POM Fruit Cake

Does anyone know of a source for Pom light fruit cake in the tins.  My sister is coming to Calgary for Christmas and just maybe if I point her in the right direction she might find one of these cakes before she visits us.  She lives in Brossard and does not often come into Montreal but she could co-ordinate a trip in to picking up a cake if you know what I mean.

Fresh Bakery is a leading producer and distributor of packaged fresh bread and bakery products with brands such as Dempster's, POM, Ben's, McGavin's and Healthy Way. You might find your old favourite under any of those brand names right there in Alberta.  http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_files/irol/88/88490/reports/031506CBFreshFactSheet.pdf

I sent an email to MapleLeaf asking them if it was possible to buy a Pom Fruit cake in Calgary.  Gee I knew that McGavins and Dempsters were the same company but I surely didnt know that they also owned Maison Cousin.

I was at Walmart today (first post Christmas visit) and what do you think I found in the Christmas Clearance area?! POM fruit cake! Maybe I'll take pictures before I open it. It's in a lovely red tin with holly decorating the edges of "Winter Wonderland". I'm not sure if it is light or dark, the label just says fruit cake.......suspense.................

An acquaintence of mine told me the story of a Christmas long ago and a POM Cherry Pound Cake. Danielle's mom was the hostess of their large extended family's Christmas day feast and had spent all of the month of December getting ready for the 'grande spectacle". It was always a very big deal.  She had purchased both a Pom fruit cake and their cherry pound for dessert - a tradition of Christmas with the family. These would be the highlight of the dinner. Mom put both cakes under a bed in the children's room to keep them fresh (remember how cool bedrooms were back then??) After turkey and all the trimmings, Mom took the tins out from under the bed and opened them up for serving. Only a heap of broken cake was left in the cherry pound tin. Danielle's little brother had spent the month snacking only on cherries (his favourite part) out of the cake. I don't think he was capable of sitting down for the next week. I'll just bet that little brother remembers Pom cakes extremely well.   A very happy new year to all!   Dale Barwick
