Thanks for the link.  I will avoid Vista as long as I possibly can.  It took 4 versions of XP before they made one that recognized all my old W98 software.  I couldn't afford to upgrade it all then and still can't.  Plus, I don't like the newer versions of many programs that I've used for years. In any event, everybody tells me Vista shamelessly steals everything from the Mac, so yet again, Bill ain't come up with anything REALLY new.

Hello Mom1945,   Here's my Vista dilemma today,   At the office we are all on XP Pro With Office 2003 for Word, Excel etc. At home I have been running Win 98 first edition with Office 2000. I am looking to purchase a core 2 Duo system with Vista Ultimate. Locally I have heard conflicting opinions re what version of Office I would need. I checked out the local Sony store in Vancouver they have laptops already with Vista loaded, They are running the trial version of Office 2007. Looks pretty good! But... can I still use Office 2000 as well as Outlook 2000? They told me should be ok but perhaps not? Sooooo... Today I called Microsoft Canada, there is a toll free number. I spoke to four different people who kept referring me to different departments within Microsoft. The consensus was you should either purchase the upgrade or a Retail pkg $659.00 of Office 2007. One person commented It should be ok? Check out this local Vancouver Co. web site for systems. I have purchased several systems over the years as well as a lot of my friends. So far no problems and pretty good service. www.a-power.com   Does anyone have more to add?   Tks George

Hi MontrealGood Times.  I am running with XP Pro,....and Office 2003,....However I am about to switch it to 2007,.......I will be doing this in the next week or so,........I will let you know what my thoughts are,.... Good or Bad...............................I've been spending a bunch of time trying to make a smooth transition in both Storage,as well as O/S,......I have the discs for Office 2007,.......but I am always worried when changing anything,...because I don't want to lose anything,...... I did save all my adress books to all my email addy's ,....but I did forget on a few address's to save the '''''Saved Emails'................if you switch ,...Rememeber to back these up,.....they can be retrieved but it's a pain .........I generally have a lot of stuff saved on external storage ,so I can usually find stuff,..........but it's a bit of work......................Good Luck

I've upgraded MS Office from 2000 to 2005 but still found the program to be terribly unstable. Someone has offered to sell me a Mac but seeing their phony commercials on TV, I'm not impressed by a company that has to run down the other guy instead of being able to brag about itself.            Ed

Gates vs. GM

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

"If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........
Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

I love the next one!!!

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Please share this with your friends who love - but sometimes hate - their computer   "Maybe I'll try a Mac next time I buy a computer".
