Snow Banks

Just drove into Montreal today a day after the first big snowstorm, what a mess.  I had forgotten what it was like to try and park in the snow banks.  Cars all parked which way  people trying to shovel out before towed away.  Anyone out there remember the big snow storm of 1971.  It is so vivid in my memories of getting around in Verdun.  It is right up there with the 1998 Ice Storm.

Glo. I do remember the big snowfall of '71. I was working on The Montreal Stock Exchange at the time. I had a small dog at home, and because we heated with an oil stove. I had to get home from Place Victoria, to Beurling in Verdun. I was in shape in those days. Anyways took the Metro from Place Victoria to Atwater Station. Then jogged home from there. I left my car parked inside the garage at Place Victoria for 7 days. Anyways, I lived across the street from the back of the school and the big field there. The snow blew so bad, I had to go around back, climb up to the second floor, and break a window to get in. I still remember what day it was on. Thursday!!!!!  Winston Allison

I Remember that storm well ,indeed,.....and made a point of getting out of the house early enough to Drive to the Point, to the Fiesta,.....to get stranded there,.......No Sense being stranded at home,.... but the city was slowed right up ,with cars,& bus's ,stranded everywhere.... the city got real quiet............I think we had 3days of semi-partying

The big storm of '71 started oin March 1. Snowed for 2 days and ended March 3. I was stuck in my tractor on the highway near Montmangy for 2 days. The wind coming off the river was blowing parralel to the ground. Im mid afternoon  I left the cab to walk and the wind tossed me like a rag doll. I crawled back on my hands and knees and stayed for 2 days till the wind stopped. Two others men, whose cars had run out of gas came seeking warmth.. At 1000 rpm I had enough fuel to idle for 8 days but the ice kept threatening to block the air intake. We sat with nothing to eat or drink, thinking abou the two 40's  that one lad had left in his car, which by know we new he'd never find.            Ed

Incidentally, this same storm paralyzed the whole eastern seaboard from Canada to Mass. One man died in his car on Cote de Liesse. Businesses closed early because it was coming. When his stuck car ran out of gas there was nowhere to go in and get warmth. He froze. I think I would have taken a jack bar and broke a window somewhere rather than freeze to death and dealm with the police later.   Ed

I Remember that storm too,.also there was another large storm in 69ish too,. I think my brother has some old 8mm film of that storm (the 71 ),He lived on 6th av,......the storm did paralyze the city,.....Except for the Bank Robbers,.as I seem to Remember that at least 3 banks were hit by noon that day,.I believe snowmobiles were involved in one of them..........montreal used to be the Bank Robbery Capital of North America,.........that title a few years later was passed to Vancouver,.(coincidentally a lot of Montrealer's had moved there) hahahahaha  I will see if my brother still has that film,..and if we can get some pics off of it,.....
