Wax Lips, licorice laces, 5 Cent chips

Remember what you could buy for a dime in the 60s. The greatest thrill was finding an empty pop bottle, trading it in, and getting 2 cents to buy candy at Bud's in Crawford Park.
We could buy black balls,  jube jubes and other penny candy at 3 for a cent.
Bottles of pop were ten cents. Popsicles were five cents and in those days they had great flavors not like now.  Remember the  wax lips, belly button candies. licorice laces - the green ones were terrific. Fizzies. Mallo Rolls. Remember those little Weston pies for a dime.
Archie Comic Books were  12 cents. WOW.

I remember the one cent chips, they were crumbs in a little waxed paper bag, not even sealed.  Also we would go to Frankie's after school it was on Bannantyne near Argyle and we could get a fountain coke and 1/2 a May West for 15 cents, as long as we had someone to share the other half with.  I also remember taking my allowance of 25 cents and walked down to Woolworths on Church & Wellington, was able to get a coke and hot dog.  Then walk all the way back took most of the day. but then what else was there ay.   Nice pictures of Wellington Les F. Biscuiterie GiGi was another good place to get broken pieces of chocolate at a reduced price. I remember the sponge toffee and chocolate covered sponge bars.
The store was situated on Church Avenue. Also --- the straws with the sour powder in them were called PIXIE STIX if I remember correctly.

 Hi Laurie    Do remember
Stillwells Humbugs ? I went to vhs with Connie. They have the best Humbugs
ever!
We got them at xmass and gave them to other people
as gifts.

For some reason I think they are in LaSalle
now.

Hi Levisjeans I went to school with Connie Light  also.   I agree the humbugs were awsome. Out of curiosity, I looked up their location on Canada  411. They are listed under  Stilwells Maison de la Humbug. (7658 Centrale  Lasalle).   Maison de la Humbug.( I had a good laugh at that store name.  These are the times I don't miss Quebec) Laurie

Les,   That photo of Wellington Street brings back memories....I stole a tube of lipstick from Woolworth's and didn't get caught!   Must be my Catholic upbringing and having nuns as teachers that I still feel guilty over this deed and have a need to confess here!  :-)   Dolly

Ok for your 'pennance'  You have to write something that will help other people...................Oh Yea you did that .......Ok your forgiven,........See how much better you can feel,,,,,,,just have to know the 'loopholes'........hahahahaha         I hope I'm not holder of those LightningBolts Again...............hahahahahaha   Reminds me of the Cleptomaniac ,who after years of stealing finally goes to a shrink,to get help in letting go of the guilt he feels: So he goes week after week for years, and pays big bucks ,until finally his shrink tells him ,He's completely cured, and will never steal anything ever again: He asks the shrink ,if he is certain that he's been cured ,..and he is told that Absolutly he is 100% cured,.........and for a Test to prove to himself that he is cured: the Shrink tells him to go to a local Mall & walk through Future Shop, and he'll see that he no longer has the urge to Steal anything: .......but Says the Shrink:  "if you have a Relapse,.....get me an i-pod" .............hahahahaha            ps: Did you at least use the lipstick.............hahahahah  (I'll light a candle for you............if they let me in the church) Ok Pass those 'bolts' back

Les_F That store on Wellington & 4-5th ave....would that have been Kresge's(sp?)?  And speaking of sponge toffy; when we went to St Willibrord's, remember when we would run across the street to the Candy Store on Verdun Avenue and buy all kinds of goodies(including sponge toffy) for only a nickel!!! I have a great EASY recipe to make your own: 1 cup white sugar 1 cup golden corn syrup 4 tsp baking soda Heat sugar and syrup over medium heat stirring constantly until candy thermometer reads 305ºF.  Add baking soda all together REALLY QUICK and stir like crazy. It will expand really fast.  Pour it into a large greased pan, wait for it to harden, break it off and enjoy.  Enjoy! judy in NB

Hi newfydog9,....  it could have been Kresge's but I really don't know, I thought it was justa 5-10-15 on the sign,..I do Remember going in the store, with it;s wooden bins of stuff,.......but don't really Remember the actual name,...I'm sure someone here can help us out........I seem to Rememeber it was one of those stores that ,you'd get to only so often, only to realise they never had quite the selection of junk we were looking for........hahahaha 'I guess Woolworths or Marshalls had a bigger budget:

Last year when I was in Montreal I was staying with friends in Lasalle and went to Stilwell's.  They are still the only store I know that can close for the summer and still have their customers when they return!  Yes, they are on Centrale in Lasalle.  I brought back 8 lbs of humbugs (special orders from friends and family.)   BTW they will ship them to anywhere if you send them a money order for the candy and the cost of shipping.

Les. We still have the junk stores around.  They are not as good or quite the same. Compared to Woolworth or Kresges (now Kmart) they are very very small. Down here they call them Dollar stores. Where everything is a dollar. Some of the stores are not real " DOLLAR STORES". They call themselves that, only because everything is priced a dollar amount, such as $1.00, $2.00, $3.00, etc. And they are not really as fun either as Marshall's, etc!!!!!!

Lynn:   No I have not spoke to Wesley Deley.  It is actually my brother Norman who ran into him downtown several years ago and spoke to him.  My son is also a Police Officer in Calgary, I should ask him if he could see if Wesley is still on the force.   Connie
