The Mustache

Good Day The Lad

I too used to go to the Mustache every Tuesday
Night. They had some kinda special on Beer I never drank it though cause I
thought they saved all the old beer out of the emptys, and sold it to
you in a pitcher on Tues. Anyway we had alot of fun there alot of Verdun people
would go there. It was just one Bus ride up Atwater hill.

I still talk about the place. Thanks for bringing
it up.

Hi there,
last time I saw the Mustache it was disguised as a parking lot back in 1999.I got my butt hauled out of there when I was 16 with a friend for underage drinking. We spent the nite in jail then had do go to court later on and pay a $15 fine. That place was a blast.I remember the old lady in the bathroom named Pearl. She always made clicking noises with her mouth

I remember my parents sending me newspaper clippings regarding that fire.....I had married in 1970 and by 1972 was living here in Nova Scotia. That was a terrible tragedy.   Dianne

When the topic of bars came up I thought of The
Blue Bird,
I am sure most of us remember this tragic fire what
I did not know was how it was dealt with.

There are no words to express just how I feel right
now. Thanks so much for the information.

I do remember The Hunters Horn and the cock &
bull. I just read the article about the Blue Bird. It left me with a very somber
feeling.
I am sure we all new the Blue Bird Cafe, and some
of us lost friends on the very tragic night.

Hi Sandy...We took Rory to the Vet's this afternoon and he removed the stitches and she is healing just fine. She was very happy when Tawny left on Monday. She is returning back to her old self again.   Yes it is very cold here and we are expecting a storm tomorrow.......yuck...I hate winter....we have been lucky here and winter has only settled in, so I guess I shouldn't complain!   What I wouldn't give to have a 'cold one' at the Cock & Bull!!!!   Does anyone remember the lady who playd the piano there in the late 60's?   Dianne

...the scan... oh my gosh, that's an old one resurfacing - of course, then
there was also the Blue Angel on Drummon, I believe.

Dianne. I remember The Wagon Wheel. Enjoyed that p[lace immensely. My ex wife was suppose to go to that place the night of the fire. She said she was going out with a "bunch of the girls" YA RIGHT. Well thank heaven she was out SCREWING around on me, and was no where near that place. If she had been there she would have died a firey flaming death. But I am glad that bitch...oops...do you feel a little bitterness coming thru????? was not there that night.....because if she was I would have been devistated, you bet!!!!!!! Oh well. It is not what has passed before, but where I am now....AND if there is such a thing as heaven on earth, then I am there, or pretty close to it.... If we hate, then we are the ones that are in agony, and the person you hate, couldn't care less. Also, that night, Mickey Walsh was there with body bags, helping out. He was devastated by that night. Winston you are so right about not hating and becoming bitter. You sound  like a very happy person with a great sense of humour.   Dianne

I used to work in the Sun Life Building and after work, we girls would cross Dominion Square and head for the Hunter's Horn.  I never stayed long --- a drink and I was out of there.  I was going out with my husband to be at that time but my single friends were known to close the joint!  :-)   Harvestmoon, tell me more about the Esquire showbar.  I always wanted to go there but never made it.  I heard they had the best music.  Why did you like it?  Could members tell me what was their favorite club and why.  Can you describe to me the atmosphere, the customers?  For example, I know the Horne had an Irish atmosphere and the cock n Bull was an English Pub.  This is for some research I'm doing.    I recall that night when the Blue Bird burned.  Horrific and reading about it again brought back those memories like it happened yesterday.    Dolly

Dianne. Thanks. You have nailed it. I am a happy, contented person. I am blessed more than I deserve, but will continue to accept being blessed. AND, I do have a great sense of humor. I will do almost anything to make someone laugh...As they say Laughter is the best medicine. Thanks again Dianne.  Winston

Hello Sabby,   When I worked for the Murray's restaurant chain my main location was on Sherbrooke street. I did from time to time get asked to fill in at their location in the Sun Life Bldg. What a view! Do you have any pics?   George

Another pretty good bar/club was JR's bar on sherbrooke St. in N.D.G. It was
one of the only two western clubs that survived the 70's 80's and the 90's.
I worked there in the very late 70's and early 80's as one of the
bouncers/doormen. One of the highlites of my time spent in Mtl. You were
guarenteed at least 3/4 of the club was from Verdun every single weekend. I
had to work there most of my freinds hung out there from Verdun. (Might
still be there)Have not been back to Mtl in 11 years.

Ah yes, Sentimentality. A friend went in for cancer surgery the other day. Everyone was offering their sympathies. I asked him, if he didn't make it, could I have his cell phone. He laughed. Said that was exactly what he needed. Men can be sentimental but damned if we're going to show it. I spoke to him today. He's recovering nicely. I probably won't get the cell phone.        Ed

Amen to that!!!  I loved the Esquire Show Bar...back in the mid 50's. Remember Bo Diddley?  Frank Motley?   Anybody remember the Toit Bleu over in Laprairie? We used to hitch hike over there all the time - great little dance hall. We would 'jitterbug' our little butts off all night long - ah! - such fond memories.   judy in NB

Ed - What years did you go to the Au Toit Bleu? You may have been one of the cars that used to pick up Heather and me along Lakeshore(?) Road....wouldn't that be a hoot! I think we were 'hanging out' over there around 1955-ish. We were silly, naive teenagers who never gave a thought as to the dangers of hitch hiking.  Thank God, times were much different way back then.  I would never do that today! judy in NB

Mum, Of course I meant young ladies. At least they were until we got there. I was a lousy dancer but all I had to do was stand there and the nrxt thing I knew I was all over the floor. The skinniest young girl on the dance floor has the strength of King Kong. I used to travel by Mercier bridge along 9c and cut of near what is today Delson. Ed
